Initially, i felt the same; thought the berry colors were way too gaudy.

But now for some reason, looking at it, the space gray looks very 'consumer electronic' (very Sony even). The blueberry+strawberry looks more 'Nintendo' (quirky)... "fun". hmmmm

I agree with this. Though I pre-ordered two of these and did one of each. Might keep both (one for my kids play room). If I only keep one it will probably be the colored model.

If I do only keep one, I have a friend highly interested. If he doesn't take it I'll toss it on the marketplace here for cost+shipping. Not looking to be one of those people that keeps others from getting it for the market price. As I'm still sitting here without an NES Classic and it annoys me. Ha.

My initial shipping date for both (ordered from two different places) was "delivered by March 3rd". That has been bumped to "delivered by March 4th" for both of them in the past week. Hopefully no more delays as I was planning on taking the 3rd off and having a 3-day weekend with Zelda :)

I think it would be cool if Nintendo releases a 'blank cartridge' with xx storage, so that users can store their VC content on it rather than the switch/SD. :)

So which one are you guys planning on getting? The space gray or blueberry+strawberry model? :D

Originally I wanted the grey model but now I want the colour one! If my preorder goes back on it'll be for that one. I've got enough black consoles and devices in my living room.

Well my switch, pro controller and Zelda is paid off. Traded in some old stuff and with bonus credits of 25% with my elite Gamestop card, I ended with €500 credit which is paid off everything ... made getting the console justifiable.

It sure would be nice to be able to buy an additional system without the base

I thought Nintendo were going to sell them separately after I saw a Polygon article bitching about the price of Switch accessories (including the base). Can't see any mention of it on the UK store though which is a shame. I'd like to have a base downstairs as well for Mario Kart/multiplayer games but keep the core of the machine in another room.

Yeah, bases were supposed to be available for $90

They may just not launch with the machine, but arrive soon after ? (Just semising)

Remember when the SNES came out, and every console came with a bundled copy of Mario World? THAT is how you sell a new system! ;)

Now-a-days, the best we can hope for, despite all the competition, is to be able find the console in stock on store shelves.

Has gaming become so much more popular today, or are the manufacturers incapable/unwilling to supply enough? or both?

Nintendo have made limited supply an art form as people automatically perceive that limited supply as indicative of success.

Likewise it helps demand, as psychologically we are all programmed to want / desire what we can not have.

2 million units worldwide for the Switch Launch will invariably be sold out and Nintendo will declare that sell out as massive success, and they will keep feeding that perception by drip feeding supply of the console over the year.

This likely suits retailers too as it means they are not left with surplus stock lying around and filling precious storeroom and shop floor estate especially when there is little content software wise to support keeping lots of stock of hardware.

Had a good think about this today. I recently cancelled my Switch preorder and bought a PSVR instead. I tried to work out why I didn't want the Switch which would have cost much less than a PSVR... a device I bought more or less on a whim.
The answer is simple. You are not the target market for the Switch. You are trying to justify why you need a switch. You don't want a Switch, but you feel like you need it. Your cancellation of the Switch proves this. However you want the PSVR but don't really need it. The PSVR excites you so you bought that.

The Switch will excite some people. The PSVR will excite other people. Your choice here is not right or wrong. It's just you choosing the experience that you want more. That's all.

That's not how marketing works. You do not break good news for consumers that may have a wide appeal 2 weeks before launch.

You don't release information that may aid selling your hardware to a wider audience at the last minute. 2 weeks is last minute. The likes of Amazon and GameStop etc.. are all pretty much having their stock allocation for launch finalised./QUOTE]
Apple have made a multibillion dollar empire on doing exactly this. Sure we know it already due to the leaks and rumours. This doesn't change the fact that often Apple unveil critical info about product releases shortly before the launch date. Sometimes they ammounce something and say it's up for sale today.

Apple does this successfully. So why not Nintendo? Having the VC hype explode just before the console launches is a good idea. It means that VC hype will not have had time to die down before the console launch day.

You paid extra for that.

Would you have paid $350US or whatever hideous price that becomes outside the US for a game bundled with the Switch?

After the WiiU, would you make many more consoles at the risk they will not sell? Nintendo did not know how popular the Switch would be. Best to be on the conservative side and make more if and when needed.

^ 1. Apple and others do not do this. Whilst they may have a launch event to officially unveil the product much closer to that actual launch date of the device, they DO NOT have subsequent events after that unveil, just before product launch day to say they have these extra features they did not announce on their launch/unveiling. Leaks are not the same thing as an official launch event.

2. You seem to miss the point of bundles completely. A game like 12 Switch should have been 'free' courtesy demo with the system. Not a $50 standalone game. Nintendo are making profit on every single system they sell, at $300 / €330 throwing in what is essentially a glorified tech demo is not too much to ask for any consumer.

3. Nintendo's mastery of artificially constrained supply dates back long before the Wii U. Blaming the Wii U is just obfuscation.

1. The difference is Apple don't ever tell us this information about their products. ifixit and others do.
My point about leaks was that most of the Apple event info we already know. Apple also do tell us more about products closer to their launch. The often do this with OS launches. They tell us about some features and tell us about others later. Also most of the really deep programmer level features of the OS, are often left to be told at WWDC in the state of the union or other keynotes there.

2. A bundled game is never free. You are paying for it within the price on the console. 12 Switch should have been a bundled game. But that would make the bundle cost more as Nintendo would not give the game away for free. As much as I want 12 Switch bundled in, I'd happy as well for it not bondled in and a $50 cheaper console set.

3. That correct, to a point. I was just using a recent example to prove why Nintendo might be seen as doing it this time round again.

Also you are assuming Nintendo can correctly and accurately predict the exact demand of every console. Nintendo is not that good. They do lowball their production numbers at times but you don't know the specifics. Neither to I. What other factors are at play with the perceived low launch numbers of consoles? It's never just making sure demand outstrips supply. Nintendo is a company that is out to make money like any other. They want more consoles in people's hands. Certan factors just make the consoles sell out at launch.

Nintendo could not have predicted the demand for the Wii and MiniNES. That's not Nintendo creating an artificial supply shortage. That is just someing being more popular than anticipated. Withuot the full facts like supply chain numbers, number of consoles able to be made in the factories, success of previous consoles etc etc we will not have the full picture to answer this.

The reality is we will both likely be the first on here getting our Switches on launch day ...

Mines already paid for and my 128gb micro SD is sat on my desk awaiting its new home. I even bought Bomberman R, just to have something other than Zelda, and I'll likely re-purchase I Am Setsuna on launch day.

MK8 Deluxe is also pre-ordered ... So as much as I criticise Nintendo, I still somehow can't resist giving them my money ...

I do have a Switch hardware queston. One I have not seen answer too. Maybe one of the nice people here will know the answer.

What glass is used in the Switch touch screen? Is it Gorilla Glass or another brand?
I have been wondering this. I know the ifixit teardown will be 2-3 weeks away but this I have been interested in. Mainly so we all know how durable the screen will be.

It doesn't seem to be Gorilla Glass as corning list all it's partners that feature GG on its site and Nintendo are not there.
https://www.corning.com/gorillaglass/worldwide/en/full-products-list.html

So I can only assume it's another brand. I have the official nintendo/hori screen protector ordered with mine, but will likely get a tempered glass one when they are available.

Thank you for that information.

Does the iPhone use Gorilla Glass? I thought Apple did. (Could be wrong though). If Apple do then they are not on the full products list.

Also on that link you shared it says:
"Select device manufacturers have not been willing to provide Gorilla Glass model verification."
Does that mean not every model of product is on that list?

I think you know what I am getting at, if the iPhone is not on the list but uses gorilla glass, then the same could be for the Switch. But I could be totally wrong in my thinking here and if so I accept that.

This is true, there's an email link in there too if a manufacturer / device isn't listed, so I sent an email to ask ..

Let's see how they respond :)

Then you either don't really mean the criticism or you ought not to criticise. It is utterly baffling to me that someone would devote as much energy as you have in this thread and then part with 500 quid, whether credit or no. That's why Nintendo never changes for the better.
