I don't think Nintendo cared about it being handled by kids. This was more likely simply down to fabrication costs.

It begs the question though, why did they even design the dock like they did ? Essentially that entire front panel is superfluous to its design as it's essentially just the USB C dock part at the bottom.

They could have created a far more elegant design that simply had USB C at the bottom and a raised back to support. Slightly angled/tilted so the raised back fully supports.

6DHNK_SQ1_0000000004_BLACK_SLf1

Something like this belkin dock. Then they could have avoided all contact with the screen and even used the screen in docked mode to display time, battery, controller indicators or game specific screensavers. So much cool possibility opens up, and we wouldn't be left with dread every-time we dock.

It would have also made the dock more portable too for carrying whilst away from home etc.

The dock by comparison to the handheld unit is incredibly poorly designed and ugly for the rather simple/meagre job it has to do ..... It's just a bad design.
Yeah, a dock like that would've been better. It could be even open things up like have different versions of the switch (more rugged or bigger battery) and still fit in the same dock. Also would make it easier to use a case. I do find it strange they at least didn't take advantage of the rails on the side of the console to guide you in docking it, this could've also helped with the scratches.

I watched this video. For surviving 11 drops on concrete, at five feet, was really impressive, without any real major damage. The slow motion camera replays showed the point of impact and it didn't even crack the screen, aside from abrasions. Obviously this was a bit extreme, but it shows the Switch can take some abuse.
Yeah, I really think that's the main reason Nintendo went with a plastic screen. I mean they went as far as coating the games in a chemical so kids won't swallow them, so they know it'll be bang around a bit and scratches are better than a cracked screen.

Just arrived!

Setting it up now but still no games, pro controllers or anything else in stock at my local Walmart and Best Buy's.

I guess digital it is!
I realize how easy it is now to spend $60 on a console game, but resist the temptation! Anytime I buy an accessory, I always think of the cost as a percentage of the whole thing, and 25% for a 128GB card is too much for me to stomach, plus you lose the ability to resell a game. Also, no discount on digital games, so it's a triple whammy.

Really not getting into Bomberman R. I think it's the isometric view making its controls really wonky as it causes a crapton of accidental deaths as you try to dash out the way but the controls let you down in that isometric viewpoint (down is not down, it's diagonal etc..)

I am going to take it back to GameStop and swap it for something else (the benefits of being Epic at GS is you get two weeks satisfaction returns) and will likely just pick up Skylanders Imaginators ...
Good that you pointed it out. I would've picked it up but it was sold out. I've always disliked the 3/4 view for precisely that reason, largely diagonal controls. That is a great benefit on a game. Here you open it you own it forever.

I was gobsmacked that it was a made a launch title, and worse still given a physical release instead of something like Fast RMX. Have you seen the sales numbers for the Bomberman series? They're hilarious.
Bomber was all sold out when I picked up the console on launch morning. I guess they realize it's the only window they have to charge $50 for that game, to prey on new owners hungry for any games to justify the new console. I'm going to buy Fast RMX soon. Looks great and I think deserved to be a physical release.

do you guys think pro controller is worth getting when/if I do get a Switch?

Getting that switch itch
If you'll be playing docked, I'd say yes. It is very comfortable, and has probably the best D-pad on any joypad ever, very crisp and tactile feeling. The PS4 D pad feels mushy in comparison. Definitely worth the $50 for the controller. The other $20 I think of it as a convenience fee in not having to peel off the joycon lol, as well as "saving" $30 to buy the joycon charging grip, plus you get the missing D-pad.

Where is everyone putting their dock?

Mine is inside a wall unit with a door but I keep it open when gaming.
I'm concerned about heat and also inconvenient of where it's at being so low and before I get my screen protector.
I had mine behind the TV at first, which made it tricky to get lined up that probably caused the scratches. I moved it to the front since. It's low profile enough not to look distracting. I made a spot for it next to my XB1S, but it also makes docking tricky as there's not much clearance on top.

Likewise (though I only bought two for my CDi) and for shame actually got some twisted enjoyment out of the Philips CDi as for it's time the animations and sound whilst laudable now, was really ahead of the game back then ...

Played pretty much all of the Zelda's that were available to me and there are only 2 which I have never finished being Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. Both ran out of steam for me within half a dozen hours ... And I HATE with passion the grafted on wiggle controls for attack and such.

I re-bought TP on GameCube after hating the Wii controls however replaying the first 6 hours or so felt like a chore rather than enjoyment, and even with TP HD remaster I had same block. That game just leaves me cold and by God I've given it enough chances at this stage ........

I would like to see Skyward Sword without motion control and some of its early 'filler' content revised so it's more paced rather than plodding ....
MY GOD YES!!! I'm glad i'm not the only one who is not a big fan of the wii-remotes! (Don't get me wrong, I actually loved both of those games including Skyward Sword, but the motion controls was the one thing on Skyward Sword that really bothered me ALOT!! Fortunately the HD version of Twilight Princess that they did for the WiiU was done in a way that you could play the whole thing on the GamePad instead of motion stick controllers, so was really happy with that! (and I strongly feel that's what they need to do with Skyward Sword, as that was actually even more annoying to play with a Wii remote than Twilight Princess was!)

But at least we know that it's physically possible to convert a Wii-Remote designed game successfully so that it's fully playable on a GamePad. I would absolutely love it if that's what Skyward Sword turned out to become, as the GamePad experience is a million times more enjoyable for me every time. (I feel that way about most games to be honest).

I don't want to knock Skyward Sword in its entirety entirety though, as I felt it had a good story, and there were alot of funny bits in it, some fun weapon upagrades, plus alot of great dungeons and bosses to fight, etc! (so it gets better the more you play it). So for me personally, it was only really the wii remote problem that bothered me most (and perhaps also the overuse of the stamina gauge feature) that let Skyward Sword down for me way more than it should. I'm not crazy about the restrictive nature of having stamina being a feature in a Zelda game, so was initially a bit worried about this when I heard you would have a stamina gauge in Breath of the Wild. But fortunately it isn't anywhere near as annoying on Breath of the Wild as it was on Skyward Sword. So they could probably learn from how they did this better and improve that element of Skyward Sword also if they brought out a HD Version of it out on the Switch. (Not as much of a dealbreaker as the Wii remote problem though). But if they made it GamePad playable, I would hands down totally buy it for the Switch if they did, because it was a good game other than that, and really enjoyed it for the most part except for that rather annoying niggle!)

Just a general FYI ...

I was shopping a for things for the little G's upcoming birthday the last couple of days, and during my research on the N/Switch, I've come across retail and _under_ retail through typical channels - these come and go quickly, but if you keep an eye out, you do NOT have to pay over retail. :)

Clean set up!

Yea i didn't pull the trigger and instead played the Snipperclips demo over and over again until I went to bed. Hoping to hit Best Buy today and snag a copy.

I am thinking of moving it from my pictured spot to somewhere up by the TV if the boss lets me considering I am invading her rustic farm style with all my "gadgets"

TP was able to be brought to the Wii U because they ported the GameCube version, which meant no additional development required for controls beyond remapping them and changing some button graphics. I have very serious doubts that they would go to the trouble to update Skyward Sword to play in the traditional manner.

I'm curious if you guys have any issues with your Switches so far.... scratch screen, left-joy-con issue (kinda reminds me of left shark, and they're both blue!), dead pixels, etc?

Cheers

Nothing on mine, but I haven't used Joy-cons off the device, if I'm using the device docked I simply use the pro-controller.

No scratches but a screen protector went on it as soon as it came out of the box.

None so far for me.

No scratches (no screen protector). I've mainly been playing it on the television but have taken it off the dock 5-6 times.

Joy-cons have not disconnected on me, yet. (no issues with pro-controller either)

No dead pixels.

That's good your Switch is without issues. But Just because you're not experiencing these reported issues, doesn't devalue what others have experienced or mean the issues don't exist. It's not a secret the dock is cheaply made and could have been designed better to avoid some of The scratching issues (MRU gave a good example in Post #1210), which now, some are resorting to purchasing screen protectors because of the dock, which they necessarily shouldn't have too. If you look at the break down video of the dock, it's cheaply made.

Even when docking the Switch, one shouldn't have to think "I hope my Switch doesn't scratch." That shouldn't even cross the gamers mind if these issues weren't noted to begin with.

Post #1225 shows a video where the most minor issues could have been avoided, but were poorly designed by Nintendo.

I think the Switch is great and will do well. But for future versions, these issues could be easily addressed to make it a better experience.

You don't know what's posts I was loling at.

Whilst I feel for people who's Switches are being scratched by their docks, I do think that some care could be given when they're sliding the screen in. This shouldn't be happening when just mounting it normally.

Nor should screen protectors be melting. I mean, that's hardly Nintendo's fault. It isn't a poor design by them is it.

Of course there are problems with some elements of the hardware. Like the joy cons. I don't have the issue, but it may develop so I'm eager to see what Nintendo do about it.

But forgive me for having a chuckle about melting screen protectors and what not.

It wasn't the point of what posts you found humorous. It was just a general point that these issues do exist that are out of the gamers control in some respects, which no one should find funny. Again, some of these issues could have been avoided if Nintendo would have placed more quality into the design fold. When an overall design suffers quality control issues, then the consumer is the one paying for it and they shouldn't have to experience some of the issues occurring.

In any case, I have not heard of anyone having melted screen protectors. But I do feel the scratched screens and Joy cons are problematic from recent reports.

But I agree, if more problems persist, then Nintendo hopefully stands behind their product, as they rightfully should.

No issues here either, no scratches and no joy con misbehaving (don't have a pro controller, joycon is our only controller). *knock on wood*

What is your friend code!

Mines 3796 4347 6005 :)

Edit: also, and I might have said this already, but Zelda and the Switch have provided/are providing the single best game experience I've ever had. I haven't been this excited for gaming since Ocarina of Time was released as my friends and myself were jumping between that and Goldeneye. Now I get it from Zelda, Snipperclips, and Metal Slug 3.

I'm playing on the big TV, then in the kitchen if it's my partners turn to cook, then in a library, at a train station - the same huge console experience in malleable form. What a sublime setup this is.

Edit 2: And Zelda. I have few words left to describe this. I get tired of the weapon durability thing but that's it. What an adventure.

No screen scratches, and no issues with the left joy-con. Not sure if this is really an issue, when I hit the home button on the R joy-con to start the Switch and the TV, nothing happens to start the L joy-con automagically. So, in addition to hitting the home button and I also hit the L & R buttons to start everything up, otherwise I get an annoying screen that tells me to hit a button on the L joy-con.

I agree, I haven't been this into a game/rpg since Skyrim (or Vampire:Masquerade, I picked that up really late). (I'm also a backer of Star Citizen, and was totally into that for the months of Sept & Oct, but ran out of things to do--it is only alpha right now).

BotW has an incredible combo of gameplay (in a world where it feels like you can do almost anything) and interesting/compelling story.

I was driving up the highway yesterday, saw some hills close by, and had an instant Zelda reaction of "I wonder if I have enough stamina to climb that..."

I just tried enabling the motion processing on my TV to mimic 60fps on Zelda BOTW. Looks pretty good. It's sharper and smoother in person, guessing Youtube processed it and lost some quality. Make sure you set it to 1080p60 on your browser. Leaving it on auto it will not play at 60fps.

Tell me what you guys think? Sorry I didn't notice the heavy crop on my camera until I uploaded the video.

They really should've modeled the cartridge cover after the NES cover. And then they should've colored the cartridges grey instead of black (except Zelda should be gold).

Wonder how long until they start selling classic colored joycons?

Yeah, all those issues have reassured me that I can wait with a Switch until Super Mario is released. Hopefully they'll have fixed them by then.

How is the emotional side of the game? OoT had a *lot* of it, and that's part of why it is my favorite all time game. Also, is there loads of memorable tunes in it, similar to OoT? No spoilers thanks. :)

Well, unboxed and set up my Switch last night.

Set it up and flawlessly and really enjoying the minimal style to the UI and snappiness.

Dive into the BOTW and absolutely beautiful game and opening sequences. About 10-15 minutes in my left joy con is doing what I think a lot of complaints have been about.

I would lose connection and unable to move Link and the stick was unresponsive. :( Very disappointing and unsure if there is a fix out there yet or if this is hardware related or can be remedied with a software update.

I would return to BB but I know they wont have any in stock for weeks so I may start with Nintendo directly.

Nintendo really needs to address the joy-con issue from a manufacturing perspective immediately. It directly hinders the use of the product. This issue has the potential to hamper sales(not sure how much that matters cause its selling out everywhere).

Sales and hype are only building, and the longer they wait the more it will hurt IMHO. They should fix the issue on all new units shipping out, and announce a left-joy-con only exchange program for existing owners (And maybe as a good will gesture give them some Nintendo points for the eShop).

@Cnasty Personally, I would return the product.

The fix seems to be relatively simple:
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017...gn-causing-switchs-joy-con-connection-issues/

EDIT: I am NOT suggesting that any end user in any way shape or form attempt to fix the issue using the information in that article. It merely points out that the "fix" seems pretty simple for Nintendo to implement during production.

I've got the screen protector and Zelda on the way... but i will wait to hear from Nintendo about this issue before buying a console. I don't want to get stuck with a lemon.

Ok, that *sucks*. How far away are you from the console? Are there any sources of interference? Are the joy cons fully charged?

I guess if all else fails, you can pick up a pro-controller...not much of a solution :( sorry about that.

I am about 6 feet from the TV/Console.

I do have a Google Wifi on the top of the TV unit about 3 or 4 feet away and unsure if that may be causing any issues.

It is very sporadic and happens at the worst times while I play it seems. I am pretty annoyed about it as I was so excited to sit and finally dive into BOTW and then that.
[doublepost=1489072192][/doublepost]

Not to me it doesn't and I am not attempting that at all.

I am within my return window and will definitely be following up with Nintendo.

No spoilers? But you seem to have a low tolerance for spoilers :)

Without barely even a *trace* of spoilers...I think...ymmv...:

I would rate the emotional side of the game to be up there with OoT. At this point, I would still rate OoT higher, but that is because I know how it played out, and the time that has passed since 1998 has compressed all the wandering around I had to do, to figure stuff out. BotW certainly starts out with a lot of emotional urgency...but then you have to find your way around a huge map. So really, the jury is still out for the final score.

Re: Music. Well, there is a lot more emphasis on atmospheric sounds. In practice this means is that you really only get steady music around settlements. In fact, I find myself lingering around a couple for extra minutes, just to hear some of my favorite tunes, before going off...into the Wild!

I found this info on the Nintendo website:
http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/22513/p/897

  • Try to decrease the distance between the Joy-Con and the Nintendo Switch console.
  • Ensure that the Nintendo Switch console is placed to minimize interference with the Joy-Con. It is best if the Nintendo Switch console is placed out in the open and that it is not:
    • Behind a TV
    • Near an aquarium
    • Placed in or under a metal object
    • Pressed against a large amount of wires and cords
    • Within three to four feet of another wireless device, such as a wireless speaker or a wireless access point.
  • In most cases it will be enough to move these devices three to four feet away from the Nintendo Switch console and/or Joy-Con controllers.
