Does apple ship products on saturday?

Unfortunately no as FedEx and UPS generally do not pickup on Saturdays. I only know of a very few freight companies that actually pick up on a Saturday because they are trying to stand out from the rest but all things considered none of these companies are fully (inter)-nationwide unlike FedEx or UPS.

Can anyone confirm whether or not the new iMacs are using a different firmware version? I'm wondering about fan management in the new ones.

I have boot ROM version: 5.2.2f2

New 2GHz 20" gives Boot ROM Version: 5.2.5f1

Anyone know what kind (i.e brand/model #) of memory modules are in the new iMac's? I want to add a 512MB stick but apparently they have to be matching pairs in order to get the benefits of the 128bit memory architecture. You'll probably have to open up the back to check, but it will help a lot of people ;)

I'm a "Preparing Shipment" now. Woo! Very, very exciting. Now to order that RAM from Crucial...

Heh I ordered my memory a month ago. I thought I was going to get a rev A imac with my tax refund until the delays prevented me from doing that (being european and living in the US... in europe we put our bday like this: DD-MM-YYYY, here it is MM-DD-YYYY... didn't pay attention) so as luck would have it now I am getting a rev B...

However I ordered one gig so I'll end up putting in the two crucial sticks (as they are the same brand, speed, etc.) and selling the stick that comes in the imac on ebay for a mere $30 - $40 or something like that.

I can see myself upgrade to 2gb in the next year though but so far a lot of people have said that 1gb is fine.

I thought what the hell (again), an extra £80 and i could have a new iMac with a lot more features. SO i have sold my iMac for £999 to some guy and gonna be trapsing down to the Regent street store with my 10% off card :D to get a brand new 20".
I am just waiting for the guy to come over and collect it and pay cash, well looking forward to it. Also just got a great deal on some Crucial ram, i think i got 2 1Gb's for just over £150 so my iMac will be fully maxed out.
I called up Regent street store and they have sold out and getting a shipment early next week, i hope i can pick one up. I am unsure whether or not i can carry the box through London and back to Weybridge or get it delivered. Hmmm.

i dont know much about firmwares but does the version difference between 5.2.5f1 and 5.2.2f1 make a big difference?

There may not be many differences, but they could be significant. Perhaps some better fan control or something. Or it may have just needed to be updated to support the new graphics IC.

So why hasn't Apple posted a firmware update for the RevA iMacs?

While that does seem like a reasonable thing for them to do, the Rev B's might not automatically just work in the A, as the motherboard (aka midplane) has apparently been reworked quite a bit in Rev B to accomodate the 9600, so many of the changes in the new firmware could be related to that.

I ordered a iMac G5 20" 250 gb with 512 mb. Right now it is "Sent To Manufacturing", i am supposedly getting it on the 16th or before. Do they usually come before or are they pretty accurate?

I also had a question concerning changing RAM, I have changed it on my PC, is it easier on an iMac? and is there anything I should reference off?

edit: Not a G6, G5 :p

Apple has been good with shipping times in my experience...might come a day or two before. In general changing the RAM is the same as on a PC. The iMac's memory slots aren't blocked by wires or anything that you might find on a PC though.

Personally I think Apple is doing great on shipping times a few days after a new product release.

I ordered my 20" imac on friday afternoon (12:40pm PDT) and by 5pm PDT it was "Preparing shipment" the step before shipped.

Also on the ram thing, just make sure its mac compatible. Macs are much more pickier when it comes to memory but putting in the memory is much easier then on a PC as the previous reply mentioned, no wires in the way. When I put in memory for a customer who had an imac (2 months back) putting in memory was super easy. The lady was scared to even look at the guts of her computer.

what was the SATA issue? And could you show me a before and after example on the XBench?

D
I am not sure what the cause was, but the Rev A iMacs had suprisingly slow SATA performace. The highest disk score I saw for these iMacs on xbench was 105 with a 7200rpm drive and 110 with a raptor. Compare this to 130-140 on a Powermac or 130's on an eMac (IDE). This can be seen on any Rev A iMac in this list.

Second to the graphics update, this is the biggest deal, IMHO.

Does "Est. Ship 05/16/2005" mean the time when it will leave the Apple warehouse or is that when it should arrive on my doorstep?

Time when it leaves Apple. I purchased 15 minutes after the store opened on 5/3/05 and my "Est ship date" was 5/10/05 via Free Shipping. It went to Sent to Manufacturing on 5/4/05 and is still in that status as of this morning. I would expect it to go to Preparing for Shipment today and Shipped tomorrow. If not, then a call to the store is in order I guess. My credit card has not yet been charged. The Apple Care was received last Friday and ordered at the same time. I ordered the stock 2.0, 20" with the optional BT Mouse and Keyboard.

I ordered on 5/4/05 it went from "Sent to Manufacturing" to "Preparing for Shipment" on 5/8/05. My Est shipment is 5/10/05 also, with the same setup! :)

Where are they shiping from?

My PB 17" came directly from Fernley, Nevada warehouse in Nov '04. My Mini (which I returned) shipped from China. I would expect the iMac to ship from a California warehouse or the warehouse in Fernley, Nevada which usually takes only 2 days by ground. However, I really don't know which source will ship the new iMac. I hope there is not some confusion with my order and it goes to Preparing for Shipment today.

Note: I just remembered the PB was bought from Amazon and the warehouse in Nevada belongs to Amazon I think. So it should come from California unless they make a drop ship directly from China.
