One thing that drives me away from Librem is their super aggressive branding. Heck they even ship a modified version of K-9 Android mail app as Librem Mail. I guess it's part of the strategy though as the crowds prefer to follow the brand more than anything.

On the other hand their efforts in a) disabling ME, at least partially b) contributing to the libre mobile ecosystem by effectively making a great part of GNOME mobile responsive shouldn't be under appreciated.

With Librem5 they are not just throwing a device out there hoping for the devs to pay attention (think Pinephone) but are actually taking ownership of the user and developer experience. This is a big investment to make.

The PowerPC laptop project doesn't seem to be moving anywhere. Thanks for the powerprogress Debian repos though!

But the Sawtooth, even in 1999, is true New World. Correct?
All Mac's after the Beige G3 are New World, starting with the iMac G3.

Old World Mac's have a 4MB bootrom, New World Mac's have a 1MB bootrom and do ROM in RAM, AKA the Mac OS ROM file in the systems folder.

Remove the Mac OS ROM file from the System Folder, and an Old World Mac won't care, it loads the System file( AKA Nano Kernel ) directly.

New World ROM's need the Mac OS ROM file, can't boot OS 8/9 without it.

The Wikipedia page on the Beige G3 suggests that it maybe able to boot both ways, either from the 4MB BootROM or from the Mac OS ROM file. We've tried it in Qemu-System-PPC, but it always bombs out with a bus error when loading the Nano Kernel.

No citation was given on the Wikipedia page as to the source that the Beige G3 could boot New World, so the info maybe false, or misleading.

Yeah, unfortunately, I think it’s vaporware.

They are still working on it, it's a big task, compounded by the fact they want a 100% Open system, from the hardware->firmware->OS.

It may yet not come to pass, but it won't be for the lack of trying.

If they do get a production model out the door, I can't wait to get my grubby little hands on one;-)

Many thanks to @Jordan XP for organizing everything into individual tabs, which was something I've previously tried and failed to do (considering how buggy the 'spoiler' mechanic is).

Excellent work. :)

Lot's of talented people here! Considering Jordon is 10, thats a really big achievement. And he isnt the only kid interested in older Mac's...

Yep, even if it means having to exclude this domain from NoScript.

Yeah, that was the one caveat. I realized that after I made that post.

But I suppose it does more good than harm. After all, it's far easier to access and navigate now, and how many users were likely visiting this script-less in the first place?

I've got Debian 10 running on my quad G5 and I've been configuring small things for the past few days.

I followed the directions in the FAQ, but I'm not having luck with sound. Any ideas?

Also, YouTube videos aren't playing in the Firefox ESR and installing VLC didn't seem to change anything. Perhaps I need some of the additional packages? By the way, VLC is crashing whenever I try to play any video files.

Once I work out these issues I think I'll be near 100% functional.

Also, YouTube videos
Check out youtube-dl. It's a CLI program that can download YouTube (and many other types) videos for offline viewing in your favorite program.

If VLC is acting up as you say, give mpv a try.

These are just a couple of my silly hipster Linux programs that I love.

Install pavucontrol. Please post screenshots of each pane (ex. Playback, Output, Configuration, etc.).

Change Firefox's user agent to IE 11's as described in the Faster YouTube Performance subsection under the Performance sector.

Otherwise, Arctic Fox is recommended for general browsing and YouTube playback. A complimentary semi-automatic installer for it is available in the Software sector that makes installation, updates, and removal a breeze.

The OpenBSD Wiki has been delayed to September 9th, 2019 due to the immanency and complications surrounding Hurricane Dorian.

Thank you for your patience.

See the attached files. Under "Output Devices" only headphone is available, but if I plug headphones in there is no sound.

First picture, in the Output Devices. Your Shasta Mac etc. is muted. Click the leftmost button with the X in it to un-mute it.

In the Configuration pane, change Analog Stereo Duplex to Analog Stereo Output.

That should be it. Make sure the volume is up.

EDIT: Alright, it's working now. I didn't realize you meant I had to turn the volume up the WHOLE way :)

However, I'm still not able to play YouTube videos. The video just appears as if it's loading infinitely. In fact, I can't play videos back on this machine period. After my bad luck with VLC I installed totem. The screen resizes as if a video is about to begin playing, but then nothing happens. Maybe I'm missing some codecs?

Use Arctic Fox / SpiderWeb.

Totem isn't very good. It's a resource hog, and it doesn't allow for the realm of control that VLC does.

This shouldn't be a codec issue. Try a normal .mp4 with VLC. AF / SW should work out of the box.

Vanilla, SD MP4s result in an instant crash with VLC, and the other players behave similarly. MP3s play fine.

If it matters, I'm running Xfce.

EDIT: Here's the error I'm getting when running from the console.

VLC media player 3.0.7.1 Vetinari (revision 3.0.7.1-0-gf3940db4af)
libva info: VA-API version 1.4.0
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/powerpc-linux-gnu/dri/nouveau_drv_video.so
libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_1_4
Illegal instruction

You wouldn't happen to be running the ppc64 variant, would you?

One from the powerprogress repo you mean? Nope. I don't think VLC is available there anyway.

Some Googling seems to suggest this is related to libgl1-mesa-dri.

EDIT: I installed the newest libgl1-mesa-dri from snapshot as well as the one previous to what was already installed and had no luck. I also rolled back xserver-xorg-video-nouveau to an older version, but that didn't help.

At least YouTube is working in ArticFox now though.

If you wanted to know, on Monday through Friday I as a 5th grader have school from 7am to 3pm. That's when you should not try to communicate with me.

No, the official images from cdimage.debian.org.

So it was downloaded from here, via the Debian 10 link in the Downloads center then?

I only ask because I've only ever seen that error in the ppc64 environment, and not in the powerpc realm. In any case, we can make sure with uname -srp.

Launch VLC from console again, then run cat /var/log/syslog and see what it says at the bottom portion, at the end area. Usually, something should stick out.
