Most Apple-haters are:

1) Google, Adobe, MS, Dell, Samsung, Sony, HTC, Palm, RIM, etc. employees. :D

2) They just bought a netbook, kindle, nook, etc. and are feeling a little insecure that the iPad will make them look like losers. :D

In fact the wife and I get into arguments about this all the time. When she grabs the netbook to look something up, then doesn't properly shut down the machine. The next day I get to have a netbook with only 50% charge because it went to "sleep" instead of shutting down.

My wife will shut down my windows laptop, then immediately close the screen, and it goes to sleep before the shut-down process completes. So, when I open it again, the first thing it does is complete the shutdown process, and turn itself off... now with half-dead battery. It's almost comical... and is simply bad design. A well-designed computer will work how you intend, not force you to do learn how the computer works.

You just won today's Oversimplification Award!

Speaking for myself, I don't like Apple because of their ironfisted ways, reluctance to provide openness in the face of their many screw ups (too many to list), Job's relentless reality distortion field, their lack of focus groups...so we end up with products that Jobs wants--not necessarily what potential customers want. And here Apple sits, after all these years with a TINY slice of the computer sales pie. Sure, the iPhone and ipods sell well, and they DO make a profit, but as an end user, I am not at all happy with Apple. One example: as a consumer, I want products with USER REPLACEABLE BATTERIES!! I don't want to wait 2 years for cut and paste... I want to know that somewhere, in the deep recesses of a building in Cupertino, occasionally sits a large panel of randomly selected "average consumers" who, upon penalty of death should they reveal any "secrets", get to pass judgment on potentially new Apple products. Is that so much to ask??

IF that's precisely what she keeps doing, then you could set the lid closing action to either "none" or "shut down". Problem solved, if you are ok with either of those two actions upon lid closure.

Many of the naysayers have pretty good reasons. For many the iPad is just a waste of space and hype. Have fun using your iPad as a primary computer.

Remove iPad from this quote and insert any of the following....Macbook air, iPhone, iPod, Unibody Macbook, 13" Macbook Pro, and it will seem familiar.

Once you actually begin to use the device, the hype won't just be hype anymore.

I'm not entirely sure I get your angle, but at least some of those arguments made sense this time.

Though I should put out there that I believe Apple and their "assisted leaks" are much better than focus groups. They spread some information to media outlets, whom spread it to the public, the public reacts, apple gets input. It's not like Steve says "Well... the public would probably want a camera... LET'S JUST USE AN IPS SCREEN INSTEAD." They're very good at putting out products that, even if not initially, are very successful (minus Apple TV.)

And I stand behind the non replaceable battery. I've had to "replace" my Dell XPS m1330's battery numerous times over it's life span. My girlfriends Macbook Pro with non-replaceable battery is still as good as the day she got it. By this time with my laptop the life had gone down 1/4th about.

You can always use Dell, HP, Acer, etc. nobody's forcing you to use Apple products. :) I don't like Dell, Google, etc. but I don't go to forums telling people how much these companies suck. (well sometimes :D )

If you don't like Apple why do you consistently spend a good portion of every day trolling on a forum dedicated to Apple products?

Don't you have things you like and enjoy and can't you spend your time on forums for those things? I don't understand your misapplied use of time.

There are lots of things I don't like, yet I don't spend any time on forums for any of them. Weird huh?

2) They are going to buy the iPad and are feeling insecure about their decision and need to justify why they are buying it and insisting why other technologies are inferior or options are not needed on the device to avoid looking like a loser fanboy. :)

See - I can make a stupid generalization too.

You're certainly correct about your generalizations being stupid :)

BTW back to the prior exchange, you're completely splitting hairs over the difference b/t a utopian future and a utopian vision of the iPad and its ecosystem. We both know that the latter is what we're both talking about and every single one of my points and arguments applies validly thereto.

I'm not sure why you persist in distracting from the primary points. Apparently you believe the iPad does not meet your needs. Fine, don't buy one.

I'll be happily using mine as my primary computer.

We need to go back to this conversation?

And I was mocking the person above for his over generalization. Certainly you know that.

But yes - the iPad as presented isn't enough of a "magical" device to get me to buy one for myself. I'm not buying a device that might have features and benefits I want in the future. And I don't think I'm alone in this philosophy. If I'm going to plunk down $499 - $900 - it's going to be for something that I either just want to toy around with or something that delivers something I need "now." I don't think it's a hard concept to understand nor accept that when and if the iPad "proves" itself with software and/or hardware that I want and can find use for, I'll revisit my decision.

Neither side should have to "prove" why they iPad is for them or not for them. Neither side is going to change the other person's mind.

Mm hmm. And you sure spend a lot of time around here for someone who has already determined that the iPad is not for them. Why is that exactly?

I answered this for someone else Anthony.

I am happy to engage in intelligent (and sometimes not so much) conversation about a myriad of topics whether or not I want to buy something. Can only those that want to make a purchase discuss such topics?

I talk about football - that doesn't mean I want to play.

I talk about infrastructures using portal technologies, autonomic monitoring and such but I don't have a need or want one

I talk at great length about politics - get the picture?

Wow what a thread....
Don't let my low post count fool you.. I have been using, playing with, testing on macs/apple products for years... I just joined this forum for info on jailbreaking tecnics for the touch i bought (paid $50CDN for it) jailbroke it.. liked my 80gig Archos BETTER for what I needed then sold the touch for $175CND!!! Ok so now onto the ipad... to me this is just another touch albeit bigger... but still a touch... I have no use for it as I don't have a data plan and my home highspeed internet is REALLY REALLY expensive (wireless highspeed with 10gig cap) So downloading apps/movies/music etc. is out of the question... My car A/V unit supports my Archos... not an ipod... I have had an iphone, WM 6.5 phone and now am trying an android phone (which I like the best) I have 2 laptops, a VERY Highend Video editing PC.. Yes I know I have tried the macbook pro but not fond of it or the price of them... To me Apple puts out items the common facebook/twitter/myspace/itunes user thinks they will need... I am in no way bashing SJ or Apple.. They are VERY GOOD at marketing the products they sell.. I am a die hard linux user by trade/profession so the apple os and winblows don't really do much for me...

On to the points about using this "thing" as a main unit.. if all you do is surf/listen/post/follow/or watch then YEP IT WILL DO!!! And as everyone can see with the amount of growth twitter and facebook has had then Apple is doing a wonderful job giving those users what they want!!!
As for my wife and myself this will not do, niether will a netbook... neither is really good for doing heavy programming on or a lot of video editing work... Yes my main laptop is a winblows unit(has to be for what my full time job requires) BUT my puter I use the most when not working has 3 OSs on it... Linux,WinXP, and OSX.... anyways I still think this is just a BIG TOUCH with a few enhancements added to it and I don't see myself wanting/buying one...

To all the people who have one or will be getting one let me know what you fully think of the unit and not what you want everyone to think about it... I love new tech and like to try as much as I can.

SamCraig is on my ignore but I will address his misplaced points.

Those are things you are interested in not things you hate.

Spending substantial time on forums for things you dislike and discussing them is a waste of time.

I don't like High School Lacrosse so I don't spend hours every day on High School Lacrosse forums talking about how much High School Lacrosse sucks.

That is the point.

Life is too short to spend all your free time pursuing things with hatred.

In other words, when it comes to life, some of you are simply doing it wrong.

Funny, immature and cowardly for someone to respond when they have me on ignore. What's really the point in replying back to Marksman?

I don't hate the iPad at all. Nothing I've said even indicates that. I didn't realize one had to gush over a product to NOT be considered a hater. I can like a product and it not be for me.

Someone can tell Marksman - if he hates me, why does he respond back to me. Spending time on this forum engaging me in conversation is a waste of time. Life is too short to spend his time pursuing things with dislike. In other words - he's a hypocrite.

Wow, there are some strong feelings in this thread.

To add my perspective, I am not sold on the iPad functionality but I like the form factor. I am going to wait till the iPad is jailbrakeable. The iPhone is a good device on its own but after jailbreak it becomes the best device on the market. I am sure the iPad will follow similar lines once you are able to multitask (backgrounder+proswitcher), view flash video (via imobilecinema or unlimvideos), have complete file system access for loading your own files (iFile), playing other video formats (VLC) and so on.
