I don't understand why people are comparing the iPhone X to an iPhone 8+. If I wanted a brick I would get the plus model. If wanted a 'normal' sized phone that I can use with one hand which has a gorgeous display I would get the iPhone X. There is no comparison with the plus models. Maybe next year Apple will release an iPhone XS Plus and all the people that want a brick will be satisfied. Until then just stick to the plus model and stop moaning!

I would like to know why they decided to change the screen aspect ratio as in my opinion a 16:9 screen with tiny bezels would have been great. A phone with the 8 or 8 Plus screen but without the top and bottom bezels I would definitely have bought, but after playing with the Galaxy S8 it was clear that for me a taller screen is neither useful or desirable. If this aspect ratio is here to stay, I may be looking at other phones in the future.

Yup, it's been well documented/discussed. Slightly narrower, but taller. Should feel great in the hand. Looking forward to the new size. I would imagine Plus users going to the X know and want this.

I don't think there was any confusion. the X has always fallen in the middle with an equivalent 5" 16:9 screen (1920x1080)

iPhone (6,7,8) 4.7"
iPhone X 5.0" screen
iPhone (6,7,8) Plus 5.5" screen

it's not a larger phone we have known that

This is pretty much the only reason I'm not completely sold on it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not angry at Apple for a smaller form factor or anything I just like the big screen of the Plus. I'm sure I'll get an X because if I don't order in that first 30 seconds I won't be able to grab one for months and months but I would love to hold one in my hand before making the purchase. Maybe I should print out one of those pdf thingys...

STOP COMPARING IPHONE X TO IPHONE 8 PLUS

IPHONE X BELONGS TO THE NON-PLUS FAMILY

NEXT YEAR WE'LL SEE IPHONE SIMILAR TO X BUT FROM THE PLUS FAMILY, WHICH WILL HAVE A 6.4" DISPLAY

You two don't make sense. The reason that it's being compared to the Plus model is because it is too big to use one handed especially with the removal of the home button and reachability. Not to mention the price is closer to the Plus with very little difference the main one being the screen so comparing them makes sense. Truth is the X is in a category of its own so it's fair to compare it to all of the mobile devices. Oh, and you guys are kind of just assuming they'll make a Plus model next year.

what a hype machine these Apple guys are, huh??

did you ever imagine some of it is half fake news,
so people like you and me would think so
and hurry grabbing it before it ends?

don't be so eager for a 1st gen phone.
i really think that after a month "somehow"
they'll be able to supply all devices... ;)

It’s being compared to the plus models because Apple and others repeatedly note that it has a larger display than any other iPhone. This thread is addressing the fact that this is open to interpretation. It’s misleading at best, an outright lie at worst.

One of the main reasons I will purchase the X is because it gives me the screen size of an iPhone 7 Plus in the size of the iPhone 7.

It will be easier to use one handed than the plus models because it's width is smaller. Also, it's not been confirmed if reachability has been removed or not. Technically it is a bigger screen than the plus phones because screen size is measured on the diagonal, but obviously due to the aspect ratio change overall screen usability is less, but this is a compromise I'm prepared to make for a smaller form factor. Also I said 'maybe' if Apple release an XS Plus next year. Anyway I'd still be buying a regular sized iPhone not a plus model...ever; ain't nobody got time for that!

You’re not very technologically literate if you don’t know that a much narrower device (and therefore screen), results in a smaller 16:9 display area.

lol. Please show me your thread where you detail how the X's screen size before the keynote. Oh, you didn't make one? Those didn't come out until the day of, and after the keynote?

The number of know-it-alls in this thread is astounding. Quit fronting. It's embarrassing.

What I would be curious to know is how much of that screen is actually usable? Meaning, the "ears" make up part of the measurement of 5.8 that Apple is claiming, but in reality, are you really going to have text and imaging, roll up the hump, over the hump and down the other side of the hump, or is that whole length from the bottom of the sensors to the top of the phone un-usable as part of the screen? If that is the case, you can brag 5.8" screen, but it's not really usable for the consumer.

Even on the Apple web site it states:

  • * Coming this fall.
  1. The iPhone X display has rounded corners that follow a beautiful curved design, and these corners are within a standard rectangle. When measured as a standard rectangular shape, the screen is 5.85 inches diagonally (actual viewable area is less).
Seems kinda shady and selling something as more than it really is imo. Also, there is small bezels around the entirety of the device, which also precludes use, so YES it is 5.8" screen, but I am speculating you might get between 5.5 - 5.7" total usable screen.

I have a dummy model X that works with the real cases I bought. It's the same dimensions as the X but it's 4g heavier.

IPhone X has 5% less viewing area than iPhone 8+, but a higher resolution, so it can show more information in the same area. And a physical size just a little larger than an iPhone 8. This is why I really want the X, I can finally get the larger screen size and extra features of the Plus lines, without a giant phone in my pocket/hand (for me the Plus is giant).

i'm sorry but just because you didn't realize this beforehand doesn't mean no one else could. And no one is going to open a topic about something that was always clear to them. the dimensions have been known for months and there were alot of android devices that went the same route of a taller but not wider screen.

the verge even had an article about this emerging problem with screen sizes back in march.

lol. Nothing about the X's screen there, buddy. I can't even say nice try. This is just sad.

What is with you people? It's not that hard to say: "No, before the keynote, before articles and developers pointed it out, I did not know the X's screen was narrower than the 6/7/8. Before articles came out, I did not know usable screen real estate would be much smaller than expected."

To address someone else, no, no one made these analyses based on the dummy iPhones. Why? Because none of those screens lit up. We had no idea what the actual screen dimensions were. WE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IF THE NOTCH WAS REAL.

I really don't know why people want to sound like they are smarter than other people over screen size. How insecure must you be?

I love how tech savvy people
Come and ask “why is this confusing” I’m a surgeon and say the same thing in the OR. Bunch of imbeciles. Lol.

the link was about how the new aspect ratio makes it hard to compare screen sizes. it is the same problem for all phones.

leaks of the iphone have been around for months too. may:

https://9to5mac.com/2017/05/30/iphone-8-dimensions-size-comparison/

or even as early as february, talking about a 5.8'' screen with the size of a 4.7'' iphone and showing the new aspect ratio:
http://bgr.com/2017/02/16/iphone-8-release-specs-display-touch-id/

let's not forget about the CAD schematic leaks in may, the dimensions were spot on.
https://www.macrumors.com/2017/05/10/iphone-8-cad-renders-images/

the homepod leak a month before the keynote, definitely confirming the notch from early mockup devices:
https://9to5mac.com/2017/08/10/home...e-8-screen-layout-resizable-home-button-more/
https://www.macworld.com/article/32...ails-we-learned-from-apples-homepod-leak.html

and the iOS 11 GM leak, removing the last shred of doubt, days before the keynote:
https://www.macrumors.com/2017/09/09/ios-11-golden-master-leaked/

while many of those were very early and made it hard to be sure at the time, the HomePod and iOS leaks definitely confirmed all the previous rumours ahead of the keynote and left not a single bit of doubt that the earlier leaks were actually true.

but i have to say it was actually fun to "go back in time" now and follow the trail of what became the iPhone X.

Y’ALL! The real question is what happened to all of those rumors about a 5.8” display with only 5.1” of it being usable??? THANK GODNESS that never panned out! I can’t wait to get my hands on this OLED display and see what Apple has done to fine tune it for color accuracy. Space Grey X for me!

There seems to be a lot of confusion in this thread regarding "size". Probably because there are actually 3 interesting sizes to consider.

1. You have the physical screen size. You hold a ruler up and read the value. That's your size.
2. Number of pixels available in the screen
3. How those pixels translate to x, y coordinates on the screen.

The difference between #2 & #3 is a little tricky. But if you think back to when retina screens were released, it starts to make sense. When retina came along (a change in #2), we had 4x the pixels even though the physical screen size (#1) didn't change and you could still only have 4 icons across the home screen (#3).

I think too many people are comparing apples and oranges in this thread and don't even realize it. It's no wonder this thread is just one big argument.

The problem is, that couldn’t be done because the physical space that the technology they’ve improved to would not fit in that much smaller device. You’d lose massive battery, speaker quality, etc etc

I'm not trying to sound smarter than anyone, but lots of people already knew or strongly suspected this from the dummies once the dimensions "leaked". The screens not lighting up is irrelevant because presumably it would all light up. If anything, it was assumed that more of the display would be dedicated to on-screen controls (ie. a virtual home button) so long before the keynote people were saying that it would have a smaller usable display than the Plus.

The insecure person here is you. You refuse to admit that you simply didn’t think about it fully. Or maybe you just weren’t knowledgeable enough on the subject matter to think it through.

If someone understands what aspect ratio is and they know that the iPhone will have a smaller body with a 5.8” Display, then they would easily conclude that the aspect ratio is vastly different than the previous iPhones which have 16:9 aspect ratios. They’d know this because the width of the phone is much narrower than the Plus, but the top and bottom bezels have been removed. Again, if this person understands aspect ratio then they’d know this means that when speaking about 16:9 aspect ratio, the new device will have a much smaller display diagonal than the Plus, but a slightly larger one than the 4.7”.

Simply; screen sizes for 16:9:

iPhone 8: 4.7”
iPhone X: 5.0”
iPhone 8 Plus: 5.5”

Cool. So where was your post before the keynote again? I keep seeing people post links to articles about Androids, and general leaks about the notch from the home pod, but not a single one of you, even with perfect hindsight, has posted an article regarding the X and it's specific screen dimensions. Or even better yet to prove your point, since this was so obvious, link to your personal post about the screen dimensions/size.

Get over yourselves.

Your reasoning is completely circular: "it's obvious because it's obvious. These are the specs because we know these are the specs."

Yeah, we know now. After the keynote. After developers commented. After articles were written.

Show me YOUR post before any of the releases about how this was obvious.
