The cheapest iPADs didn't have that. Perhaps Air and Pro both did. So what Apple really improved with the 2024 models? Did they remove completely from the 256 / 512 GB versions, and only put any coating in the 1 / 2 TB? If the answer is yes, this may also be a way of fooling us.
Don't really know what you talking about. The antireflective coating of course is on the 2024 pros aswell. You can see it in the technical specs.

Here is a superb review imo. Not in English, but very watchable with closed-captioning. The level of depth and analysis put many of the others to shame.

The reviewer does quite a deep dive on the nano-texture display and speaks of it very highly. It seems it does improve the writing / drawing experience, massively reduces glare; however blacks are slightly washed out in some places, but nowhere near as much as using a paper-like screen protector or equivalent. In the end however, he recommends it is used only by professionals who absolutely need this kind of display.

So based on this everyone who had previously said the texture is not different and is not more “paper-like” is a moron. (emphasis on “more”, it’s NOT as paper-like as a Paperlike screen protector, but it is more paper-like)
This video is also backing it up -

Auto translate works quite well, he speaks about it at 12 minutes in.

It's going to be interesting to see how others think it feels in real-life. I'm interested in not having to put paper-like screen protectors on and as this review notes, the anti-reflective coating is much better than a screen protector. I am wondering if Apple will get the taptic feedback refined enough to not necessarily need any paper-like protector nor matte screen someday. I imagine the taptic feedback should be able to close the gap about paper feeling but perhaps that will never be the case.

Just an aside... the production values of that review video are astonishing.

I’m 100% on board for nano.

Disclaimer- I am a visual artist and color theory professor, so probably the exact target demographic for the nano texture, YMMV. I always opted for the matte option on the old MacBook Pros back in the day before I became iPad only in 2018.

There is a somewhat intangible quality to matte displays that, so far, I have only seen iJustine touch on among the early reviews: high quality matte displays almost seem…dare I say, magical.

The lack of reflection greatly reduces any sense of separation between the viewer and displayed content. It’s almost like a moving painting or open window into a different world. To paraphrase Justine, her brain could hardly process what she was looking at, in a good way. To me, this hard-to-describe effect, in addition to superior drawing tactility, far outweighs any minimal loss of contrast at certain angles.

So, going for the nano was an easy decision. By the sounds of it, it is the best display ever produced by Apple. And if somehow I find the nano texture unsatisfactory, I can return my unit for a standard display the same day, which cannot be said for the reverse scenario.

I'm swinging back and forth between nano and non-nano, but that sentence made me so hyped for the nano.

Nice demonstration of the non-nano outdoor vs the 2022 iPad Pro and vs a Samsung tablet.

The anti-reflective coating on the non-nano works as intended and puts the Samsung alternative to shame.

I bet a lot of people cover the anti-reflective coating of their iPad Pro or iPad Air with a glossy 10$ tempered glass screen protector and ruin their viewing experience with a ton of reflections. Basically they voluntarily downgrade their display to the reflectivity level of the 349$ base 10th gen iPad (the only iPad without the anti-reflective coating).

I didn't say the AR coating is not there in the standard glass 2024 iPAD.

I hinted that perhaps there's little of this coating when compared to non-OLED iPADs which also had this, meaning:

It's scarce in the regular 2024 glass screen, and it's a lot (very, very low... in the nano-texture glass). I saw a Youtube review comparing the two 2024 OLEDs and the standard glass reflects a lot more than NANO, which is very insignificant, you can barely see any ambient light on the black screen.

It was said older iPADs reflected just 1.7 percent of the ambient light.

If older iPADs were like that, don't you think this is either the same or, say, 3% to make it look way worse in the 2024 iPADs (256 or 512 GB), then 0.5% in the nano models (1 or 2 TB)?

We need in-depth reviews of this new technology (besides pointing out OLED is better).

I don’t follow. Do you suggest that Apple is artificially making the 2024 non-nano Pros more reflective in order to make the nano Pros look better in comparison? That doesn‘t make any sense as no matter how big the difference is surely >90% of Pros sold will be non-nano either way; Apple will not make the best-seller artificially worse.

A couple of reviews showed the 2022 and 2024 Pros side by side, and the glare was virtually the same on both.

Just to add my experience with a similar display on Steam Deck; it’s VERY hard to keep it fingerprint free. Getting rid of smudges isn’t easy.

I now have the glossy Deck and it’s way easier to keep clean.

I am tempted to get the nano screen, as I prefer matte screens and they usually don’t show fingerprints as much.

I can’t believe it is backordered so long. I should have ordered that first, before the normal screen iPad Pro 13. Hope stores have the nano screen on display tomorrow.

I love a nice matte display. Maybe im just used to it and it feels more "classic" to me now. Perhaps in the same way that some folks still prefer vinyl for the "warmth" it provides. Even though it's objectively inferior by every measure.

Shinier surfaces are better. I hope Apple releases a mirrored or a chrome ipad finish next model. I will pay anything for this feature.

With all due respect for him and for this particular compromise that gives him peace of mind (and as someone who used to this myself to every iPad I bought as soon as I unboxed it), it's such a waste to see an awesome tandem OLED display with a superb anti-reflective coating being ruined by that cheap reflective screen protector.

Maybe AppleCare+ could be an alternative to screen protectors? (note: apparently scratches alone are not enough for a repair, but like if you get a huge scratch across the display maybe you'll get upset, your hands may get slippery and the iPad could totally accidentally hit the curb *wink wink*)

Okay, I just picked up my iPad Pro M4 from my local Apple Store. I bought standard glass but there was a nano textured one there to try, which I really wanted to see in person.

My impressions: it’s gorgeous in terms of how well it diffuses reflections. Really wonderful. Having said that, colors were a bit too washed out for my taste and you could IMMEDIATELY tell it was a nano textured one because the black in the background looked grey and much lighter than the black bezels on the iPad.

Since I will be adding a tempered glass onto mine for protection, I will use it mainly indoors, will be doing video and photo editing (so color accuracy is quite important to me) I think standard glass is the best option for me. But if you plan on using your iPad outdoors a lot, or have tons of light sources wherever you use it which CURRENTLY bother you (on your current iPad, I mean) then I would suggest giving the nano textured glass a try. It really works wonderfully for its intended use.

Thanks for the perspective. Interesting that in-person looks a lot like the videos seen. Excited to see it for myself tomorrow! Australia, Asia, and New Zealanders keep the perspectives coming. I still need to make a nano or no nano decision by tomorrow! I didn't preorder just gonna raw dog it and walk in the store at 10am tomorrow and buy something.

Hopefully they have it in stock at your local store! It wasn’t the case here, you still need to preorder it with around a month of waiting time (it was available on launch day if you ordered it last week).
Good luck :)

Nano: a lot better in eliminating refections (question left: how durable is it?)
Standard: better in blacks, contrast and colors

People just need to decide what's more important. And that's sometimes not so easy.

Im on holidays pretty soon. I would love the nano for that, because while laying at the pool it's the better iPad for sure. But in general I use the iPad 80% indoor with normal light conditions, so I went for the standard glass.

Thanks for the real world feedback. I’m getting a standard glass model today but expect a nano to arrive next month. My office has a lot of glare and I’ve been satisfied with the nano Studio Display for my work-from-home office. Looking forward to side-by-side comparisons. Anyway, enjoy your M4 iPad Pro! I get jealous of you Kiwis and Aussies who get first access to Apple products (apart from the Vision Pro). :)

Literally within minutes it slipped to mid-June shipments. I’m hoping it shows up in stores before then. I’ll be checking daily as I really want the nano display and would prefer not to wait until June 17.
