I was in the same dilemma as you but what tipped me over to my Note 8 which I picked up 2-3 weeks ago was this:
1) In Canada at least, Bell and Telus have improved their network speeds to aprx 750mbps (striving for Gigabit LTE). At least in the major cities at this time.
2) Apple deals with both Qualcomm and Intel for their modem chipset. Intel chips do not have the capacity for GB LTE. The closest they can reach is 600 mbps. (already 150 mbps less than the existing carrier upgrade). Some iPhones have Qualcomm chips which have the ABILITY to work and achieve GB LTE speeds if your carrier can manage it.
3) Apple has crippled the features on the Qualcomm chip to match that of the Intel chip (currently a lawsuit going on regarding this). So when they release the phones next year (Intel has a GB LTE chip in the works but not ready for release at this time). Your new phone, should you have bought one, will be unable to achieve the carrier max speed should it exceed 600 mbps!
4) Apple would not activate these chips because the uproar between the carriers that carry the Qualcomm chips vs the Intel chips would be insane!
5) after researching the chipsets sold on the 8 and 8 Plus in Canada for the Bell and Telus Carriers (basically CDMA not supported which is one of the requirements on the chipset to make the GB LTE work), as well as specific antenna types) are NOT the Qualcomm chips.
6) S8, S8+, and Note 8 support GB LTE out of the gate.

When I got the Note 3, I also got my wife a Note 3. She used the Note 3 to take all these photos of our children and other things. One night I went to back them up onto her PC, and they just disappeared. My wife was devastated and angry at me (saying it was my fault). Hundreds of photos of our kids’ first day at school, birthday parties, trips to the zoo, etc, gone. Not on her PC, not on her Note 3. I had uploaded photos from my own Note 3 several times before and never had an issue. But this one time, the photos that mattered, all gone. Vanished from existence. I spent hours trying to locate them. And didn’t. Samsung wasn’t any help either. I saw a friend on Facebook about a year ago write on Samsung’s FB page that she had a similar issue with her Galaxy 7, all gone. Boy was she angry. Samsung responded to her saying they would look into it and 4 weeks later she wrote on their page again saying you haven’t been any help. One thing with Samsung, it can be unreliable. Never ever had an issue with losing content on an iPhone.
Cheers.
Now a days it is virtually impossible to lose all of your photos, it seems every phone has some sort of "cloud" service, it's gotten to the point where I would NEVER dare take a risqué photo due to the fact that it would be automatically saved in Dropbox, Samsung cloud, Google drive and several other likely back up areas!! You couldn't delete it fast enough to prevent the upload, not to mention Facebook now offering to share your latest photo lol!
But sharing an experience with a 5+ year old device isn't valid input for current day phones now. MUCH has changed.
I preordered the pixel XL 2 and after playing around with it at a Verizon store I think I made i good decision. The note 8 is great just too much added on top of android skin. If you want something similar to an iPhone with fast updates get the pixel (awesome camera too). I’ll give it a shot. Im still considering the iPhone X but the lack of a FPS does bother me (please don’t try to justify it, not now at least) this applies to this first version so I can wait till after the holidays. For those “scared” to try the note 8 don’t be I have used all the notes except 7 and they are great phones! Give it time and patience, at least 10 days! It won’t disappoint!! Or get the S8+
If I wasn't in love with the stylus, I would have gone with the Pixel 2XL in a heartbeat, it looks like a really cool phone.
