LOL exactly, I cannot fathom how people can afford all these brand new flagships phones they switch out every couple months. Yeah if they are on the T-Mobile monthly JoD program, that makes sense,. but I don't think most of them are.

Must be millionaires on this forum :) To get every flagship phone released in a year, you'd be spending over $10,000 cash annually just for new phones.

And for what ? At the end of the day is the S8+ much worse than the Note 8 ? No. Is the LG V30 way better than the G6 ? No. Is the iPhone 8 Plus a must have over last years iPhone 7 Plus ? No.

Smartphones have plateaued in the last year or so. A Galaxy S7 Edge can do pretty much the exact same things the Galaxy S8+ can do. A iPhone 7 Plus can do the exact same things as the iPhone 8 Plus.

Who the hell would buy the Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note 8 all within in a few months of each other ? Makes no sense to me, and zero reason to do so in my opinion.
That's why I stick to the 2 year cycle. When it's time for me to upgrade, it's a bigger change and I'm actually excited for the device instead of the nitpicking I see. Going from the S6 to the Note 8 is a big difference. The battery life, the screen, the functionality, the camera etc. I look at all the good things that it has versus the small things another phone might be slightly better at. I was going to get the V30 if not for the S Pen so I don't hate that device at all. It's just funny hearing the sentiments from people acting like the Note 8 is the worst thing in the world just because the V30 might be better for some people. The same things apply to iPhones also. My issues with iPhones have more to do with Apple and how they run their business from a value standpoint. IPhones are damn good devices in their own right.

Lol, totally agree.

But as I am also a car enthusiast I have realised that people who do this usually sacrifice in other areas as they would rather spend more money on their passion/hobby.

I follow a guy on YouTube called "The Stradman" (real name James). The guy owns a Jeep Wrangler and a Lambo Gallardo, granted its an old Lambo but still a Lambo with Lambo maintenance and mods, which cost Lambo money. Guy was renting a room to stay in at a friend's place, I almost fainted when he explained this as to me I'd rather own a few properties of my own that generate income before I think of buying a Lamborghini. Many of the Car YouTubers live this sort of life, it is mindblowing to me, but rather them than me, we have them for entertainment I guess.

Now these are smartphones of course not cars but you may find that some of these guys are such tech enthusiasts they'd rather spend a little extra on tech than e.g. a holiday overseas or a new wardrobe or save up to payoff the car or house.

I could never buy more than 1 device a year. It takes me at least 2months to truly get used to a new device, even my current Note8 I am still adjusting to after S7 Edge. Yes I am settled with the Note8, but the honeymoon period and 'wow factor's linger for a long time for me, and I am glad it does lol, because setting up a new device is painful, be it a new Android phone or iPad, at least for me it does, I like to start afresh and I am very closed fisted when it comes to my money, I cannot justify a new phone multiple times a year, it's insane, even if we had JoD here.

Nice.
I’m thinking of picking one up as well. Wasn’t going to, but the more I see the pictures of it in the wild, the more I’m leaning towards preordering.

What exactly about these pictures is appealing to you? That is a serious question.

What I see in picture one is a shape with the very curved edges and chrome looking frame reminds me of the original iPhone, and the notch just screams out as ugh... worse in pictures that are landscape and its on the side. After a short time with the Note 8, those curved corners look dated to me. On the back, big hunk of camera sticking out like that on one corner messes up the symmetry on several levels. You can love the X or not, but looking at the pics I just don't get it.

Don't you see he is trying to push a narrative? The strange part is that the people he chose all agree that the Note8 is a great device but not for them, it's THAT simple, but he has a narrative he has to desperately push when it comes to Android

Every year he is here after some new release posting nonsense and then back peddling or trying to twist what has been said to follow his narrative.

For goodness sake the guy was arguing about minimal differences in side bezels of 2 phones, rather ignore him or things will get incredibly petty or read his posts and have a good laugh at how desperate it all looks, coming down here.

Of course there is a narrative or agenda... that is why I challenged the notion that there is some big body of people running away from the Note 8. There are definitely comments from some of the supposed leavers that lead me to believe that they have never even used one.

Like I mentioned. I know the iPhone 8 isn't much different from the 7 or 6. Same as the watch. But I am comfortable with them and they work great. The note is a great device and I've had most versions of them. But lately I am growing more towards apples ecosystem and so is my family.

I had the gear s3. It wasn't that great. Less quick into letting you know about alerts. It also a lot didn't recognized I got up and moved around and would tell me to start moving. The apple watch never did that.

If there is "not much different", why spend close to $1K to "upgrade"? That is where I found myself.

On the AW, my experience is completely the opposite of yours. Countless times the AW has told me to stand up when I was already doing something; or the annoying telling me to breath. The Gear S3 first off doesn't tell me to breath. It also doesn't tell me to just stand up. It tells me to stretch, do lateral twists, etc.. and it checks that I'm doing them. It automatically knows when I'm sleeping and tracks it. It knows when I'm working out and starts to track that. But the UI and rotating dial are just a better interface, particularly at the gym when you are sweaty.

Must be fun for you to put words in my mouth and call it an agenda.

Call it what you like.

Call it like I see it.

Just like I posted earlier.

Exactly... you keep posting that a lot of people are trading in their Note 8, is implying there is some big flee going on, which is not the case. These accounts are few... and are exactly the reasons I pointed out. Its great that we have choices that serve different preferences and needs for a smartphone.

Did I?

So again, not seeing this big number of Note 8 people ditching it that you are.

You added big numbers and ditching.

This is what I said:

From their posts most claimed they tried it but it wasn’t to their liking.
Some gave size and weight distribution as a reason, others claimed it was FPS placement, glare from the curved glass etc.

Others said they wanted a pixel xl2 instead. I interpreted that as wanting clean android as opposed to a skinned version.

Some got an iPhone 8 plus.

Then you say there aren’t any people exchanging the note 8
And introduced the term “real note 8 owners” as to those who haven’t exchanged their devices, a bit confusing

Not sure where you are seeing all these people exchanging their Note 8 for other devices. I think I'm following all the threads here related and the vast majority of what I consider real Note 8 owners seem to be happy. For those that "say" they don't like it and are swapping, it generally falls into one of several areas

I provided 6 or 7 examples and tsep provided one.

Not really few when you consider there maybe 12 or 14 active posters on the board currently have a note 8.

Lol!

I believe they've all owned the Note8 and found that it simply wasn't for them, reasoning being a few of my colleagues tried my Note8, they thought it was truly beautiful but most of them said they simply wouldn't be able to live with it. To some it's too tall and heavy while a few of the ladies said it's too "manly" due to its more squarer design. The design seems to be a little intimidating mixed with the phones heft for some.

This is why I have said many times, this device is not for everyone, and would appeal to the sort of people who would have back in the Symbian and WM days, would have gone for a Nokia E90, HTC TyTN-II, iMate JasJar or iMate Ultimate 9502, what it offers either suits you or will be wasted on you if you are not going to fully utilise it, IMO.

People must go and try the Note8 in store before buying it as I believe most would be happier with a S8 or S8+, don't just buy the Note8 because it's the latest Samsung.

I am still surprised the Note series sell as well as they do, to me they are niche devices, and when I hear it has surpassed 500,000 units sold I am shocked.

Agreed on the iPhone X, it's just not right.

I can see Apple doing a redesign or finding some other way around that notch in the next iteration.

Right, I wasn't meaning to compare the Note 8, because to me the S8 is the one that should be compared to the X. So the whole point of this thread is kind of off. I was just asking a genuine question about the pictures. The poster said they were looking at those pictures and it made them want to order one. I don't get it.

LOL on your list of niche phones... I had the Hitachi G1000 back in the day (far right in this picture, although all three of these were mine!)

Lol! Yeah, I loved those old school PocketPCs and Smartphones, they were not exactly for someone who was coming from a Moto RAZR V3 with the intention to do nothing but text and phone calls on hem, if you didn't fully utilise what they offered they were a waste on you, as they were large and heavy.

I still have that one and a box full of different models. I keep meaning to take some comparison pictures to the current phones as a trivia thing. When people call something huge these days, they have no idea. That G1000 was like holding a 2x4 up beside your head. It was such a cool device though.

I had this phone and loved it! The little antennae nub made it easy to get out of my pocket! :)

Absolutely insane 238g heavy and 23mm thick, and people are complaining about the Note8. LOL!

I was 13 when that phone came out in 2003. My dad used to come with PocketPCs, I became an enthusiast when he got the 1st HTC TyTN and a friend of his had a iMate JasJar, I was so amazed at how powerful they were. I then I got a Nokia N80 as it was much cheaper, think I was 15 or 16 when it came out, that was my 1st smartphone, loved going between Symbian and Windows Mobile.

Those were awesome phones back in the day, in particular the pocket PC ones. The iPAQ's bring back some fond memories.

I had a couple of those.

It all started with the handspring visor.

Nice collection... I need to really take some pics... this is going back to the good old days!

I am actually shocked now that I just pulled out the G1000 and layed it next to the Note 8. I'll just say the Note 8 carries its size well and doesn't look and feel nearly as big as the G1000, even though it is bigger ... but of course a lot thinner.

The i-mate SP5 was favorite phone from that era, it was expensive as hell for the time, but it was a little work horse. I wish I kept it.

Also, I still have my Treo Pro, the last phone I used before I purchased my first iPhone.

This was my first pocket PC phone, an iPAQ with a sprint 1xrt CF modem using VOIP, it was before any cellular model came out. I miss that setup, only because it required so much tinkering that was fun. Lol, I even remember the side grips on the iPAQ were removable and you could buy those aluminum ones like in the picture.

My first Pocket PC was the Pocket PC Phone Edition... aka the XDA that was the beginning of the XDA Developers site.

My collection dates back to the Early 90s. When mobile phone were the size of little suitcases. Lol those didn’t have any batteries you had to plug it in to the car . Those were just the ones I picked up between 2003-2007.
