My question is where does this go from here? For so long the iPad has basically been just a giant iPhone (more iPod touch). With PadOS we finally saw the iPad branch into its own thing but still for the most part, its very similar to iOS. Mouse support opens a lot of options so it will be interesting to see where Apple takes this...

For me, I'm hoping the iPad will more and more become an assistant to the Mac. I'd like to see an Apple branded built in remote desktop solution for being able to use my Mac from my iPad from ANY location with low latency. The next stage of Sidecar.

I'd also like to see more "Pro" apps ported to the iPad Pro. Lets get an iPad version of Final Cut and Pro Tools. With iCloud files, mouse support and a more powerful version of Pad OS, the iPad could really become much more of a serious machine.

I agree, I think iPadOS 14, and maybe at a stretch 15, will be critical. If they don't have many iPadOS only features then the whole 'branching off' thing will have totally been for nothing. I'm really liking what they have done with the mouse in 13.4 though, its a really positive sign for the future for now at least 🤞

Mixed feelings still. I really hope this won't take away from the touch-first UI. On the other hand, if it means better external monitor support and more devs take the iPad seriously, I'm willing to compromise!

When I heard that Apple is going to release the Magic Keyboard with trackpad feature, I was excited. But the price of that thing, gosh! If I want to the trackpad feature, it might be more economical to just get the Magic Trackpad 2.

True extended display for external monitors would be amazing.

True extended support for external displays with a window manager would be amazing. It should be a strict sort of tiling only window manager, though, but allow you to show and interact with up to four workspaces or something like that, depending on the resolution and options

The price is disappointing. They pushed the envelope right to the “ok fine, I’ll still buy it” point for me. But I still can’t help the feeling of being taken advantage of.
At the same time, Brydge is making their own keyboard+trackpad for $229. If you’re apple, pricing your first party hardware (which looks to be the MUCH superior product) 35% more doesn’t seem like TOO much of a price gouge compared to a third party alternative.
I’d rather pay the extra 35% for the first party Apple magic keyboard that includes power via the Smart Connector vs. battery and Bluetooth, the floating stand, the magnet snap connection to the iPad, etc.

Oh, yes extended display. Unbelievable. No reason why not, unless i'm missing something?
Kind of surprised they didn't already implement it unless they want some low-handing fruit for the iPadOS14 announcement. The iPP will do wider resolutions but only if it is displaying the right content. That made sense until now because there was no way to interact with elements beyond the aspect ratio of the iPad.

Personally, for most tasks, I prefer the UI of the iPad but some tasks need a bigger screen. I think, especially if they support touch for 3rd party external monitors too, this would stave off the (niche) need for larger (15"+) iPPs. It would/should work like Side Car in reverse. The UI for dual full screen apps, or one full-screen app over two screens is already in Mac OS and they share the same underpinnings.

Nah. I'm fine with how it works with full-screen apps on Mac OS already, personally. The limited window manager for iPadOS started as a hardware limitation but I actually really like it from a usability standpoint (for most things). Plus, it keeps the iPad and dedicated Mac hardware working in parallel for another generation or two.

On the mouse side of this functionality - does the Magic Mouse 2 offer any significant advantages over 3rd party options like the Logitech MX Anywhere 2S? The Logitech has the advantage of being readily switchable among 3 devices, a capability I take advantage of with my iPad Pro and docked Win10 laptop.

It works so beautifully that I was asking myself if what I seeing was real, however...

That warning on the Bluetooth page was very real. My iPad Pro 10.5 Couldn’t keep up with a K480 Keyboard + Magic Keyboard + AirDots. The audio stutters upon connection with the Magic Trackpad. That Logitech combo that works with the smart plug must solve the problem.

Besides that, it works absolutely great with gestures and navigation. I really couldn’t believe my yes. This is the start of something great and what will eventually turn the iPad into a full fledged personal computer.

Interesting. Using a different combo of similar devices on 13.3.1 - 2018 12.9 Pro, Logitech Slim Folio Pro Keyboard (or K380 at times) Logitech MX Anywhere 2S mouse, and Sony WF-1000XM3 earbuds - I don't run into any audio stuttering issues. Extra power of the 12.9?

I think to answer this question we need to investigate if the A-Series/or which models have multi display support embedded on the GPU. As far as to this point, the iOS behaves duplicating the main screen, which is easily achieved by copying the buffer on the GPU with almost no performance penalty.

This is, by the way, how the Digital AV Adapter works. The system sends the buffer through the USB lane like it’s an AirPlay device and there’s a SoC inside the adapter to handle the signal conversion to HDMI.

If the A-Series chips are capable of Handling multi display, then there’s this other issue for Apple to solve. They’ll need to revamp the whole Way iOS handles video output to make this work.

This is, like Rene Ritchie always says, Apple paying for poor decisions on the iOS foundations many years ago.

IDK, I’ll run some tests later in different places. Maybe the Apple Pencil was connected as well, I’m not sure right now.

The trackpad/mouse integration is outstanding. Its a major game changer for me. Now the iPad completely shift from a media/mobile game device with light computer task to a laptop replacement with a tablet capability bonus. It works like a charm at a point I just bought another trackpad 2 (Always wanted the space grey one to match with my space grey magic keyboard for my mac so I'll just use my old TP2 with my iPad pro from now on) just for it. The price for the new keyboard with trackpad is just ridiculously too high. The trackpad alongside the smart keyboard folio will easily do the job.

Can't wait to receive my new trackpad to fully enjoy the new iPad experience.

Now, if we could get multi user support....that would be a game changer

Just arrived

Can’t wait to try it out

Good luck, but I doubt it. I'm predicting a form factor change in 2022.
But in reality you have no idea when they’ll change the form factor.
Even if they make the iPad Pro thinner with smaller bezels, they could still work with the magic keyboard.

Apple typically changes the form factor of their mobile devices every several years. 2022 will be 4 years later.

While it's true I'm guessing, it's a reasonable guess. It's wishful thinking to think the Magic Keyboard will will last 2 more or 3 more generations (depending upon what you meant by your post), considering it already supports two generations. That would be a total of 4 or 5 generations, which is unlikely. Hell, the 9.7" Apple Smart Keyboard only lasted a grand total of one generation, and the original 12.9" Apple Smart Keyboard only lasted two generations.
