Mine finally arrived at my door yesterday. Absolutely loving this thing so far. Few software bugs here and there but to be expected as an early adopter of both a new OS and a whole new hardware platform and it's nothing that won't be smoothed out in the future.
Very happy with my purchase, this thing absolutely ***** all over not only my previous 2015 i5 MBP but even a latest gen i9 MBP which costs £2.8k... that is utterly insane!
And the battery life, just wow. I've not experienced such a lack of battery anxiety on any laptop with this much power before. Only my Chromebook has comparable battery life because it has such a weak CPU. The fact this thing is such a performance beast yet I find myself not worrying about plugging it in all day is simply insane.
I'm sure this will shape up to be the best tech purchase I've made in a long time once all the main apps I use upgrade to universal binaries and for full Big Sur support and bugs are ironed out in Big Sur itself.
Did the compulsory Geekbench test and the single core performance of this machine is miles ahead of both my 2015 i5 MBP and 2019 i7 Thinkpad, while the multicore performance just leaves them in the dust.
I am gonna try out some more real life tests like running a Handbrake transcode and see how that compares to my 8th gen i5 NUC. I suspect the MBA will have a rapid initial burst but suffer from throttling with the fanless design. Additionally, Handbrake is still an Intel binary and with it being an open source project no idea how long it'll take to properly be ported over to the M1. But once it is, and it's no longer running under Rosetta 2 and can fully take advantage of the dedicated video processing hardware in the M1 SoC, I think it will seriously fly even with the CPU throttling.
