Which model? I see some 16Gb MBAs are now available again but can't find a store with one.
I picked up a 8gb MBP - not opened yet. There was also 8gb MBA's. I saw no 16gb ram M1's. I wanted to try an 8gb before my 16gb model arrives by delivery (dec 15). If the 8gb works perfectly ill considered cancelling the 16gb and stick with 8gb. A bit of hassle but I got to check for myself if I can live with 8g for long term.

I'd do something similar but i) I returned my 16" back in Jan and feel it would be taking the mick to return a second successive device, ii) I really want 16Gb to give myself headroom and hope Parallels or Fusion or something else will run Win 10 soon.

JL have lots of 8Gb on a 24hr turnaround - I just wish I could locate a 16Gb in an Apple store.

I purchased a i5 / 8Gb/ 256 in April, did the heat sink shim and pad mod and have been really happy with the machine. My wife has a 2014 MBA which she is very happy with. I lent my Air to our daughter who is getting by with a Cromebook, she needed something beefier as she had a Zoom interview for a teaching post and that involved doing an online presentation. Happy to say the interview went well and she was offered the job.
I asked how she got on with the MacBook Air, it’s the first time she’s used one but found it quite intuitive and of course leagues ahead of her Chromebook.
Today I ordered a new MacBook Air M1 base configuration. My Intel Air will go to my wife, my wife’s Air will go to our daughter, and I will have the M1 air.
Delivery is quoted as 4-11th December

I wouldn't worry about returning devices. You are trying to find what works for you. On some level apple understands this and their returns policy is 2 weeks as long as its in perfect condition, or Jan 8 2021 if you get it now.

I wish I didn't have to check whether 8gb to 16gb is enough ram for me but with this major chip change its worth finding out to save money. I do no professional work so I think could get away with a 8gb MBA or 8gb MBP (for 2h extra battery..).

After just a 2-3h with the MBP 8gb / 512gb M1 it looks like it will be more than fine for my usage. Its fast and I get no lag and no fans and no heat... and the keyboard is nice - all doing my usual stuff. Still early for a final verdict but it lives up to expectations so far. Doesn't get over 40 degrees so far, currently 31 degrees just writing this post and 48% battery with 9h usage time left (this probably will calibrate lower over the course of a couple of weeks consistent usage).

My 2018 MBP 15" 16Gb / 512gb runs warm/hot very almost all of the time (fans on way too much), and the battery life is probably 5h depending on what I'm doing - but anything seems to heat it up (60-78 degrees range a lot). Maybe a clean install etc might improve things but the battery life on the M1 looks miles better.

Also, fwiw, I brought the crappy 2018 MBP with a butterfly keyboard that they should have recalled / refunded - it has a confirmed wide spread problem - they knew full well it had. I have the inconvenience of having to get my MBP keyboard fixed before I sell it... returning a £2.5k laptop with a keyboard design flaw is not acceptable. I only buy Apple.... but they kinda owe me.

.... I'm seriously thinking to cancel my MBP 16gb/512gb and order the 7 core / 8gb / 512 M1 MBA. I would save me a good £300-500 compared to Pro equivalents. Ill give it a 1-2 more days. Ill also probably switch to a 14-15-16" M1/2 in a year or two because I much prefer a bigger screen - but 13" is ok until then.

Its just a question of whether I want to buy 16bg ram* incase* I need it... seems like 8gb will be fine atm....

Sorry, started rambling.

Looked like we are

Looks like we are the same batch, money taken last night, and keep checking apple for progress update, nothing happens. And now the Apple online store is down.
Same. Ordered 20th with 8-15th window. No money taken and still processing. Assuming there will be no movement for at least a week?

And to rub salt on the wound, new Black Friday deal means despite being laptopless, we’ve missed out on a £120 gift card ? Has anyone enquired to see if it can be applied to existing, but unfulfilled orders?

Are there are 16GB ram models available 'in stores' anywhere, or are they strictly build to order?

Yes the Apple Stores do stock the 16GB Model (Air and Pro), however they are only available with 1TB SSD. I ordered mine at 6am on launch day and picked it up at 10 am from the Apple Store Bath. MacBook Air 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD.

Keep checking stock early in the morning and hopefully you will find one.

I am also interested in that. I guess this thread speaks only about UK, but are in the UK atm stores open? In my country all shops are closed.

I sold mine on eBay but be prepared for the fees. You can check how much you'd get after fees here: https://finalfeecalc.co.uk (provided you know the selling price. I did a Buy It Now).

Only used eBay twice and it's fairly good for getting a good price, but I despise the way either eBay or PayPal "hold" your funds hostage for a while, the opaqueness in contacting them and the fees are quite steep.

Me neither! But the lack of ability to do my web coding on it, plus the lack of meaningful multitasking improvements and irritating implementation of Widgets compared to iPhone, caused me to do so.

Will consider an iPad Pro again in the future.

Try waiting until they have a £1 fee weekend.

In the UK you can order online and collect from a store. They hand it to you outside the store and you can't buy anything at the store itself, pickup only.

(The Cardiff store is open for shopping and support by appointment, to my knowledge)

Been using my MBP 16/500 for two days in work now. I literally sit in Safari/Chrome/Thunderbird/Skype/Excel all day. In this workload I'm burning through 60% of the battery in 4 hours. Thunderbird appears to be main culprit, it's sh*te I know but stuck with it. Still its an awesome machine.

Interesting. Which customer would be interested in that, against a free delivery directly home?

Someone who wants to collect on their way somewhere rather than waiting in or someone who wants one now, you can order online and collect today on some models.

So getting the order instore is faster than getting them directly home?
