In my area we sometimes get Lake Affect snow during wet years so we had snow sense November so I want it colder and dryer! Update NYS weather can be called psychotic!
Earlier today it was a pleasant 50 degrees, albeit overcast and cloudy, but now the temperature is starting to drop and we're supposed to have very gusty winds later this afternoon, which will clear out the clouds and stop the rain we had been having the last couple of days. March is coming in like a lion, as the saying goes....
Central valley here, we can sure use the rain though, right? Wildflowers aren't popping up as full as they normally do and the hills are still brown.Going to be cold here in California next week - highs in the upper 50s and lows in the upper 30s. For where I am that's really cold (San Bernardino County next to Riverside). 30-40% chance of rain for most of next week. Woo hoo!
Yah this season has been snowier down here in the western Catskills than last winter and some of it's actually from lake effect off Ontario, when the usual west-to-east winds up there shift to come more from northwest combined with moisture pickup over Cayuga lake en route downstate. We've been getting that sneaky Catskills snow that is forecast over and over as "approximately one inch" -- in the morning, afternoon, evening... lol so it's half a foot every couple days punctuated by snow squalls that dump three inches in an hour and bring out the plows. We also had near flood conditions back in December after that nor'easter was followed by a warm spell and rain.
In retrospect I think I enjoyed the 2019-20 winter more... it was really cold sometimes but no off-season worries about flooding from too rapidly melting snowdumps. Plus my snowplowing budget stayed in the black by hundreds of bucks last year since I only had the driveways plowed once! Not the case this winter... and right now another huge snowpack is coming off fairly slowly, thanks to some recently warm and breezy days (mid-30s ºF) but sub-freezing nights. I worry though about another nor'easter later in the season: the water table may already be pretty high around here and will be testing our cellars later on when the ground thaws.
Just had the last (maybe) below-zero overnight... forecast was for 7ºF but altitude and being at the top of one hill and halfway down another one always means subtracting eight to twelve degrees on a clear night. Woke up to -4ºF and almost went back to bed when I noticed that out the kitchen window while filling the kettle for coffee. I like winter after the return of strong sunlight in early January, but by time mid-March rolls around, I'm ready to slog through mud season (April) and get on with real spring here (May, June). Of course that means I'm always surprised when March turns out not to be done with us early in the month. "To be continued...." and meanwhile I await discovery of which perennials did or didn't make it through the winter... always fun anticipating a trip to local plant nurseries later on. 🥰
We can never say that until June. I recall a huge snowstorm late May back in 1982.
