Just ordered: Base model 16" MacBook Pro M1 Pro/16GB Unified Memory/512GB SSD. Gonna be perfect to write my dissertation on and to watch Netflix and movies on - the perfect Mac for a student?! Went for the silver this year as the finish appears to look like the traditional silver MacBook Pro's which I always loved the look of! Seems the delivery date slipped slightly (27th Oct onwards) but I'm still hopeful for a launch day delivery as Apple are usually on top of things!

Unless you absolutely 100% need the 16" screen, it seems massively overkill for your use case (and for 99.9% of students).

The Air would be a much more suitable machine - you could even get a fairly decent external monitor and still have plenty of £££ left over from the price of the 16"

But hey, life would probably be no fun if we only ever bought what we NEED, so assuming the expenditure isn't interfering with the rest of your life, enjoy your MBP

Can’t wait for the anandtech deep dive on these!

Please apple dont let ‘hair flicker’ have a review device!!
Haha! Tbf these reviews are a bit forced imo, I can almost guarantee that everyone will say it’s the best mac ever, it’s powerful as hell and you should buy it. They aim it towards the “Pros” and not towards the average consumer.

I’ve tried to do videos that are essentially the complete opposite of them and look at whether it’s useful for normal people who use it for work, uni, films etc.

Changed my own order.

Originally ordered the 16" M1 Max with 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD. Because I was a bit slow, my delivery date was the 8th November. On reflection, that model is 0.7lb more than my current Late 2016 15" and I've wanted a smaller, lighter, laptop for some time.

So I've gone all out now. 14" M1 Max with 64GB RAM and 2TB SSD. For the eye-watering cost, I hope to God I can get 5-7 years out of it!

I do music and video production so there are definitely times I can use the extra horsepower but really, I'm just looking forward to playing Cities Skylines at a decent resolution without lag!

I don't doubt that on paper its overkill but the 16" makes for a welcome increase in screen space for doing work on and replaces the need for a monitor + keyboard/mouse set up.

I did the AR comparison at 100% size against my 2012 MBP-R 15.4” which I’ve been using for 9 years.

Size against the 16” is identical which is a good thing! But I suspect it will be heavier. Wasn’t able to find a 14” AR version.

What do you guys think?

Hi folks, I’m a day late to the pre-order party, work is relentless this week.

Went leftfield with my MBP order, I got my mate in New York to order me:

16 inch M1 Max, 32GB, 1TB storage

Tricky to work out all options available!
I’ve still got my time machine and external drives for storage so hoping 1TB is fine.

Saved a few pennies on the £/$ conversion and just stayed within my budget! Just need a UK power adapter.

Absolutely no idea when it’s arriving! Mate will bring it over to Blighty when he receives it, hopefully in 1 piece! ?

Congrats - Was in a similar boat and only ordered this morning. Went for the same spec as you but at the UK price which feels very EXP! Delivery estimated between 11-17 November.

I am actually very content with my purchase decision, got the shared basket links from the education store last night but didn't order straight away. Gave myself some thinking time and ordered today.

I'm coming from a 2020 MBP 13 i5 16GB/1TB - my main annoyances being dongles and having to give the computer 10 minutes to process and render a bunch of raw files before I can start editing them in Photos.

I have gone for the 14 inch base 8/14/16 M1 Pro with 16GB RAM and bumped to a 1TB SSD. With education pricing that has cost me £1888.80 which is only £88 more than I paid for my current MBP so fairly happy with that. Realistically I will use it as long as it keeps doing what I need it to do. I won't outgrow the SSD, my RAW libraries normally make it to about 750GB by the end of the year and then get moved to an archive drive ready to start fresh.

Side note - didn't go for the fast charger, don't see the point of that on a MacBook, I have a good charging routine

Honest opinion… Is it worth getting AppleCare with these MacBooks?

I didn’t bother with my 2015 15” MBP and never had any issues which is why I didn’t bother adding it when I purchased my 16” MBP yesterday but not sure whether this was a mistake.

(AFAIK there’s a 60 day period to buy it after it gets delivered)

Interested in your charging routine as I’m not convinced on the merits of fast charging either. I‘m currently favouring the same entry level spec with 1TB SSD and the 67w charger for portability seems a reasonable option to me. I have a 97w (or might be 96w) power adapter with my current MBP 16” and it’s pretty hefty.

I would say so, even less that can be repaired in these devices now and chances are only Apple will be able to repair them. Without AC you are at their mercy on repair pricing if something goes wrong in the 1st 3 years at least.
