Looking to get a 14" with M1Max and over here, it comes with the 96W charger. But I'm wondering if a hub or monitor with 60W PD would be sufficient to charge it when I'm not stressing it? I won't be using the GPU a lot anyway...

My next purchase is a monitor - looking at the Philips 279P1: 27" 4K 90W power delivery over USB-C and build in ethernet.

Ordered 16" M1 Pro, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD

Really hoping for the 29-31st October as then go away for a week on 1st Nov
I'm the opposite - I get back from my holiday on the 29th, so hoping mine is later in the window!
FYI, I messaged Apple Support, asking if it is possible to add the 96W fast charger to my order for £29.

They were able to do it.

EDIT: apparently not. Replied that there is already one in the box lol

Really? I tried to do the same and despite spending 40 minutes speaking to 3 different customer service reps they said it was not possible except by cancelling my order and placing another (with a longer delivery time frame).

They were obviously doing their best to accommodate me but were unable to find a way to add it to my order (other than paying full price).
I also tried to get my order swapped to the 96W power supply, but was told all they could offer me was to cancel my order and start again at the back of the queue. I'll live with 67W.
Apologies if already posted, but for those looking to trade in their old laptops, music magpie has a 10% extra code (up to £50) with MACOFFER
Ooooh. I wonder if I can retry, as I already have a price locked in without any codes...
Honest opinion… Is it worth getting AppleCare with these MacBooks?

I didn’t bother with my 2015 15” MBP and never had any issues which is why I didn’t bother adding it when I purchased my 16” MBP yesterday but not sure whether this was a mistake.

(AFAIK there’s a 60 day period to buy it after it gets delivered)
I've gone for Apple Care, as it is going to be my only Mac, and will be moved around the house etc.

Interested in your charging routine as I’m not convinced on the merits of fast charging either. I‘m currently favouring the same entry level spec with 1TB SSD and the 67w charger for portability seems a reasonable option to me. I have a 97w (or might be 96w) power adapter with my current MBP 16” and it’s pretty hefty.
I might have oversold my charging routine ? It’s nothing fancy or technical in terms of battery longevity but basically make sure I’m organised so every time I take it off my desk it’s 100% and of course make sure I put it back on charge on my desk when I’m done.

Any idea what the recommended resolution is for a retina “like” experience on a 32-35” ultra wide monitor?

At the moment I have a 4K 27” LG screen but am looking for more space!

Purchased a 14" Silver M1 Pro 10/16 Core with 32GB Ram upgrade and 1TB SSD. I was going to upgrade to the 24 Core MAX but decided my money was better spent on Apple Care plus! :D

Unfortunately I need to wait until Nov 8th - 11th *Sighs*

For work, am getting the 14" 10-core Pro, 1TB SSD and 16GB RAM. My current machine - a 2016 Touchbar 13" MBP - has served me well, but I waited 1.75+ years on top of our typical 3-year upgrade cycle (then COVID hit and budgets tanked), but it's time!

I felt the Max was more than I needed (I rarely process video), and my current machine would be fine if I just did a software reinstall, replaced the battery, replaced the keyboard, replaced the display, and maybe the logic board (to be on the safe side). Oh, and the glitchy touchbar which ALWAYS freezes when I go to change my volume, brightness, or expand, sigh, replace that too.

Besides Docker VMs, most of my code editing is in a text editor so I rarely need massive amounts of RAM or even fast bus speed, and am certain the Pro will be good for three years. I was going to get the base model but budget allowed for a tier up.

What resolution do you work on currently? On my 27" at home, I use 2560x1440 because that's what the monitor is capable of. On my 27" at work, which is 4K, my current 16" switches to 3008xsomething resolution. While I find it a bit squinty for things that aren't resizeable, it's great for things that are, like browsing or MS Office.

Should I get that 32", I'd love to try it in Logic in full 4K resolution, and somewhere between 4K and 2560 for regular use.

Now, I checked for 32"+ screens with a higher resolution than 4K and I only find the Dell 8K (31.5", €3500) or the Apple XDR screens. So I would dare to suggest the recommended resolution is 4K for lack of alternative.

I'm on a 4K 27" scaled, which looks like 3008x1692.

3440x1440 looks common on 34" ultrawides retailing for £500 - £700.

3840 x 1600 looks to be the next step-up on those which are £1000+ so I'm guessing this is the resolution I need on an ultra wide to look comparable to what I'm used-to on a normal 27".

If you're going ultrawide, there are some options at 5120x2160 as well. LG and MSI have a 34" version, both around €1000 over here. It would give you a nice step up in resolution.

Couple of questions I’m struggling to find answers on…

Does anybody know of a monitor, 24” or bigger, minimum 4K, that natively supports daisy-chaining? I’d love a single-cable solution at my desk without the need for an extra dock. I’ve only been able to find a couple of Thunderbolt monitors and they appear to be discontinued.

Secondly, if I’m forced down the dock route, does anybody know of a dock that would support two 4K monitors, has 10Gb Ethernet and also runs silently? The ones I’ve found all have fans. It’s quite probable such a product simply doesn’t exist at the moment due to, well, physics. :)

At 32" you basically want 6K or better for retina. Your options are realistically the Dell 8K or the XDR 6K. Neither of which is cheap. Its really frustrating how few monitors there are in this bracket. 4K at 27" isn't great. I have 2 of the 21.5" 4K LGs they released at the same time as the new MBPs in 2016 I think it was and they were amazing. Unfortunately they have a host of issues and the image retention on them now is horrible.

I am tempted by the 6K XDR but damn, £5500 for a monitor stings.

Agonised over 512 vs 1TB for ages so only ordered last night and 14" delivery is estimated 19-26 November... still, very excited to be upgrading at all from a mid-2012 non-retina 15 inch (which I got off eBay for £600 five years ago). The i7 has served me well and to be honest, if one of the RAM slots wasn't broken and it could take 16GB, it'd probably be a pretty fine machine for most things still -- I'll be very fond of it.

Spent more than I was intending to on this but decided the amazingly bright, 120hz screen, M1 Pro, MagSafe + SD card slot, slightly bigger display, better camera, speakers, etc. were worth the extra £500 over an M1 Air. I hope to keep it for at least 5 years, so not getting the 1TB SSD seemed rather risky, though it did nudge the price much closer to the £2k mark than I like. But I'll be using it every day for work, and a good amount of photo and video editing outside of work, and hopefully it will last me a very long time. Just genuinely a bit unsure how I'll feel carrying a £1900 machine on my back when out and about -- no pressure eh!

Not sure about monitors sorry but I’ve been looking into docks. Have decided that given magsafe is back I might as well rely on that for power. This opens up a wide selection of simple (and much cheaper) bus powered docks. Hoping to find the perfect one that I can velcro up out of sight behind one of my monitors. I only need it to have a couple of displayport/hdmi and a single usb for my time machine.

It’s not the dream single cable solution, but I can live with two cables. Yet to find the right dock though.

Aye, I have quite a decent, but not perfect, setup at the moment. A USB-C monitor with built-in USB ports which I use for a couple of dongles. Unfortunately it's not Thunderbolt, so no daisy-chaining to a second monitor. And the USB ports are only USB 2.0 (which is fine for my dongles and webcam.) Finally, I'd like a 10Gb/s wired network connection for directly editing videos on the NAS in my network closet.

I think wanting a single cable to connect all of that up probably just isn't possible at the moment.

If you get something like the Plugable or OWC TB4 hubs, I think you should get close. 1 TB4 to the mac, 3 out on the other side. So you can connect 2 screens and your TB/USB 10GbE. Or 1 TB screen, daisy chain the other, then use the free port for a regular USB hub. I'm considering this myself for a one-cable-only connection between my mac and everything else (screen, mouse, keyboard, audio interface, synth, ...)
