I placed my order late afternoon on the 14th and the anticipation set in immediately and various searches to glean information led me to the macrumors website and forums. I've enjoyed reading the global/us order thread but was pleased to find this UK thread to give me some perspective from a local point of view. Thanks OP!

I'm moving from a mid-2011 (but purchased late in the model's lifecycle in August of 2012), 27" i5 2.7GHz 4GB (immediately upgraded to 12GB using Crucial), AMD Radeon 6770M 512MB and this has been passed onto my eldest daughter who has recently started college and is studying, among other things, Photography and ICT. She lives away from me with her Mum otherwise we would have shared the new iMac, but she's with me regularly and will get her mitts on the retina very soon.

My new order was for:-

• 4.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.2GHz
• 16GB 1867MHz DDR3 SDRAM - two 8GB
• 1TB Flash Storage
• AMD Radeon R9 M395X with 4GB video memory
• Magic Mouse 2
• Magic Keyboard (British) & User’s Guide (English)
• Accessory Kit

It is complete overkill for what I will use it for at the moment but I hope to find the time to learn more and use it for photo and video work, albeit from a hobbyist's perspective. I'm not wealthy but I don't spend much money on myself on other things, but I knew that buying under the spec that I wanted would cause worse buyer remorse that the type I might experience for spending, perhaps, too much money. In any case, I will keep it for as long as it lasts and depending on how her educational career progresses, I hope my daughter will be the "power user" of the family and that we will get quite some longevity from the machine.

In any case, my estimated delivery date was 21-23rd. It stayed at processing and preparing for dispatch for some time but then things moved on very quickly and it arrive at my door at just before 9.00 this morning.

Did the set up this evening and without having done any real work am delighted with the display and the instant responsiveness of the system.

For those still waiting, I hope you all receive and enjoy your new iMacs very soon and look forward to reading about your experiences and opinions of them.

All the best,
Rich

It's fast!

Mine is due tomorrow and is currently in Dublin according to UPS.

I was hoping to get 64Gb of RAM but that looks hard to find and would probably be ridiculously expensive judging from the OWC prices in the US, so I have stuck with 32Gb (£132 from Amazon) and will upgrade to 48Gb or maybe 64Gb if the modules become available and reasonably priced.

Which RAM did you go with from Amazon to upgrade?

I went for the Kingston HyperX Impact:

There were only 3 left when I ordered so I expected it to say there was just one remaining, but there are 5 now for some reason.

It seemed the right spec, and pretty fast, being CL11 at 1866MHz. If it's the wrong type then please let me know!

Thanks for that. I am trying to decide myself which to go for? Surprised by the lack of information and enthusiasm from the various RAM manufacturers? Time will tell.

Hello all

Glad to say I have just ordered the iMac 5k - 3.2 i5, 256 flash, 8gb ram, m390. This will be my first Mac and I'm super excited. I have been using dell Xps 8300 desktop pc which has i7 3.4 quad 2600 sandy bridge, 6gb ram, 1 gb AMD Radeon 6600?(rubbish) I think and I added 64gb ssd cache to its 1.35tb 7200rpm hd. It's pretty good but just had enough of Windows. Looking forward to OSX

do you think this iMac will be faster than my current setup? I was not sure about i5 but I can't afford the i7 and 4gb m395x. I have mostly used my pc for basic things like web browsing, YouTube, music, movies, some fl studio music making and the odd game like sim city. I will not be playing 3D graphic intensive games on the iMac. Do you think I should get i7 and/or 4gb video memory.?

Ordered mine on the 17th October at night. Just moved into Preparing for dispatch. Delivery estimate still 23 Oct - 27 Oct by Standard Shipping. Hoping it arrives on Friday, otherwise its going to be a long weekend. :)

Just arrived!

But it turns out that if you add on the Magic Trackpad 2, you don't get an extra lightning cable with it, even though you pay the full price!

Tight ba***rds!

Will have a moan at Apple Support. I'm always running out of lightning cables and they're £15!

My external hard drives arrived today. Just shifting stuff from current mac onto them. New iMac arrives tomorrow :)

I do not believe I would personally benefit from a desktop, but as far as I can see the 2TB Fusion drive or the 512GB Flash storage are the best options for the majority of people. Fingers crossed for skyline and redesigned Pros this year though... All the best to those who have received theirs, out of curiosity I hope to know which SSD has the fastest read and write speeds as this can vary year on year.

It took an hour on the phone, but they put it right in the end. Sending me another lightning cable.

I know I might get some abuse on here for kicking up a stink about this, but to clarify:
  • I paid the full price for Magic Trackpad 2 to be added on
  • They still only send you the single lightning cable as comes with all the new iMacs
Now to put the beast through its paces! :D

Did you check what the RAM supplied with your machine was? Did you get Hynix?

I'll have a look when the machine arrives tomorrow and I swap in the new modules.

I just looked for the cheapest PC14900 8Gb SODIMM modules that did CL11 at 1866MHz. There were more expensive ones available that ran faster (4 x 2133MHz CL11 modules for £166) but I stayed cheap as I didn't know if they would make any difference, and because I plan to upgrade to 64Gb when the 16Gb modules are available and reasonably priced.

Depressing seeing all the orders placed after mine shipping already. My order from 7pm on the 14th has still not shipped :-(

I wonder if its related to selecting the US keyboard layout instead of the UK one?

The standalone US keyboard doesn't ship any slower on the UK site so I don't see why that would be holding it up.

What was the spec again?

27" 5k

• 4.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.2GHz

• Magic Trackpad 2
• Magic Keyboard (US) & User’s Guide (English)
• Accessory Kit

near enough full spec, just the 16gb ram and 512gb ssd are not.

And it's still on processing?

I ordered a 4.0/8GB/3TB/M395X/Mouse+Trackpad on the 13th, it despatched over the weekend and arrived today.

I doubt the alternative accessory options are causing the delay as I changed mine too.

Maybe the flat is holding it up? But I'm pretty sure someone on here with a 256GB SSD had theirs delivered.

A call to Apple is definitely in order!

Tomorrow is technically day 6 of the 4-6 business days. So if it's not shipped by noon I'll call them up and see what's going on.
