There is a EE 5G tower recently gone up near where i work as of yet it's still not switched on and it been up a good few weeks now.

I wonder if EE has something planned for when the iPhone 12 launches, so all the towers that have recently been installed get switched on the same day you can buy the iPhone 12.

Was pumped for the Pro Max but with all these leaks, I'm seriously considering extending the life of my XS Max 1 more year!

Never had a phone for 3 years!

I used to love upgrading every year, but since the XS Max I'm really not bothered about "keeping up with the latest and greatest"

WHO AM I!

You’re at iPhone preorder level 3... it’s the ‘meh I don’t see anything I need over my current phone. Tuesday evening you’ll be teetering on level 4 and then by Thursday evening you’ll be level 5 - take my money.

Zero 5G coverage in my area of London so 5G isn’t a seller for me, these phones need to have something good.

UK networks are a disgrace regarding coverage in this country but if the EE announcement next week is about 5G being everywhere I’d have to swap over to then from O2.

Can’t see me commuting work work for a good 6-8 months still so the need of 5g is irrelevant for me. Got my 1gb fibre at home so all good there tbh EE 4g speeds were hitting 130mb where I live so I’ve never felt myself thinking things are slow

They would have had them up and running and tested well in advance. Can’t imagine they’d leave it to release day to switch it on! Then again I worked for BT for 13 years so I know how they plan things too

I can’t tell the difference on my iPhone 11 vs iPad Pro 12.9 so I don’t care about 120Hz

also this is a new design - people used to get excited about that with the performance bump being the year after.

Anyone else thinking of going to contract instead of buying out right this year? Just trying to figure out my best options... 🤔 (currently paying £58 to Currys for my handset which I will pay off completely before a new phone and £15 on a Sim only deal)

I'm thinking of going the other way. My XS Max was on O2 contract (I paid it off a couple of months ago) and this year I'm thinking of paying outright. I like the idea of a £15/mth sim only deal and not having a handset cost.

I suppose it’s the not being tided in that is the most appealing... just very different financial situations this year for all 😅

I would never go back to any network for a phone being tied to a 2 year contract

This.

The prices you pay are outrageous, a stupid amount up front for the handset if you want the latest and then a stupid amount (£50/60+) a month which you're then tied In to for 2 years. want the new phone after 12 months? pay off the rest of that expensive contract and then pay for yet another new one...

Once you manage to buy a phone outright, and get yourself a £15 a month sim only you're sorted.

Granted, the first time buying out right is the killer, as its probably going to be about £1000.. however you can trade this in every year for around £600, and then buy a new phone every year for about £400? these are ballpark figures.

However it gives you 12 months to put a little aside each month or so for something you know you're going to be buying come October time.;)

I guess, and I do usually do that however I can get 20% discount on contracts with o2 so I am thinking about it being an option for me

However I don’t want 2 years 😅 so actually yeah scrap that. I’ll carry on doing what I do and buy outright
It depends on everyone's financial situation at the end of the day.

but for example ive just gone onto the o2 website and looked at the very first iPhone 11 Pro contract they offer.

£30 up front and then £65 a month for 36 months...
that's £2370 for a contract you're tied into for 3 years.... by which point there's been a further 2 new iPhones out.

Alternately you have the phone unlocked outright for £1000 and have a £15 month 12 month contract.
Total cost, £1180 and then you can sell the phone and are on a rolling sim free contract after the 12 months.

even with your 20% its crazy mad for anyone to go for that, they get people taking these contracts out knowing that people just desperately want the newest phone on launch day.. Don't fall into the trap!

That’s not true. Three will be using 100MHz spectrum for 5G
I had bad experience with Three on coverage area until I stop the contract with them and jump ship.

if 700MHz is in pipeline for UK be it Vodafone or EE and 12 series does not support that, I may need to sit out this year as 5G will never fully utilised in future indefinite for iPhone 12. We just need to wait 2 more sleeps to find out.

Well Qualcomm 5G X50 doesn't support 700Mhz 5G or n28 which was used in alot of 1st gen 5G phones, the X55 does support it though.

If Apple decides cheap out on the 5G side of thing using older 5G tech in the iPhone 12 then it won't support 700Mhz.

Thanks for the clarifications, yeah also I mean I got this phone now on 0% finance with Currys so I’m hoping they do the offer again with the new launch as I already have pre approved credit with them 😅

I guess the other option if you want 0% is the iPhone upgrade programme via Apple themselves.
Pay over 20 months, Apple care included and the option to trade in after a year or keep paying it off.

That’s bad luck for you. I’ve been with Three for 10 years and not once suffered with low/poor signal. Speeds have always been excellent too.

What about contracts with annual upgrade options eg EE anytime upgrade. After 12 months you hand over your phone, upgrade without penalty and start your 24 months again.
I see no difference between this and the Apple upgrade programme

I don’t get the love for the Apple upgrade programme.
Firstly you are obliged to take Apple care , I could buy from John Lewis and get a 2 year Warrenty for free.
Secondly it’s a full blown personal loan application / credit check with Barclays EVERY YEAR. It’s not a case of qualify once and you qualify in perpetuity.
When you add the repayment costs of the AUP to a decent 5G SIM only plan (which is around £25), you’re paying contract prices anyway.

I've only ever done the iUP once. It worked ok and I sold privately at the end of the 1st year then went to O2 contract because the iUP costs, plus a sim only deal were around the same as the contract... But with a friend who works for O2 and got me the friends and family discount so it worked out a good deal.

Does the Join Lewis warranty cover screen replacements for accidental damage etc with a £79 (or whatever it is on Apple Care) payment? I'm intrigued as I'm looking at options for the 12 Pro Max.

I'm just suggesting options, not saying that the iUP is amazing. I know a lot of people get problems being approved.
