Heard some people saying using Apple Pay via the app is a risky thing to do with pre-orders. Anyone able to confirm or refute this?

I’ve seen people say it declines when they try and charge at dispatch, something to do with the gap between authorisation and processing.

Though it is all supposition.

Interesting... I paid with Apple Pay last year and my payment was also declined at dispatch. Was able to rectify without delaying dispatch time, but never understood why

I tried to buy iPad Pro 12.9 inch here in the UK via the Apple Store App and Apple Pay - last month - the transaction got declined everytime. I then phoned the bank, they told me they will not authorise that amount via Apple Pay.

I then went to order it via Apple website - which is what I have always done previously, and the transaction was authorised.

So it's bank / credit card company dependent.

Not worth the risk and the hassle on launch day.

If you buy it upfront and switch to iUP, do you get a refund of the whole amount - deposit? Or do they consider the phone paid off till next year? Do they do a credit check?
I thought you could only apply for iUP in store therefore had to buy the phone in store too?

The limit for Apple Pay in the U.K. is £30 so I would just pay using PayPal or your card to buy the new iPhone

https://www.macrumors.com/2015/09/01/apple-pay-limit-30-gbp-uk/

Not really, I have shopped for more than £30 worth of items (and still do) and had no issues. I am with Santander. I have even ordered food via HungryHouse that cost me over £30 and had no issues.

http://www.santander.co.uk/uk/apple-pay

"Payments can be made up to any value although some retailers may still limit this to £30."

So the limit depends on the retailer.

The limit is NOT £30 - that's the official so called limit.

I have paid £40, £50 even £100 and £500 plus on transactions in various stores including Sainsbury's and too many others to mention.

Like I said, it's bank dependent and maybe retailer dependent too.

Will decide on the day whether to use Apple Pay or my default method which is the old-school card method.

I was thinking, perhaps pre-orders open Friday and the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus ship on the 22nd (a week later), with iPhone X shipping on the 29th (two weeks later) or 6th October (three weeks later).

That will firstly, stagger the hype around phones being delivered, reviews, Apple Store mania and so on; but secondly, allow Apple more time to produce enough of the X to be able to (go some way towards being able to) satisfy launch day demand.

It's anybody's guess at this stage.

I'm a little confused about how people are paying using Apple Pay on the app? I have a credit card saved on the Apple Store app, which I've also recently added to Apple Pay.

Where does the option for Apple Pay come up?

Should show up when you try to check out.

Just been through the process. Best to select the left method just in case?

Yeah. Go with Apple Pay first, scan fingerprint and you should be done. If not, then just use the good old card method to pay.

Make sure all details are up to date and correct - card details, billing and shipping address, etc.

It comes up as an option when you come to choose payment method providing you have a card in your "wallet" registered to Apple Pay.

As stated I’m sure last year people who successfully pre ordered with Apple Pay had trouble with declined transactions when the phone was preparing to ship. IIRC most people were ok once they had got in touch with their bank and got Apple to retry

Correct.

I paid for my 7 Plus using my Apple Watch in the Apple Store.

I thought people on here were saying not to go the Apple Pay route?!

I've not seen the usual pre-orders thread this year, or maybe I'm just uber keen to get the monster thread started so let me give it a go!

Clearly a lot of the current information is hearsay and rumour, but I'll update this first post as the information comes in. Times and prices etc will be BST and in Pounds (£) respectively.

Please consider checking the FAQ section at the bottom of this thread before asking a question. I’ll keep it updated with the most popular questions, so that the answers are quick and easy to find.

You can use this thread to discuss the UK price points, pre-orders and dispatch of the new iPhones, unlocked from Apple and through UK network carriers.

Please post to let everyone know if you were able to get your pre-order through to Apple, and if you had any problems. Let us know when your online order status changes - e.g. Order Processing, Preparing for Shipment, Dispatched and eventually Delivered. Last year it was useful for people to update their signatures to display their current status to avoid the endless posts asking for 'whats your status?'

Feel free to discuss cases and accessories too!

FAQ

When is the Keynote?
Apple sent out media invites for its annual iPhone-centric event that will be held on Tuesday, September 12 at 18:00(BST) @ the Steve Jobs Theater at the company's new Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California.

Where can I watch the Keynote?
The Keynote can be streamed online here on apple.com.

Where can I watch a replay of the keynote?
There is a spoiler free thread on macrumors which also links to the video replay here

What time do pre-orders start?
Pre-orders will start on Friday, September 15 at 08:00(BST) - (TBC)

When is the official launch?

The new devices will most likely see an official launch on Friday, September 22, with pre-order shipments going out to customers and in-store stock available - (TBC).

**Update 7/9/1**
News suggest stock of the 8/X/Edition will be constrained until October or later

Should I pre-order from the desktop store, or mobile app?
Historically the app is has been more stable when pre-orders first start, compared to the desktop store.

Can I reserve for collection in store?
With previous launches there has ben an option to reserve for in-store pickup. After the official release day there has also been an option to check stock at individual stores and reserve.

How do I know if stores have certain stock available?
last year @l3uddz had a great little php application that integrated with PushBullet and sent push notifications when certain stock was available. I'll update here if it gets working again this time around.

Further details to be added.

Will my order be delivered on the 22nd of September (TBC)?
This will all depend on any stock constraints. If you are lucky to get in a pre-order and the estimated delivery shows the 22nd, then you will get your phone on that day. If the shipping dates start to push out then you will have to unfortunately wait. Apple's estimated delivery dates are pretty accurate but they have had recent history in bringing forward some orders which has missed the initial launch day release

Is there a limit to how many iPhones I can order?
Apple typically imposes a limit of ordering 2 iPhones per Apple ID.

Will my order be delayed if I order a case/Apple Care with the iPhone?
In the past, people have experienced delays in receiving their orders if they order any accessories along with the phone. It is recommended that you order the iPhone separate to any accessories to avoid the potential delay.

Once I pre-ordered, Apple placed a hold on the funds in my account but released it a few days later without taking the money. Is there something wrong with my order?
When you pre-order from Apple and pay by credit or debit card, Apple will at some point place a ‘hold’ on the amount with your card company. This checks you've got the funds, and stops you spending them. However, a hold only lasts a few days, after which time your card company will automatically make the funds available to you to spend again. When you see this happen, it is nothing to worry about, it DOES NOT mean Apple has cancelled your order. Apple will not take the money out of your account until the day of shipping.

What courier will my order be delivered by?
On past releases, people who have been lucky enough to snag a launch day pre-order are likely to have their orders shipped from Syncreon in Hinkley. These deliveries and then usually handled by UK Mail and UPS.
Orders which have missed the launch date typically come direct from factory via UPS.

My order has been shipped with UPS, how can I track it?
On your order page there will be a tracking number starting with ‘1Z’, simply copy and paste it into the tracking box on the UPS website and it should display your tracking results. Please note that tracking numbers may take some time to become active.

My order has been shipped with UK Mail, how can I track it?
If your tracking number starts with '309', enter it into the UK Mail Tracking Page. Entering your post code is not required, however if you do enter it then you'll be able to change your delivery date or select to pick your order up at your nearest depot. If your tracking number doesn't start with '309', select the 'Customer reference' option and then enter your tracking details along with your post code. UK Mail should text you with a one hour delivery window, and you can view delivery progress online.

My order has been shipped with Syncreon, how can I track it?
Enter your 'Delivery Number' in the 'Order No/Delivery No' box on the Syncreon tracking page, and your Apple order number (starts with W) in the ‘’Web Order No’’ box. If your tracking number starts with '309' you will then be able to track it to delivery on the UK Mail Tracking Page. Please note that tracking numbers may take some time to become active.
