If you do buy iPhone from John Lewis, as I have done many times, consider having a spare iphone in months 12 to 24.

They took 4 weeks to repair our 18 month old phone 6S and provided a £15 'loaner'. [this was with a written diagnostics from apple store saying 'item needs replacing', and 'find my iphone' OFF].

Interesting information, thanks. It rather puts their extra year of warranty into perspective. Four weeks with a £15 loaner phone sounds like an absolute nightmare!

We won’t get this because in the Us, customers on the IUP can upgrade online and have their new iPhone mailed to them and send the old one back therefore the credit check is done online. In the UK, we have to reserve from the store stock and then go in to collect and it’s at that point the credit check is done.

I spoke to Apple and Barclays a couple of weeks ago who both told me existing IUP members don't have to do a credit check, it's only new sign ups.

I really doubt that can be the case. You’ll be applying for what is in essence a new loan again the new value of the device. No one will just hand over a £1000 phone without checking you’re credit worthy.

You can also see from the new that US IUP users can get a ‘head start’ with their upgrade by completing the credit check early.

Apple's own website says you'll be credit checked again in the FAQ.

Is there another credit check when I upgrade my iPhone?
Yes, as part of enrolling in a new programme for your new iPhone you will be required to have a credit check when you upgrade at an Apple Store.

But it does say at an Apple Store specifically which tells me you have to go to the store to do it, can't upgrade iUP online. Soon find out I guess.

You DOUBT? And you're an expert on the subject are you? I'm not, that's why I ASKED. They were very clear. If you're already on the iUP then you won't need to do another credit check. So why don't you ASK too??!

Calm down dear.

As per the following comments, faqs and common sense. I BELIEVE you were mislead

No need to be rude.

I’d be very surprised if you didn’t need a new credit check, it’d be like me opening a credit card with my bank, they would still want to credit check me even though they would have done so when I opened my current account. Fact is they’re giving you credit in the form of a phone, I doubt they would do that without checking you first, especially as it would be higher value than last time.

My friend upgraded to the 8 plus from a 7 and his credit report is showing the old account settled and a new one opened along with a new a new credit search. It will take 6 years for the settled credit account to be removed from his file.

Paid £25 at my local Carphone Warehouse, just in case.

Their computer system only let them select new contract or upgrade, not SIM though their website clearly suggests they do sim free. If I can get one at 8am from Apple that’s my preference, but if not then CPW may be a reasonable backup option if they let me go for sim free. Will grab a screenshot of their website just in case.

I assume their contract options will be a lot more expensive than a £17-20 sim only deal. £999 is £41.50 per month over 24 months, so £0 down and £60-65 for 10GB and I might go for a contract..

By both Apple and Barclays independently? They both said the same thing.

Yes, because what IUP is is noting more than an interest free loan. By signing up to IUP you are signing a consumer credit agreement with Barclays (on behalf of Apple). This is for the value of the phone, with £X/month repayments ending on an agreed date when the final payment is made.

An upgrade after 12 months of IUP is Apple taking back the handset and settling the balance of the credit agreement on your behalf. This is why most people would actually be better off selling their phone privately as they are more than likely to get a return which is greater than the outstanding balance.

Regardless, when you then ‘upgrade’ you are starting the above process again. You will apply for credit again for the value of the new phone and Barclays will assess your credit worthiness.

Another example why this is the case is people who took out IUP last year would have been for the price of an iPhone 7. The price of this say for conversations sake was £850. Given the X will cost a minimum of £1200 on IUP there is a difference of £350 which no financial lender will hand over without knowing your credit worthy.

And this is all shown on Apple’s own FAQ as per below:-

So yes, this is how I know

I'd like you to point out exactly where I was rude??

Your shipping time wont slip if they have to retry payment.

Also, even if you inform your bank, a fraud check can still take place. It's automatic and there's no way to bypass it, even if you inform your bank.

I wouldn't recommend going the gift card route unless you're not planning to return the phone, because Apple wont give you cash or transfer the amount to your bank, you'll get a £999/1149 gift card (value of the phone) back, which you can't transfer to your bank.

The checks are done completely by machine learning these days so can only clear the payment after it’s been declined. I tried to do it previously by informing them I had a large payment going through and it was still declined.

Think they told you wrong in that case. You’re essentially taking out another 20 month loan wen you upgrade. It’s one apples T&Cs and on their website.

Don’t feed the troll!

Don’tthink he was trolling (but likes typing in caps), just misinformed.

Can’t say I’m surprised as I’ve dealt with many Apple reps or “geniuses” who know little or nothing about what’s going on or details of their products. Most of us on here could do a better job

Jin is only trying to help you and you replied in a very rude tone. Just read the above and tell me that's a normal tone.

Anyway, roll on next week. It's gonna be a blood bath.

So I've bought the pixel 2 and S8

They're great phones but I've been spoilt by the iPhone 7

Returning both to CPW and will grab an X to try out.

Shame but the pixel is a step sideways with a greater camera over my 7, it doesn't feel like an upgrade maybe if I had a 6/6s it's far better.

The S8 is lag city, is a ****ing shambles compared to the pixel.

Screen is stunning but it's ruined by bloat and lag.

What’s this about paying £25?

So is the IUP done via Barclays as well then? as people have had issues with getting accepted by Barclays

Yes it is done with Barclays
[doublepost=1508602448][/doublepost]Looking into that Carphone Warehouse thing and after tweeting them I ain't filled with confidence. Comes across a bit "We will take your £25 and secure you'll be allocated a phone when we get them"
Good luck if you're doing it, I'd need to speak to someone in store and get a lot more info than what is on their site.

I figure it’s worth a shot. They say I’ll get a call on Friday to order. I doubt they can guarantee any launch day stock but will use words to try and imply that as much as possible. I assume I can get my £25 back so it’s a no risk backup plan.

Yeah it's a good second option for sure but I'm glad you're not banking on it.
