Last year in-store pickup wasn't an option - all in-store stock was allocated using the reservation system. Now in theory, the reservation system is for people who want to join the iPhone Upgrade Programme only. In practice, last year you could reserve for the Programme but then pay in full when you collect. I'm not sure if that will be allowed for the X.

Really? I assumed pickup was just like home delivery, just delivered to the store instead? How will I know in the app if I can choose pickup or need to choose home delivery? Don’t want to waste precious seconds

Not at product launches, because it would be a logistical nightmare.

At product launches, in-store pickups are allocated out of the store's general stock. E.g. store has 1,000 iPhones already heading to it, you will do an in-store pickup and one of those 1,000 is yours. That's what happened for the iPhone 8 this year. But last year, there wasn't enough availability of the 7 to do that - all the store stock went to the Upgrade Programme. If you tried to order, you'd get "in-store pickup is currently unavailable". I would expect it to be the same for the X. Apple has to do this otherwise life would be very hard for Upgrade Programme customers since they can't (yet) order online like the rest of us.

When demand dies down/supply improves, in-store pickup reverts to how you suggested: your order is shipped specifically for you to the store (assuming the store doesn't already have stock).

So I should order for delivery if buying outright for the safest option?

Was thinking to get pickup from Covent Garden but I assume that will be a very popular store (although may mean it gets more stock)

And you can order IUP online - do you mean upgrades rather than new customers? Happy to go IUP rather than pay outright - doesn’t bother me - but IUP seemed slower though the app. Home delivery would mean working from home that day rather than picking up on the way into the office in the morning

Ordering for delivery is definitely the safest and most straightforward option for buying outright. That’s what I’m doing but luckily I work at home so will be here as soon as it turns up.

You can decide when you check out - it will show if it is possible to pick up at Covent Garden. It might be! Though I doubt it.

You can't order the iPhone Upgrade Programme online yet in the UK. You can only reserve an iPhone, go to the store, and apply for it in-store. If you fail the credit check or face another issue you will be walking home empty handed. And that's what I was saying about reservations - for the 7 all in-store stock went to Upgrade Programme reservations. They did allow you to buy outright though, but I'm not sure if that will be allowed this year. It was already a grey area last year with some stores in the States not allowing it.

Personally I think majority of stock will be allocated to people currently on the IUP wanting to upgrade
Yes - and I've actually heard that the back-end of Apple's website is showing that there are two availability streams for upgraders and first timers.

My initial plan was to buy it outright then go back in and reserve one on the IUP (already on it with my 7+) and see which has the better date then cancel the worst one, now I’m not sure if I should do the IUP first.

If true I’d be delighted with this. The app does have a different route for upgrade reservations compared to general ones so I did wonder if this might be a factor. Hope so.

So my new most efficient route sounds like
1 - buy outright for home delivery
2 - see if I can get an IUP reservation for pick up on the day
3 - who knows if Carphone will actually call me on Friday with stock?

Well all, we’ve managed to get through 6 weeks of wait, that’s 40 odd days, nearly 1000 hours of small talk to the main event! Good to see people have stuck it once since page 1 of this thread.. I’ve a feeling this might double in size by Friday!

5 more sleeps!

I’ve got a week off for half term - need to fill my time otherwise I’ll just be F5’ing this page and twiddling my thumbs!

Just sold my Chromebook on ebay (man I hate them fees!) so this means I have the funds to pay for the phone outright if I decide to.

So now just need to decide on the following.

1) Buy the phone outright and stick with Vodafone for a further 12 or so months (cancel my EE sim within 14 days)
2) Buy the iPhone 10 on PayPal finance with a view to paying it off within 6/12 months and buy out Vodafone completely
3) Buy it outright on credit card then pay it off over 6/12 months and also buy out Vodafone completely.

All 3 are around the same cost per month but options 2 and 3 means I am no longer in any form of long term contract.

How many steps in the app for IUP? You scroll down the iPhone list, hit IUP and then select your phone (so a little slower than having a favourite), but is that it - or are there more things to fill in before the reservation is done?

I woudnt’ bother buying out Vodafone unless you are on a terrible plan. Just stick it out for 12 months and then next year take your pick

A bit OT, but I just spotted someone selling a 15-inch rMBP Touch Bar (i7, 256GB, 16GB RAM, Radeon GPU) for £480 on Facebook marketplace! From the photos it looked legit (fully working MBP, box included). The same person is also selling a iPhone 8 Plus 64GB for £400. Again, both these items have photos on the listing and it all looks legit.

The person wants to sell it because he urgently needs some money.

Now, it means I can get a high-end 2016 15-inch rMBP Touch Bar and iPhone 8 Plus 64GB, for less than the price of an iPhone X 64GB!

It seems too good to be true, but who knows. Maybe the person stole it, or maybe it's a scam, or maybe it's 100% legit. I am so tempted, but not sure what to do.

You know the saying...

If he urgently needed the money he could still get £1000 for the MacBook Pro easily. Obviously stolen/broken/something.

Yeah that's what I think, most likely a scam or something. But if it really is true then this one in a lifetime kind of deal. I mean, **** the iPhone X, I'll just get this and replace my 2014 rMBP 13 inch with the beast of a 15 inch rMBP and my 5S with a 8 Plus!

Not sure quite how much time this will save but scroll down to Devices on the account screen and you can check eligibility for your iUp straight from that screen. Saves one click (and therefore one loading screen) so might help matters.

I wouldn’t go near it. Obviously something not legit with it

Only site I will ever trust is gumtree as i meet the person and you can tell what is legit. I lost my apple watch series 2 on ebay by some scammer. I got some fake emails from paypal which was him saying funds were in the account and be sent to my paypal when the item was sent and i sent the item and no money was ever sent and then it said i had to transfer money to the customs in nigeria. So I lost my series 2 for nothing so now I will close my ebay account for good and never use that again. Think i will just sell on comparison sites from now on.

I did sell my ipad pro 12.9 2nd gen for £670 on gumtree that same week so least that worked out

On the Apple Store app every time I go to primary payment my security code is blank and I have to enter the 3 digits every time. Everything else is filled in but the 3 digits. Even when I do I practice run and go to checkout wanting to buy an iPhone 8 I get to confirm and I click on primary payment and my 3 digits are blank (even though "Place Order" was clickable I still went on my card details to check)
