I'm on the iUP with a 7+. My husband's 6 is literally at death's door so we're considering paying my iUP off early so he can have that, and i'll start from scratch again with an X. I wonder whether it's a stupidly risky strategy to order on Friday as an upgrade (using the streamlined link in the app), and then on collection ask to start again instead of upgrading, and settling the outstanding amount with Barclays in the meantime.

Just received an email from Apple about the upgrade programme.

Whats the most everybody is willing to wait? jan?

A while back I said February but not sure I'd wait that long now and a lots depends on the trade in price I get for my 7+. As long as the trade in price doesn't fall below the settlement cost of my Barclays iPhone payments plan I will probably upgrade. Currently about £120 more than the settlement price so definitely worth me upgrading!

Will be disappointed if don't get for launch day but realistic about my chances and prepared to see it slip quickly to 6 weeks for delivery.

Have not yet bought a case because was really wanting to have an X in my hand before I trade in the 7+. If am not in love with the X when it arrives I am quite prepared to hold onto my 7+ til next year since the phone will all be paid up in April allowing me to save towards the next one. However everyone who knows me would bet against that happening

What colour is everyone planning to order?

Black.

I’m thinking the demand will be higher for the white.

I honestly can’t see if you order as close to 8.01 as possible you will be waiting more than 6-8 weeks MAXIMUM. Yes the date will slip but I can’t see it going from 3/11 to February that quickly. When these sites report stock will be in short supply until next year they mean you won’t be able to walk in and buy one.

Did anyone do the iUP for the iPhone 7 -> 8? Do we know how paying off the previous loan works? Does it have to happen at the same time or can you setup the new phone and transfer everything over etc and go back later - or does it have to be paid off first for the second iUP approval to go through?

This definitely was available. They just changed the system you had to use to do it. You had to go via the Apple Store and pay as if you were shipping to store - but once you'd done that, the process was the same as previous years. Phone held in your name (but already paid for) :)

You just couldn't "Reserve" a phone for non-iPP/iPuP pickup at the reservation site - you had to pay via the store.
It was possible on models that were in high availability, but I recall that if you wanted a Plus or a Jet Black model in the first week or so, they all seemed to go to the iUP site.

Oh sure - most stores had zero jet black stock on day 1 though :)

can you be actvely using two apps at the same time? eg my iphone to access a saved iphone X for home delivery as fast option, and an ipad going through IUP pages as backup?

Apologies, I should have been clearer that I meant the gold dust models. A couple of posts later I said...
At product launches, in-store pickups are allocated out of the store's general stock. E.g. store has 1,000 iPhones already heading to it, you will do an in-store pickup and one of those 1,000 is yours.

...in reference to paid-for in-store pickups. And I think that's what you were saying? That in-store pickup was basically taken from the store's existing allocated stock, not shipped specifically.

For the X, I did write quite a long argument making the case that the constraints are exaggerated - so I'm basically contradicting myself here. But if there is constraint I would expect in-store stock to be for iUP upgraders first, then new iUP buyers, and then in-store pickup/walk-ins. In other words, pre-paid in-store pickup could conceivably not be an option on Friday morning.

If you’re upgrading from IUP after 11 payments the ‘closing’ of your current IUP and setting up a new one is all done for you in store.

If you haven’t yet made 11 payments, this can still be done in store with the additional ‘early upgrade payment to bring you to the 11 months.

You can also settle your finance directly with Barclays at any time.

All this info is on the Apple FAQs towards the bottom of this page https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/iphone/iphone-upgrade-program

But that’s with common sense applied. Apple would probably be thinking get new IUP customers signed up first and get them committed to Apple knowing the people who are already on IUP and waiting to upgrade are not going anywhere

Not just common sense, but also with Apple's behaviour last year (there was an outcry from iUP upgraders which hit the tech blog headlines), and the news that there are separate availability streams for upgraders and first timers showing on the back-end, applied. I think it will happen that way. :)

Only site I will ever trust is gumtree as i meet the person and you can tell what is legit. I lost my apple watch series 2 on ebay by some scammer. I got some fake emails from paypal which was him saying funds were in the account and be sent to my paypal when the item was sent and i sent the item and no money was ever sent and then it said i had to transfer money to the customs in nigeria. So I lost my series 2 for nothing so now I will close my ebay account for good and never use that again. Think i will just sell on comparison sites from now on.

I did sell my ipad pro 12.9 2nd gen for £670 on gumtree that same week so least that worked out

you are seriously dumb. why would you not even check your paypal account to see if funds were there before sending the item. SMH

It’s good to see there’s a tangible benefit for IUP than just a glorified loan

Quick question though, when do you actually lock in that particular order? At what stage in the process? Add to cart? Or after you check out.

Thanks.

I’d also be interested to know this. For example when upgrading via the IUP surely when selecting a time to collect, the phone is reserved for you because if you spent too long deliberating someone else may buy it so would it tell you rather than let 2 people arrange to collect 1 phone?
