Their page which I also screenshot after paying the deposit clearly has SIM free under the contract section. They’ll obviously try and wriggle out of it but they either cough up on sim free or I’ll have my deposit back. Their contract prices are nuts.

Just checked mine. 27ms and 32 download.
without being pedantic it will be the ping response from the apple servers/cdn that will be the measure you need...

but it will be pretty irrelevant as it will be the response from the CDN edge server that you will see.. when you've got a million or so people trying at the same time it will be a different matter.

but again, its not something we need to worry over

another slight aside.. I seem to resolve to an Akamai edge server in Holland!

Really unsure wether to try to get an X, 64 or 256, typical Apple made a drop from my 7+ 128 which is perfect.

Both sure what to do, not using all 128 but more then 64, which is what Apple want really!

I use iCloud photo library, have top tier iCloud, it's using 35Gb on my iPhone, but suspect it would use less on a less Gb iPhone, is this what happens?

I'd have to delete some videos and big apps, and nearly then be at 64Gb but unsure really.

What are other '128Gb'ers doing for an X choice?

If Apple made a 128GB tier then it would be probably be £999, £1099, £1199.

So you could see it as a good price for 256GB! ;)

Well it clearly says '£25 off the upfront cost' and below it is a table of contract prices and the upfront cost. They didn't say they will deduct £25 from the SIM-free price.

You should call them now and ask for a refund, because they wont be offering the discount on the SIM-free phone. Also, logically speaking, it doesn't make sense to offer discount on a SIM-free phone worth £999+. They're offering the £25 discount on contracts because they earn a lot of commission by selling you the phone on the contract, so they can afford to give the discount there, because even with the discount, they will be earning a lot of money in commissions.

I was in the same situation last year: I had a 64gb 6S which was doing me fine. Was using more than 32gb storage but less than 64, so ended up with the 128gb 7+ because I didn't want to end up running out. The 64 is more of a fit for me (I've 89GB free space on my 7+) So personally I'm pretty happy it's back.

That’s interesting

My ping at home is about 21 on average with 73MB download and 19 upload

Your circumstance then yes 64Gb is fine, but mine is currently I'm not then 64, less than 128 so unsure. Apple as well could easily have had a flagship £1000 iPhone with 128Gb in 2017 surely....

I’d be happy with no additional £25 and just the sim free. But I’ll also listen to what their contracts might be.

I was surprised to see I’m only using ~17gb on my 128 iPhone 7. I’m on the 200gb iCloud tier so have room to increase that if needed. I’m going for the 64gb X

Wow that's low. What's yours iCloud photo library using? I'm also on 200Gb and now shared that with all family, still loads left though.

I have some apps that are nearly 3Gb individually alone!

Just checked currently using 95Gb, 10Gb videos and iCloud library 22Gb so removing these is 63Gb....

I’m using 120gb of iCloud storage.

Just had a thought about how these storage numbers sound so normal these days....my first ‘computer’ was a Sinclair ZX81 with a whopping 1k of memory - of course I had the expansion block to increase it to all of 16k!

Jumping on the 64GB wagon too; after iOS 11 clean up am currently on 31 of 128 so 256GB personally is too OTT:rolleyes:

I'd say if you don't plan on using the phone for more than a year, get the 64GB, otherwise get the 256GB, because you can't upgrade the storage after you buy it, so if you need more storage in the foreseeable future and you plan on using this phone for multiple years, then your only option will be to buy a new phone with more storage (or move everything to iCloud and constantly stream your data), so it's best to go with 256GB.

I will try & maintain that storage size until :apple: reinstates the 128GB model

Am with you there , am using it till next Sept or should I say “Nov”:)

This is absolutely not true. I have never bought an iPhone direct from Apple, always through a carrier. I’ve swapped multiple phones in the Apple store because they haven’t worked.

This is not policy. Did you receive a sealed-box retail unit? If not, you were dealt with through Apple support, not a retail exchange, which is exactly what I said.

MatthewWallis is correct, there is NO difference in how the Genius Bar treat warranty replacements between Apple sourced, network sourced or retailer sourced handsets.

They are all exchanged for the same stock if required (the Genius simply transfers the details to the replacement for lock status etc).

The only difference is that in months 13-24 if bought direct from Apple they will still offer support under consumer law (so effectively a second year of warranty if Apple was the retailer).

Bit of a niche question here but is it possible to change the payment method once a pre-order is made but before the card is charged? Reason being is that I have a new Amex on the way and a spend target to hit to get some airmiles. Sadly I don't have the card yet and unless it arrives tomorrow (I doubt it will) I won't get it in time. If I order on another card now will I be able to swap the card early next week before I'm actually charged?

Yeah payment details can be changed anytime after the pre-order/order is placed and before the item ships. Applies to all Apple products.

But if Apple decides to charge your card for the full amount or try to hold the amount when you place the order, then I guess it wont work.

I have a card which can more than easily take the hit. I'd just prefer to divert it elsewhere for points related reasons. Anyway, that's the answer I wanted to hear. If it hits the wrong card then it's not the end of the world. There are other ways I can make the target.

From past experience when do charges tend to hit if I'm lucky enough to get one that arrives Friday? I'd presume Wednesday?

Your card is charged before it ships, so let's say you get Friday Nov 3rd delivery, then it will most likely get charged on Nov 2nd on Thursday, so one day before, but could be two days before as well.

Wow you guys are fast. Fab. That's just what I wanted to hear. I'll order on Friday with another card but give Amex a call tomorrow and ask them to hurry up so it's here early next week at the latest.

Please read what I wrote. I said a retail exchange. Genius Bar comes under Apple support exchange, which, while potentially completed in an Apple store, is different. The reason this matters is that you can bet that Apple stores will not have white box iPhone X units on day one and thus if you come in on day one with a defective iPhone X from a carrier you will be SOL for 1-3 days.

If Apple don’t have white box stock, exchanges would be retail units, again irrespective of where it’s from. Apple always have a separate stock for Genius Bar exchanges.

Anyone done any dry runs to see how long it takes them to get through the IUP Upgrade screens on the Apple store app?

Done a few, preordering the iPhone 8; from a fresh app open and takes me about 25 seconds to get to the point where I have to choose a pick up time.

Interested if anyone else has an equivalent time. Lol.
