Also i cant see my vista hard drive as a startup drive on startup disk pref. window. So im not even sure if im booting on windows really... However i am holding alt and then pressing right, enter and waiting... but nothing happens. The fan of the 4890 spins wildly as my screen stares at me blackly.
:(

That is the problem. You can't do that. I don't know why. But you'll have to set Windows as start disk in OSX>System settings>Startup Disk.

The card is not "injected", the "injection" is simply some files in OSX to make it understand what card it is. It does not change the card itself in any way, or your machine for that matter.

yeah after a little bit of search i found out that Paragon for ntfs (read-write-access) app was causing my mac to oversee the windows partition.

Also i apologise for not being perfectly coherent.

just got my new 4890 and it works like a charm =) just booted mac up with it and loved it. Tried playing Neverwinter Nights 2 on everything full and not even a smidge of lag.

Then i thought... "hey why not try it on vista, that'd be nice!" so i did...or tried to. heres the climax:

my injected sapphire 4890 for PC ... doesn't work on a pc -.-

durr... wth? i did everything correctly afaik and hey the card works on mac! but not on vista? :S

i booted up with my old x1900 and installed 4890 drivers... still nothing...
do i need to do something different or something? :S

Just curious, what 4890 are you using? Sapphire, xfx?

I'm using the Sapphire 1GB 4890.

if you'd like the exact details here is where i bought it from:

NovaBilgisayar

However be warned, its Turkish.

Im now on vista playing L4D on everything Full. I feel like i just bought a Brand new computer =))

lookin & feelin really good.

Thanks for the reply back. I was just curious though, because reading reviews on newegg about the xfx 4890, it says that newer revisions 1 x 6pin + 1 x 8pin. I wonder if that affects things when using the mac ati cables, and also if this was the case with the sapphire 4890 as well...

cable problems

Just to make things clear, i suspect the failure of those 3 4890 in a row to be due to the fact that i have a ESata cable plugged to the motherboard, its not a PCI card, that might explain the problem... but not sure, since i will not get another card to test...
Its probably not a problem with the Y molex cable attached to the DVD plug, or the regular ATI cables I attached later to the card.

<---- using 4 drives + 1drive connected by sata to motherboard and a 4890 working.

EDIT: wait, esata, that is a different thing right?

I went to buy a sapphire 4890, but none in stock, and as the x1900 had **** itself was impatient and bought a HIS 4870. Couldn't get the injectors to work so flashed the card. Only problem is the screws holding the heatsinks on are too big so have card in slot 2 which is 8x wide not 16x. no idea if this will even affect me though.
Here is the OpenGL score for it, and the OpenGL score for a 20"imac with 9400m.

Addit: this is on my Aug 2006 Mac Pro

2006 means PCI 1.0 which is half the speed of the present PCI 2.0, so basically you are running 4x PCI 2.0.

Yes, that will cut off performance by what, 10-25%?

Just saw off the screws =)

The 6pin to 6pin PCIe cable which you can use to hook up both conections to the logic board is also available from Apple at 12$. There is an official spare part number on it and it can be ordered world wide. I got it from a German AASP in 36h. The Apple number is 922-7128.

Does anyone know if this cable would work?

2x$8 is a lot cheaper than the 2x$30 (cheapest price I can find on part 922-7128). It has the +2 at one end but we could just leave that hanging.

To answer my own question, I think the answer is no... It appears the card and the motherboard both provide female connections.

I'll keep lookin for a cheap solution. If I'm going the XFX 4890 route i'm going to do it the 'right way'. :D

I found a couple solutions. First for those armed with solder guns and know they can get cheap wire at ace hardware:

Second for those less ambitious, get two of these... this seller has a couple listed from $2-$8:

Unfortunately, the cable isn't that common. :( ATI and Svideo.com offer the it, and last I checked, ATI was less expensive.

I just chucked my superdrive on Gittigidiyor(e-bay in turkey) for 40 $ and used their power outlets, without additionally buying anything.

so in the end i ended up with +40$

your alternative; -38$

78 $ difference, durr....

But thats just me, i have about 3 TB internal and 7TB External HD's and don't use cd's ( no not even for installing win or mac or nux) but can't see why it shouldn't apply to anyone. (e.g. cough up the ~80$ for an internal HD and copy all your cd's there?)

so you're using the power supplies from your superdrive to power your 4890? that's brave. I'd be afraid of melting the logicboard. I don't think those molex connections are able to handle the type of power needed to run a power-hog vid card like the 4890. Seems to me that there are at least 2 on these boards with sad faces after doing what your're doing. Maybe I'm wrong, but i wouldn't chance it.

Get special connectors from Ebay. There are a lot of them. Mac Pro logicboard is too expensive for doing experiments with molex from 2nd superdrive also it do not looks good ;> I'm gonna get mine in about two months time if HD4890 will be a little bit cheaper.

Now why the hell would the LOGIC BOARD "melt"?
The idea of it all is to NOT take power from the logic board at all -_-

Molex connectors can handle more power then a 4890 max load.
I mean, the card even INCLUDES the cables to accomplish this thing.

I have tried burning a DVD at full speed while playing Crysis at the same time and my card is overclocked. No problems at all.

And this guy even removed the superdrive, creating a dedicated GPU powersource. Where's the need to scare him?

also it do not looks good ;>

It looks exactly the same. 2 cables coming out behind the fan cover, just like the motherboard ATI cables would.

How to remove the superdrive ?
