The Rominator,

I just installed windows to get a copy of my card's rom file. Can you apply your magic on it? I can try it on my card.

Thanks

I think you will have to use Netkas injectors...don't know if there will ever be a flash solution for 4890.

All depends on if Device Id 9460 ever makes it into Apple's extensions.

It is unfortunate that XFX doesn't have Dual DVI as 4870 XFX does.

I am using netkas' add ons, but I wanted to try to get my second DVI working as I have 2 monitors and one VGA projector ... :( And dvi2vga doesn't work at all.

Oh well, I guess I will be ordering the xfx 4870 today.

Thanks for the help.

Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU!

My X1900XT is on its last legs (read BAD artifacting and constant crashing) and I've been looking around for a week at what I can do to replace it. Its almost impossible to even find a proper Mac 8800GT. This thread is a great find! I'm going to grab a 4890 ASAP and try this out.

Are the links on the first page still the proper relevent ones; or have there been new versions released?

I downloaded these:
http://rapidshare.de/files/46982841/ATI_Init.pkg.html

Installed

And this: http://rapidshare.de/files/46893369/accel.tar.bz2.html

Which I installed with kexthelper
(@ http://cheetha.net/)

Of course doing this with my Mac card in the comp.

Rebooted with 4890 in slot 1, but still no picture. Scratched my head for
a while, and remembered I had only 10.5.6 of OSX. Dont miss that! So I
updated and then the card ran.

However I did not have Quartz extreme enabled and no video in VLC player.
So I installed this too:
http://rapidshare.de/files/47140484/...cards.pkg.html

and then everything worked!

I've read through this entire thread, and didn't see anything about any new versions of the kexts, but I just want to clarify.

Bump for Tower-Union.

Probably same mac as him and getting my 4890 from dubai next week. Just want to be up-to-date on everything before i go apeship for the rest of the summer.

I just reinstalled Leopard on my Mac Pro two days ago, and such I gathered all the files mentioned in my Main Post in a ZIP.

You can find them here, forever and ever:

-----> http://www.groths.se/ATI4890.zip

Also don't forget you need 10.5.7, and if you install the ZIP before 5.7 you will need to reinstall QE_CI pkg (atleast I had to)

Thanks Cindori! Is there any particular order that I have to install them in?

Also Syonidism, thanks for the bump, 2.5 hours after my post :p

burned 4890

Just a little update
I received a third 4890 Sapphire, and plugged it, and boom!
A component next to the fan burned! Its just toasted! On first ignition!
My rev1 Macpro is ok, but the card is useless, the fan is dead so after a while the card shuts down.
I dont know why this happens with my unit? I just have one thing plugged to the motherboard, its a Esata sonnet cable, not a PCI card but a cable with a double Esata on the connectors of the motherboard... Anyway, i wont know if its the reason why i fried 3Radeons in a row, cause i dont think i can give it back to the store now....
:(
No graphic update for me until the next machine

Djulz: How did you power your cards?

I powered the 2 first with a Y Molex from DVD compartment, then i had the 2 Mac Pro, Dual PCI-e Video Card Power Cable, regular stuff. And still fried it.
Any one of u is having Esata connected to the motherboard?

New 09 Pro?!?

Hi All...

I just bought the 4890 (Sapphire/Over-clocked)

I have a 2.66 new 2009 Pro.

I have ordered the molex power adapters so I can run it from the powerdrive bay, and hopefully find a way with the adapters and splitters and things I ordered off amazon to eventually power it and getting a Blue Ray drive.... but lets stick to one topic at a time

I don't need any of the drivers because I have a new machine? and 10.5.7 apparently makes some of them less relevant/needed I am aware after reading the last 8 pages.....

Am I missing anything needed to pop this in once I run power (is there anywhere else on the new 09 to get power from? Power Adapter is sealed, and there are no other cables/ports/anything to plug into without taking the Chassis out and getting the the MB behind the whole case......

Thanks a bunch

-Zac

You'd want to use this cable (x2) for powering the card. Attempting to run it off the Molex connectors could result in damaging the PSU. ;)

Excuse me, how did you manage to translate "Not yet reported" into "could"?

People have been doing this for years - including myself, with no problems.

I don't think there can be any argument that dropping $25 to power the GPU from a power source designated for the GPU is a better idea than having a PC like nest of power cables bringing power down from drive area.

Using the official cables should ALWAYS be the first and best option.

I ended up buying the 6 pin connectors needed (erm, cable that is)

Two Questions:

Where is the port found on the MB? Will I just see it if I look (at work :D ) or do I need to go nutz and remove and screws?

2nd: Will the card just "work"? lol.... I know I am overthinking this, but someone just say yes or no with an explaination :)

Best everyone, thanks as always!

As it happens, I recall a thread where a member recently lost the PSU (not that old). It occured after installing a graphics card, and obtaining the power via the Molex cable in the empty optical bay. Startup draw was pulling more than the rail was made to handle. Eventually, it went.

The specific card will make a difference, but the 4890 would have a large enough draw IMO.

So I linked the original cables used on the Logic board, to distribute the load on the intended rail(s). :)

Somebody running two 4870s - can't remember offhand whom - did it by using PCIe 6-pin Y-splitters so there were two taps coming from each port on the logic board. He said it worked, no problems. It was in the dual 4870s thread.

Not sure if you posted this before, but did you buy a PC version of the card, or the Apple version? The PC version will have to be flashed. The Apple version will just work. And, as for the power leads, they are on the mother board right next to the front fan assembly, near the airport and bluetooth cards on the revision 1 and 2 mac pro. Not sure about the new ones. If you bought the card from apple, which I don't think you did, it has the instruction on how to install the card. Maybe you could find those instruction online.

edit: I just realized this was the 4890 thread.... d'oh! The hookups will be the same as the 4870, basically. And for it to work you'll have to run netkas' injector.

I wasn't sure if it was one or two of them , but the startup draw was the problem. Though it's a short duration, it does damage the PSU. They stress too much, and eventually die. :(

Still a better idea to use the cables (or make your own), and place the load on the rails intended for graphics cards. ;)

It can also leave the Molex available for other items stuffed in the optical bay. Necessary if it's already used for something, but handy for future expansion if it hasn't. :)

ATI doesn't list the max draw for the 4890 (8800gt is 105W), they just say it needs two 75w. so max can be assumed 150.
The max power available would be higher, as cards have access to another 75W off the PCIe slot (75W x3). :) So 225W max. ;) :D

getting mah pc version 4890 tomorrow and ah em goanna flash it Bleachez!

We iz gonna game till theres no sugar left in mah veinzzz!! Booyah!
