no, i meant - dont mix PKGs. (not the kexts)

That's probably what went wrong, so many versions, but not able to make difference... It does not always display the date of release nor it has a number.
Great Job anyway!
As of now my problem is that one monitor works with the 4890, but after a while (i still have the 7300 in slot 4 with other monitor) the display on the Radeon suddenly goes black, as if there was no signal. very weird... I then have to reboot because everything becomes erratic.
I power the 4890 with a y molex cable, to the ODD on its single last molex. Might be a power issue? Powered from the closest to the motherboard DVI.
Cindori gave a good step by step, but im not convinced the files are the latest, since things move quite fast with every updates by Netkas. I find disturbing the fact that you cannot make a difference from each different version (i might be wrong)... Also consider that an updated step by step might be of use, with new files, and exclusively for the Macpros, since i ran into lotsa material for the hackintoshes.

OK i have good news and bad news

good news, my 4890 was not fried. it worked

bad news, dual dvi is not working. I only thought it worked because it works for a while, then crasches the system. Sometimes long, sometimes short. Never had time to test it thoughroughly until now. Sorry. I guess ill edit the main post.

anyway, it does not matter to me as I just installed my 7300GT in the 4th slot and it delivers dual link dvi on its first port.

any1 knows a temperature monitoring app?

Hmmm... Can't risk knackering my Mac Pro, so I think I'll save up and get a 4870 from the Apple store. Shame that they're so bloomin' expensive though. :(

Temperature Monitor is very good
http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html

It does not show temp of GPU.

Gonna edit bios on 4890 to get clock in OSX and try OpenGL test, but I have to do some reading on that first

Definitely an interesting read! There definitely need to be more graphics options available for the MP, but this is something I'm looking into when I get mine. (Please, God?)

DAMN YOU! I was so excited to NOT have to flash a 4870... guess it's back to the drawing board for me! =(

ive monitored my computer temps with the iStat widget but its pretty mainstream so youve proably taken a ride in that train.

just felt like saying since no one else did.

also the time differences may be caused by the custom fan itself? im a single monitor user so ill probably get the 4890 and ill install it stock so maybe i can give the results of what'll happen with the stock 4890 without the fried logic boarded mac etc.?

off topic; anyone have any idea on whether or not the 4890's price drops anytime soon?

I just dont get why Im not getting dual dvi now. I remember having it before I fried my comp. Playing around with extended desktop in OSX, then shutting down and started to replace cooler.

There must be something to it. Like, resolutions or something.

The whole 4800 series was just dropped. You wont see another drop until Windows 7 and Direct x 11. In sweden the 4890's are 1999:- kr atm. = 248 USD.

ah well least we have the same figure for cards at least.

btw have you tried iStat??? i also use smcFanControl however i wouldn't recommend it in your case as some people say its buggy and you have an un-stable system. (however i haven't had any problems with it and am quite happy)

My dual card solution works in Win 7 too - that's a shocker, cause I read it could not be done

Satisfied with my dual card solution

I bought the same card as Cindori (as far as I know, basic Sapphire 4890, 1GB) but unfortunately it just doesn't work under OSX - no matter what I do. Runs fine in Windows with bootcamp, but only gives black screen (not even waking up the monitor) when trying to boot OSX.

I've installed all the files mentioned in the first page and followed it closely, I'm running 10.5.7 - I've now even tried the old pre-10.5.7-drivers - but without any success. I also tried the Big Radeon Guide from netkas.org, but still nothing. I have early 2007 model MacPro, 8x3,0GHz.

Anyone else experiencing similar problems - and more importantly, any tips how to get that damn thing finally working under OSX?

Well I got My Sapphire 4890 1Gb up and running.
only boot in osx with 1 monitor (dvi) attached.
But in windows7 everything works perfectly.

When i Boot with 1 monitor attached in OSX, and i connect the second DVI monitor, it works for 10 seconds, then osx freezes and reboots.

When OSX is running, and i connect the second screen via a DVI>VGA connecter, it receives no signal.

And when i boot OSX with one DVI, and the second on VGA it does not boot.

Single, huge, CRT. :)
Sony GDM FW900 with DVI->VGA-adapter, running in 1920x1200 resolution.

vga is very unstable for radeons 48x0

try pluggin it in one port , and pluging just dvi2vga adapter to another one, if not work, swap ports.

Yeah, last night I read about problems with DVI2VGA from your blog and that may very well be why I'm having troubles... Thanks for the tip, I try different connections as soon as I get home. I can also try with my TV, if the DVI2HDMI gives me a picture, then it probably is VGA related...

Yeah, is it not wierd that it actually works for a while?

Could we not fix this in some way? netkas?

OK, I have a few questions:

1) Does 4890 works with one dual-DVI port and Cinema 30"? I don't need other port.

2) I don't want to use injector method, I want to flash it for good with Mac firmware. Where can I find procedure for 4890 to do it? I don't care about Windows or BootCamp compatibility.

3) If I flash 4890 with Mac firmware, does that overrides higher clock of the 4890 and I get original Mac 4870 performance or not?

4) Is 1 GB VRAM used properly within OS X with current Apple drivers?

5) Is there a way to overclock the card within Windows and that those overclocked settings remain active in OS X?

Thank you very much! :)

4890 is injector only

there is no firmware for it...may be possible to write one but I think biggest issue is device id doesn't exist in OSX, so only way to write a firmware would be if firmware could overide device id
