I'm planning to pick up an XFX 4850 (not getting the 4870 because I have a budget to stick to). My question is, will both the 512MB and 1GB versions of the 4850 work or is there a VRAM size limitation with the 4850 and Mac OS X?

skip the 4850

if you dig around, I did and still have a 4850.

All the issues never got ironed out, it is FLAWED on a Mac Pro

Pony up the extra $$$ to get a 4870

If it means your kids won't eat for a week, get a used one to save some $$$.

Just FYI,

HIS RADEON 4890 does not work with dual output.

Just got mine installed last night and have been running it for some time with games and regular use with no issues.

Oh, it's nothing like that. It's just that I'm purchasing this for my Mac Pro at work for our company LAN parties and don't want to invest too much money in gaming upgrades on my work machine. If it was my personal Mac Pro I'd go all out and pick up a GTX 285 ;)

Seeing as how there are outstanding issues with the 4850 the extra money will be better spent on the 4870 like you suggested. Forgive me if I'm asking a question that has been answered already but is the XFX 4870 the best option or does brand not really matter?

the XFX 4870 has been far and away the least problematic. Brand does matter.

Thanks for the info! Just to double-check since I've been pouring over all these threads this afternoon and am a little confused, there's no need to flash the ROM on the 4870 anymore because of the Netkas injectors is that correct? I have no need for two dvi ports or Windows compatibility, just need one dual-link dvi for Mac OS X gaming on a 30 inch. :)

those scores is cpu bound

you need to set these options - benchmark, multisample x4, anisotropy x16

My x1900 just got fubar'd by itself. (probably overheat... during msn messenger chat...)there are so many artifacting on the screen that i can barely see 1/3 of the screen itself .

timing is actually good but also bad, getting my 4890 tomorrow but dont have spare computer for injector... bah.

Found smth new about 2.5 GT/s link speed issues, maybe its not really an issue but some cosmetic problem

installed pciutils port to macosx from by joblo ( http://www.x86dev.org/forum/index.php?topic=307.msg2638#msg2638 )

and ran lspci -vv for my card (4850)

got this output

You don't. The Accelero Cooler plugs into the card, just like the stock cooler would.

Thanks. I was reading that other guide and it had examples of other power sources. I guess I am going to get this started as the noise factor is beginning to annoy me now.

How would you power the cooling mod on early 09 models as the superdrive uses different power connections?
It can be done by making adapters out of 3rd party cables. :) Rather handy for powering additional drives (HDD's or SSD's stuffed in the optical bays). ;)

Though as Cindori pointed out, it's not needed for what you want to do. :D

just got my new 4890 and it works like a charm =) just booted mac up with it and loved it. Tried playing Neverwinter Nights 2 on everything full and not even a smidge of lag.

Then i thought... "hey why not try it on vista, that'd be nice!" so i did...or tried to. heres the climax:

my injected sapphire 4890 for PC ... doesn't work on a pc -.-

durr... wth? i did everything correctly afaik and hey the card works on mac! but not on vista? :S

i booted up with my old x1900 and installed 4890 drivers... still nothing...
do i need to do something different or something? :S

Also i cant see my vista hard drive as a startup drive on startup disk pref. window. So im not even sure if im booting on windows really... However i am holding alt and then pressing right, enter and waiting... but nothing happens. The fan of the 4890 spins wildly as my screen stares at me blackly.
:(
