I had to flash in atiflash on another pc and nothing can get it working or even show in osx or bootcamp.

I was actually ordering a sapphire new adition on pixmania but got this worthless piece of crap

"Sapphire Vapor-X HD4890 pci-e hdmi dp dvi-i vga"
PN 288-1E115-020SA
SKU# 11150-99-90R

any last advice before a roast it in the owen?
is it even possible to even make new rom for this strange card?

Cindori,

Just to let you know the Sapphire 4890 ROM you modded for me works fine in a MacPro 1,1 with no issues at all.

Thanks.

Hi!
I have a similar (maybe the same) card, and Cindori made me a new rom.
The specs for my card are;
"Vapor-X HD4890 1G GDDR5 PCI-E HDMI/DP/DVI-I/VGA"
"PN: 288-1E115-020SA"
"SKU#:1150-99"

Here is my original ROM, and a GPU-Z printscreen:
http://files.me.com/andreas.grandicki/tf62o0

And here is Cindori's hacked ROM;
http://groths.org/zeus/roms/vaporx.zip

I don't promise anything, I'm just a newbie, but since the numbers match up so good... :)

I did also order at Pixmania, and got this instead of New Edition. =/
Hoever, I got it working with Cindori's ROM, and the QECI-patch.

But I have some troubles as well. I can't get the HDMI-port to work. No picture at all. I hope the Displayport will work, as I have a ACD 24'' incoming, where I will need it... :/ (I have both QECI, Dual-DVI patch and SL)

Thanks!

PS:
Hello,

Am I the only one who is not able to get a proper install with "Kext Helper b7" ?

I have to force to quit Kext Helper after install and even so after restart MacOs is blocked on grey screen... (permissions repaired and disk repaired, nothing make MacOs start again, I have to re-install MacOs 10.6.3 combo update...)

I am running 10.6.3 64bit on Mac Pro 3.1 with 4890 Sapphire Vapor-X and very low 3D on sketchup etc...

Thanks for any advise or comment.

best regards,

léonard

If i remember correct, it hang on my computer also. I could however just restart the computer, and everything was fine.
Is this maybe why my HDMI wont work? xD

Seems that I have to test again... This time maybe with 32bit Kernel Startup... Anyway I just use DVi on that card.

Thanks for your answer !

Very intresting yes i think we have the same card !
I just tried the new rom, flashed it with atiflash in my pc,
put it back in my mac pro 4.1 8core.... same crazy 100% fan speed.
it booted to osx 10.6.3 i installed QECI 1063pkg but still nothing in about this mac or device manager in bootcamp
Have i missed anything?

I have the vapor in pcix16 slot 2 and gf 120gt in slot 1 conected to a 26 inch samsung

Do i need to have a monitor conected to the vapor at start up for osx/win to recognize the card?

I hope it´s possible to get this working in some way.
Did you do anything else to get yours to work Andogrando?

Thanks :)

Vapor-X and sleep issues

if you have vaporx with hdmi+dvi+dp, only dvi and dp outputs work.

Hi Cindori!

Have the exact same card. Do you have any issues with sleep. If I put my early 2009 Mac Pro to sleep it wakes up with a messed up picture on my 24" ACD. See attached.

Hope you can help me.

Regards
Claus

===============================
I am currently using your over-clocked rom for the XFX from your roms.zip file.

I am trying to use two displays. I currently only have a RGB cable and a dvi-i to RGB adapter that will reach the Sony Bravia. I have a long enough HDMI cable that will reach the Sony, but the Female HDMI to male DVI-I (dual Link) adapter will not get here for a day or two. The HW191D is connected via a DVI cable.

All monitors work in all ports in all cards within BootCamp (well the last time I checked they seemed to work).

I guess somehow I did the 10.6.3 Update without realizing it because I had read there were problems before I got the card installed.

I used Zeus to Flash and Update for Snow Leopard. I had not noticed the "Driver" tab. So I did not do that initially. If I remember correctly, the 4890n would not display anything, so I installed Natit. That did not solve the problem. I think I then found the posts about using the "Driver" tab in Zeus. So I did so for the 10.6.3 Update. Yeah! I had a monitior working on the 4890.

I kept reading about no VGA with the 4890, but for some reason the fact I was using the RGB cable and the adapter did not dawn on me. Since this did not dawn on me, I thought things were just not set up for two monitors. I installed dualdvi using the Kext Helper. I got an error something about cdsdaudiocapturesupport.kext not being properly installed or something.

I should be able to connect the Sony via HDMI and a DVI-I adapter to the 4890, correct? Would this be considered an exotic connection? The RGB + adapter WOULD be considered a VGA connection and will not work in OS X, correct?

I tried using only my HW191D via DVI cable in the 2600/ I get the little rotating thing and then nothing.

I put it back into the 4890 (only one monitor still) and removed NATIT.

Put it back into the 2600 and same results -- no complete boot.

Can you please tell me what I need to restore (TIME MACHINE is on, but restoring anything other than to a particular day is not an option) to get back to a starting point? I just want to get both monitors to work on the 2600 right now, and I think the the installation of dualdvi is what buggered me.

Oh my original question -- is dualdvi for two monitors or for a monitor that requires a dual dvi connection (i.e. Apple Cinema)?

Thanks so much for your help (even if you do not answer this post). All of this has not been helped by my lexdysia.

Dude, you are mish-moshing terms

So much harder to help somebody when they are guessing as to the meaning of words.

DUAl DVI = Two (2) @ DVI

Dual-Link DVI = DVI beyond original spec in terms of pixel frequency. This basically means that original DVI spec could run up to a 1920x1200 display. So, anything beyond that requires doubling the ability to run a single link.....thus, ALL Apple displays EXCEPT the 30" are Single Link, the 30" is a DUAL LINK DVI DISPLAY

VGA = ANALOG.....no matter what "adapter" this comes through, it is same signal. It has not been "adapted", it has been passed through. Card uses integrated RAMDAC to convert internal Digital signal to an analog one. It is present even when you are using DVI or HDMI, just not used.

Rominator, thanks for the quick reply. You too have given so much to this community -- thanks.

Yes what I had suspected. I have just read so much on so many topics lately that the wiki explanation of the DVI interface just threw me over the edge. I was a bit timid in asking any questions in case I had missed something in the reading of the 4870 4890 and the Golden threads but I can say I have certainly put in the effort.

So the hdmi cable with the adapter should work?

As far as backing out of changes, I was going to start with the originals of the kexts involved with dualdvi.zip. Can I just use kext Helper to put the originals back in place? I ran across some kext or plist backup or something, but cannot find again yet.I still want to get back to the point where only the rom had been reflashed and no plists or kexts or the like had been modified. I am new to Mac but not computers, so I will continue to read to see if I can answer my own questions.

Update:
I used Kext Helper to replace the three affected files (ATI4800Controller.kext / ATIFramebuffer.kext / ATISupport.kext) and am now able to use both monitors. Currently the Sony is on the 2600 until the HDMI adapter arrives.

I did get this error again when I replaced the files (well after Kext Helper told me to cross fingers and reboot)

Help

Hi ! Fred from France...
Is there any solution for tearing issues on 30" apple CD when connected in dualDVI with another Apple CD 20" ?
I have an HIS 4890 HD H489FP1G witch i flash via Zeus and installed the last driver provided by Cindori (thanks for your work !)
Sorry for my english :D
Thank for help me out !
Bye Bye

Tried and Tried...

OK. I am finally posting for help. I have read this thread for months, trying to no avail all the things mentioned here to get my Sapphire vapor X ati 4890 to work in my mac pro. I had not tried again since about february, but I figured the 10.6.3 update was a good place to start again. So many of you ahve gotten this to work that I know I'm just missing something. I have attached two kernel panics for review as well as all the info off my card.

In a nut shell I have a mac pro 1,1 and a 4890.
My last attempt was using the kernel extensions provided by the zues.app

as soon as the installer gets to registering component my machine kernel panics and will not boot with the card installed. I have the 10.6.3 Combo update downloaded and if I reinstall it I can put the card back in the machine and system profiler sees it, but no kernel extension is loaded, and its unusable. I am hoping someone will tell me what I am missing to get this working. Thanks.

AFAIK there are no solutions. Running two 20" displays doesn't have that, and I don't think two 24" either, but not a 30" and any other display.

Sapphire Vapor-X

Hello guys,

I'm trying to summarize the information I found about the Sapphire Vapor-X HD4890 with PN 288-1E115-020SA.

The content of this post in short:
- Bought Sapphire Radeon HD 4890 Vapor-X card for my Mac Pro (1st gen) recently
PN: 288-1E115-020SA
SKU: 11150-05-20R
Original BIOS: 113-BA9102-V07

- Tried to flash with Zeus => failed (card not supported)
- Finally flashed in DOS with atiflash and proper (?) ROM
- Card not working with Windows, heavy artifacts
- Slight artifacts with Mac OS 10.6.3, after installing QECI patches the screen stay black when the Desktop/Finder should appear. No display detected, as System Profiler reports (via VNC). The display is an old Apple Cinema Display HD from 2004 connected via DVI

My desired goals:
- Working card with Mac OS 10.6.3 and DVI Output
- Proper fan speed
- Card needs to work with Windows 7 which is also installed on another HDD in the Mac Pro as well (plz no dumb questions about that)

Here the complete story:
Yesterday I bought a Sapphire Vapor-X card. I did so because in my country it is, at this time, very difficult to get a Radeon HD 4890. The only card my reseller could get was the Vapor-X. I thought this is okay, because the Vapor-X is listed in the list of the "Golden Guide".
I know that the list is no guarantee for a working flashed card, so here is my first improvement for the list: Make an annotation for the Vapor-X card that newer revisions won't flash with Zeus (at least at this moment) and/or that there are known problems which make flashing a little bit more "complicated".

I had to flash mine running DOS. I could boot my Mac Pro with "Ultimate Boot CD" (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) and select FreeDOS to run atiflash. Although this boot CD boots some kind of Linux, it seems it is also possible to flash cards when running DOS from this boot CD. The "create-a-USB-bootdrive-with the-HP-tool"-solution didn't work out, neither with a large LaCie nor with a small Corsair USB stick.

At this moment my Vapor-X isn't working properly with Mac OS X or with Windows 7 on my macpro1,1. I have flashed the card successfully and it boots Mac OS, but there is some flickering and/or artifacts. I already read that this can be solved by installing QECI_1063 patch, but after installing this, the screen stays black when Finder loads (the gray apple logo in the boot screen still appears because QECI only installs kernel extensions).

I have found three users on this forum who apparently have the same card as me.

"Bodhisattvax": He found a solution to get the card working in OS X. My question: Have you tried to boot other OSes?

"fritzflint" and "andogrando" also have a card with the same PN/SKU. Any success?

There are still some problems (some of them were reported by other users):
- Wake from sleep shows a grabled display. Is this a Display Port-only problem or does this affect DVI as well?
- ROM dump with GPU-Z does not work under Windows, someone mentioned to install the ATI driver, didn't work for me
- People have complained about strange fan behaviour (but this is my least propblem)
- After flashing the card with a EFI ROM, everything Bootcamp related seems to be garbled. The interesting thing: This happened once in a while with my Apple OEM Radeon X1900, too, but the last incident was decades ago… Restarting the machine helped, but in case of the Vapor-X it does not, apparently.
- Grey Apple boot screen flickers two times when booting (some kind of black bars). They go away after boot process, but artifacting still occurs.

More random facts:
- The tool "Winflash", which is a GUI based tool to flash ATI cards in Windows, does not work. It cannot flash the Vapor-X, no matter which ROM I choose.

I would pay a reasonable amount of money to Cindori or whoever creates a good solution for me, that is:
- QE, CI etc. with Mac OS 10.6.3
- Able to boot other OSes without artifacts

Here some photos of my card.

all that text and no original rom.

you know that there are at least 3-4 different Vapor-X versions even though they look EXACTLY the same?

cant help u without the rom that came on your card

Hey,

The long text has a purpose: Help other (future) buyers to pick the right card. I wish that I had known all that information before I bought the card... And the fact that most Vapor-X cards look the same is exactly the problem here.
By what cause should I know which Revision of the Vapor-X I get into my hands in the computer store?

I hope you see my advice for your list as constructive criticism, because I want to help and not diss you.

I supplied the part number and the stock keeping unit of the card. Doesn't this identify the card? If not, please explain me why because I would be curious about that.

Here's to OEM ROM.

rom for u

flash with this rom

if flickering/dual screen problems in 10.6.3
>reinstall 10.6.3 combo update and then QECI
if still problems
>install http://groths.org/dualdvi.zip

//success guaranteed

as for part no and sku, no, card can still be different. because sapphire can all of a sudden go "hey, that manufacturer can provide us with Firmware chips that are cheaper, lets switch to those" and since the card is still the same, it keeps part number, but maybe, loses ability to flash with zeus or match up with other roms. so it's VERY hard to make a universal success guide :/

Fritzflint's 4890 ROM

@Fritzflint

Just to be sure I made a rom from your 4890 bin file.
So install dual dvi for 10.6.3. ( Which you did for the 4870 )
Install the latest 10.6.3 drivers for exotic cards install.

Flash card with the rom from this post.
Probably best to remove natit.
Put the card solo in the first slot.
Attach 1 monitor.
And tell me if it worked ;-)

Hello guys,

I'm trying to summarize the information I found about the Sapphire Vapor-X HD4890 with PN 288-1E115-020SA.

PN: 288-1E115-020SA
SKU: 11150-05-20R
Original BIOS: 113-BA9102-V07

I have the same sku and pn but the manufacturing/build number differs (A0947.. vs my A0930..). But the best success came with the 4890 ROM tables rom number 4 and modifying the fan with windows.
Like I said before, I didnt have the original rom so I had to try a few different ones. I also had some minor problems with zeus not liking the card, but after flashing with DOS, the zeus recognizes the card and It works for re-flashing now. Thou, I also had major difficulties with my mac pro not booting with the card at first, solved it with using a friends PC to reflash it.

Now everything works mostly. On Windows, everything is perfect. On Mac, after the boot I have to wait until the Cinema Display goes to sleep (1min) to get picture. The card is quiet and _fast_. Photoshop cs4 with GPU enabled is smooth as silk and the games run _much_ faster than with the old 8800gt.

Brings new life to the old trusted Mac Pro 1,1! Will be making a donation sometime soon :)
