Cindori,
Glad I could help with the Spam and Akismet solution and thanks to all for this great thread and your site.
Can someone tell me which is the right ROM to flash this Sapphire 4890 SKU with?
I don't have Windows to run a video card utility and cannot tell whether the the card RAM is Quimonda or Hynix. Is there an OS X utility that can do this?
I have read the Golden Guide and all 93 pages of this site and downloaded the set of 13 ROMs but should I use Peloche's EFIROM #1 or #2 or another?

no sorry, u can try the different roms if u wish but safest way is always to backup original.

Radeon Sapphire Radeon 4890 HD 1GB Vapor X and displayport

Hi Again!

I now succeeded flashing my 4890 Vapor-X through following this guide:

http://www.overclock.net/ati/640063-unofficial-how-flash-ati-cards.html and then installing QECI_1063 patch from Zeus.

It shows up in System Profiler as a HD 4890 and Zeus tells me the Quartz driver is installed.

Cindori do I need other stuff? Like your dual-dvi patch or?

My card is a Sapphire Radeon 4890 HD 1GB Vapor X dp/dvi/hdmi/vga,
pn. 288-1E115-020SA, SKU. 11150-05 and im on a Mac Pro 2.66 QC, 20" ACD, 24" ACD, OS X 10.6.3 v1.1

Has anybody succeeded in using this card and an :apple: 24" ACD with a mini display port to display port adapter cable? My screen is black. It works in windows with this adapter?

Appreciate all the help I can get :)

Thanks, I had a nasty suspicion that was it. But couldn't find much in the FAQs. As Mac users, why are we reliant on these Windows Utilities? I am not a coder and cannot do it but is there someone out there who could work with Cindori and get this function into Zeus because installing Windows is a PITA to achieve this small task.

I could swear Zeus already included the ability to dump the ROM, I could be mistaken though. The short answer to your question is that Macs are a novelty when it comes to any serious GPU tweaking and it doesn't help that neither ATI nor nVidia consider the Mac worth their full attention. Until Apple markets more than one choice of user upgradable tower don't expect this to suddenly change.

Radeon Sapphire Radeon 4890 HD 1GB Vapor X and displayport

GREAT...its working!!!

My setup:

Mac Pro 2.66 QC, :apple: 20" ACD, :apple: 24" ACD, OS X 10.6.3
Sapphire Radeon 4890 HD 1GB Vapor X dp/dvi/hdmi/vga
Mini Displayport :)apple: 24" ACD) to Displayport (Sapphire 4890) Adapter Cable from Circuit Assembly
2 x powercables for the 4890 "G5 Graphic Power Cable" and can be found on Ebay or ATI.COM store. I got mine here: 4890 Mac power cables
(Mac Pro motherboard has two connectors for powering graphic cards. These connectors are special and you will not find the right cable in a PC store.
You cannot use the ones supplied with the ATI card, they only work for in a PC)

Here is what I did:

0. Flashed my card in a PC with the help of this guide (you need a PC and a USB key): unofficial-how-flash-ati-cards

1. Ran 10.6.3 combo update again
2. Left combo update open, did not immediately restart.
3. Ran Zeus 10.6.3 qu_ci patcher > Select card... ATI 4000 series > Select OS... 10.6.3 > Downloads driver > Installed it
4. Restarted mac pro.

5. Downloaded http://groths.org/dualdvi.zip
6. Installed the included 3 kext; ATI4800Controller.kext, ATIFramebuffer.kext and ATISupport.kext like this:
7. Open "Kext Helper b7" and drop the 3 kext files into the window, enter your admin password and click EASY INSTALL
8. Restarted mac pro.

And BADABIIIING, my :apple: 24" ACD gave me something to look at as well :)

Thanks to Cindori (http://groths.org/), Netkas (http://netkas.org/) and all the other people who has written some of the "millions" of posts I have read about this.

Best regards
Claus

Getting only one MCuC after the compile. If somebody who understands about these things could be kind enough to compile a working rom (from the one attached) I would be thankful :D

Radeon Sapphire Radeon 4890 HD 1GB Vapor X and displayport - sleep issue

Hi again!

Thought everything was a-ok, until I put my Mac Pro to sleep :( when I woke it up again I got some nasty stuff on the screen, and the computer kinda froze.

Anybody been there? Anybody know how to fix this?

Regards
Claus

Gpu-z

I'll go with getting the ROM dump in Windows from the card before I do anything and then take you up on your kind offer Cindori.
Slow and steady is the better choice here.

Cindori,

Here is the rom dump (zipped) and GPU-Z screen (zipped).

Please would you convert it to a MacEFI bios for me as suggested at groths.com?

The card is a Sapphire HD4890 with the SKU 21150-00-40R

Many many thanks.

Hi Claus,

I got same references for my 4890 vaporX and I still can't get my macpro sleeping or have to restart 2-5 times before fan is OK and card is OK. What did you get as a "new" rom to flash your card (I can't understand which model to choose here and if it is working with Zeus tool...)

http://techpowerup.com/vgabios/inde...apphire&model=HD+4890&interface=&memSize=1024

Without a pc is that possible to get work done ?

Thanks for your detailed setup !!

Best regards,

Hi Léonard!

On my blog I have posted (bottom of the post) all the files I have used: illuminant.dk - flashing a Sapphire 4890 for Mac Pro

I used a Dell Precission  from my office. Made a bootable usb drive with DOS. I was quite easy (being that I am absolutely NOT a PC guy) :D

If (when you try to flash it with Zeus) there is a little icon bouncing twice in the dock, you cant flash it from your Mac. Mine did, and that when I decided to "steal" the PC from my office. I think that once it has been flashed for Mac in a pc, then you should be able to reflash it with Zeus.

The ROMs I have in the file for download actually comes from somewhere else, cant rember where.

Remember to backup the original ROM if anything goes wrong.

With my card ad "my" rom I dont have any fan issues, just the sleep issue. Hope somebody can help me with that.

Claus

SAPPHIRE New Edition 4890 Fan in 10.6.3 after sleep

Hi,

Everything is working great after upgrading to 10.6.3 and using the latest patchs, but I have noticed a funny/strange behavior. When I wake my system from sleep (2008 2.8 Octo), the 4890's fan seems to be spinning a little faster than normal. If I reboot the system, it is all back to normal. It only seems to happen after waking up from sleep. Anybody else have this behavior with their 4890's?

Thank you Cindori!

The ROM has the same checksum as the rom made for the VaporX (on the ROM chart), which means that theres something wrong with the card (probably because still getting a blank screen on boot). Sleep->wake wakes up the card.

To clarify, got the card as a used one and the guy before had "bricked" the card with flashing (he didnt have the intrest/internet-do-it-youre-self-knowledge to try and repair it so he sold it to me with a reasonable price :) ) Long story short, no original ROM to be seen, got the rom above using Google and the Cards manufacturing numbers.

Any ideas anybody on the blank screen problem? Thanks.

Rom Bios version

Hi Cindori,

I flashed the BIOS you sent me with Zeus 1.2 and it seemed to flash OK with a message saying the flash was successful. When I boot Windows and use GPU-Z to look at the new Bios version it is unchanged from before the flash (011.022.001.005.032404). Is this normal? The next time I ran Zeus it stopped with a message saying the bios for flashing is the same as the bios on the card, so it does seem to have flashed.

That's normal since the BIOS in the ROM is unchanged. All that's been done is some EFI has been sewn into the ROM so that it'll POST during boot and be recognized under OS X.

I bought a XFX 4890 ZSFC 1.6 and it's working in semi-decent condition. By that I mean:

1) NO DUAL DISPLAY, which is a terrible thing for a video editor

2) POOR PERFORMANCE in 3d games, in both windows and mac os x

I have read pretty much every post about flashing cards, installing drivers and followed the instructions step by step. I've tried many different roms, installed qeci patch and dualdvi.zip. Nothing worked.

My guess is most people who are satisfied with their flash cards either don't expect much in terms of performance, won't mind being below average in benchmarks, and they probably don't have dual displays.

So far, I think it was not worth the dollars I saved, when I could have gotten a card from Apple. At this point in time, I do not recommend buying a PC card and flashing it, unless you enjoy messing around with cabling and hardware hacking. I certainly enjoyed that, but I definitely do not enjoy having an impaired video card.

Just in case I'm wrong, and if there's actually someone out there with this card working 100% with dual display, could you please post the correct rom? I'd appreciate that very much.

For the record, I have a first generation Mac Pro, current OS X version is 10.5.8, and Windows XP is installed with the latest Catalyst driver pack.
