Mac Pro 3.1 with 4890, 10.6.4. QE_CI_Exotic patch for 10.6.4.pkg downloaded from Netkas' site does not work. No cover flow, expose, Aperture, etc.

The 10.6.3 update was similar in that it took several released 'patches' before a working patch was a reality.

I suspect that is why he has crossed it out!

And left the link hot...?

Sure. Obviously there is a problem with the file/fix (causing kernel panics), so he removed the link till he can figure out what is going on. If the file is still there (which it is), but he doesn't link to it, then it is the responsibility of the person grabbing the file to know if it is OK or not. Best to just wait till the creator says it is OK. (he could have left it there to allow some others to download it to debug as well, or maybe he just forgot to remove it).

This is the first time I've updated since adding a flashed 4870, and I have to say, lesson learned.

What's weird is when 10.6.3 came out, there was a fix within hours on the same day. I wonder what's taking longer in 10.6.4?

I'm going to have to go through the long process of restoring from Time Machine back to 10.6.3 soon if a fix isn't found. Not being able to take screenshots is the deal breaker to end all deal breakers for me personally.

I wonder if you can go back to 10.6.3 without TM. How would you revert the system without touching any of your files?

Apple better to do not post updates when i've got exams:cool:

actualy, when I had time, i've got no testers in IRC, so wasnt able to test the patch.

He does however link to it from the post and the link works. The only thing he did was to make the text (and link) line-through.

We can speculate forever on this...
What would be best is if netkas clarified everything here and on his web page. :)

I can test if you want. Me and a colleague both have 1st gen Mac Pro with modded ATI 4870 cards.

I meant 4890

btw, macpros with 4890, what framebuffer do u use (from 10.6.4 or from 10.6.2) and did u check/uncheck one option in qe_ci pkg ?

Only a HackPro here with a Diamond 4890- Ive tried Framebuffers from both-

In the pkg Had to uncheck the 2000 kext because of the KPs.

Ive looked through the .plist in both Versions of the buffer to try and narrow down differences....but had to go to work :(

Thanks again for the efforts.

10.6.4 No QE

Hey netkas, thanks again for working on this problem!

I have a 2008 Mac Pro with this Radeon HD 4870 card installed: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150436

I had it working fine under 10.6.2, and upgraded to 10.6.3, and used kext helper to reinstall your hacked 10.6.2 ATISupport.kext, ATIFrameBuffer.kext, and ATI4800Controller.kext. This reenabled QE and all that other goodness.

I tried the same thing again with the 10.6.4 update, no dice. After this, I tried patching them with the exotic QE package with both things checked. Still no dice. Hoping this information helps you in some way. I'll be a welcome testbed for anything you're working on if you need some feedback on a mac pro user with this card installed. It still works and boots, but no acceleration of any kind, full software mode. No artifacts or anything though.

Here is what system profiler reads my card as:

Code:
ATI Radeon HD 4870:

Chipset Model:	ATI Radeon HD 4870
  Type:	GPU
  Bus:	PCIe
  Slot:	Slot-1
  PCIe Lane Width:	x16
  VRAM (Total):	1024 MB
  Vendor:	ATI (0x1002)
  Device ID:	0x9440
  Revision ID:	0x0000
  ROM Revision:	113-B7710C-176
  EFI Driver Version:	01.00.318

Flashing Advice Needed:

Have Sapphire HD 4890 (standard model) SKU 21150-00-40R. Card tested and running normally under windows Bootcamp/Vista with most recent Windows drivers. Saved original ROM. Cindorri already provided this ROM at post 2467 (Nektron.zip), so I can use that one.

1) Would like to flash with Zeus. Is Zeus the best choice for flashing this card under OSX 10.6.3? Or, are my chances of flashing success better with GPU-Z under windows Vista? Any way to tell which to use?

2) Is this correct flashing configuration: Place Sapphire 4890 card in Mac Pro in double slot at bottom closest to RAM enclosure, and place original Nvidia 7300 -GT in the next slot up, connected to monitor. Then, after flashing, remove 7300 GT and connect 4890 to monitor.

Tks for advice/corrections

netkas, I have a HIS 4890 in a MacPro1,1 and one drive running 10.6.3, and one drive which *was* running 10.6.3 which I cloned (carbon copy cloner), and now it is running 10.6.4 (no patches, no modifications in any way. QE and Core Image not enabled yet).

If you can tell me what to look for or test I would be happy to use this backed-up drive as a guinea pig. I can erase it and start over with 10.6.0 or whatever you need...

Dito - except 10.6.4 & 10.4.11

Hi, it's Nekton1 here.
Yes, that is what I did except I installed natit first so as to enable video output from the card before the patch.
Used Zeus (must be 1.2 or later) to patch the ROM and then removed natit and rebooted. Been fine ever since. Remember toi install the QE-CI exotic patch and the dualdvi driver patch if you use two screens.
DON'T UPGRADE to 10.6.4 until netkas releases new patches for 10.6.4. I did and regretted it all day before I went back to 10.6.3.
