I have 19 ATI kext files. Replaced all by hand from the seven you provided. Then did a repair permissions and restarted. Same thing. Horrible graphics glitches all throughout the system, no dual DVI. Almost unusable. Not sure what to do now..... guess I should use Time Machine and go back to 10.6.3, but that'll probably take a long time. Wish there was another way.

All files copied correctly, and compared the sizes to your kexts and they match.

Very strange. :( Try one thing ... at reboot hold down the Shift-Key to boot without Extensions. Reboot after this and let start it normally. It will cache the kext new. Perhaps it helps.

Cmd+p+r to clear the P-Ram is a second idea.

Is your card flashed? If not look if Natit-kext from "Zeus" is installed.

All Kext are loaded like at the Picture?

Thanks for the info. I'm on my MacBook Pro now. My Mac Pro is restoring to 10.6.3 from a Time Machine backup. I've simply got to get back to work. I'm hoping the restore works and I don't lose too much data. It's going very slowly, about 4% done now.

My card was flashed using Zeus. I guess I didn't realize when I bought the card and flashed it that updating the system would be such a nightmare every time. Wishing now I'd just bought an Apple branded video card from the start. Might have spent a couple hundred more, but it's worth it. I originally thought that flashing the card was a one-time thing that made it compatible with Mac Pros and updating wouldn't change that. It's my fault for not researching more I guess, I just thought once the card was flashed for Mac that was it and you were good to go.

Upgrading to 10.6.3 was not a problem, had no dual DVI for about an hour and then a fix was posted and the fix worked great. Now for whatever reason everything is totally screwed up with 10.6.4. I'll probably sell this flashed XFX 4870 on eBay or something and just buy an Apple branded one to avoid these problems in the future.

Things are never as easy as you hope, eh? Ha!

@ProfDrLuigi

Swapping out the 7 kexts worked like a charm. Thanks for finding this.

Simply swap in the 7 kexts using Kext Helper.
Quit Kext Helper and reboot!

As has been stated, this basically gets you back to the driver set that was working with 10.6.3. None of the enhancements that may be in 10.6.4 are included. Hopefully netkas and others can look at this and see if there is a way to get 10.6.4 stuff working; otherwise, no big deal.

It is kind of discouraging that this has to happen. Apple should really get its act together and find some way to better support graphics cards. I won't hold my breath though.

It seems that my Installer don´t replace the files properly.

Here is an Archive with the kext and a little tool to install the kext´s by hand. This should fix the Problem. ANd don´t forget to fix the permissions with Apples Disc Utility!

It works ... look at the Picture :D

I can report this works nicely. HD 4890 card. The little app didn't work so well for me so I just backed up all these files, then deleted them from the /System/Library/Extensions directory, then copied ProfDrLuigi's files to the same directory, ran the "repair permission" routine in the Disk Utility and then rebooted. Quartz Express shows installed in Zeus and now I can run Final Cut Express 4 again.

I can also confirm that this package works with my Sapphire ATI 4890. I backed up all kexts and then I used the installer to copy the files. I ran the script to repair permissions, rebooted and everything went fine.

Anyone confirm that this works on 4870 cards? I'm gonna test in about 20 minutes and I'll report my findings, just wondering if anyone else has gotten their 4870 to work in 10.6.4 (I have dual dvi, but no QE_CI)

Hey, would be very helpful to know which XFX 4870 card you have. As I have stated in the "GPUs immune to 10.6.3/.4" thread, the early XFX 4870 1 Gig cards have had a very charmed existence, the ONLY 1 Gig cards to work perfectly since 10.5.7. They have never needed a hack, crack or fix of any kind.

I am going to guess you have one of the newer ZWxx models?

Can confirm that ProfDrLuigi solution works! I have a 4890 XFX and all is well.

1. Install 10.6.4 update
2. Backup Extensions
3. Run ProfDrLuigi solution
4. Repair Permissions and Reboot!

:) It's great to see the community helping one another. Bigup to Rominator, Netkas & Cindori naturally.

A little Update. I played around with the original 10.6.4 Kext. I got

ATI4800Controller
ATIFramebuffer
ATISupport

(all have the Version 1.6.16) from the 10.6.4 properly to run.

The Big problem are the ATIRadeonX2000..... extensions. Must stick with 1.6.10 by now. Tried to install the 10.6.4 Kext ends in a Kernel Panic. :( That means ... no OpenGL 3.0 for now. Here is a Package with the 3 ext´s described at the top.

hi there, i follow these steps and replace extensions from ProfDrLuigi , but still cant get QE & CI to work with my 4890 , how come ..:(

Hi

Sorry ProfDrLuigi, unfortunaly with a XFX4870 non of your soultions works. All ATI... to 1.6.10 or only ATI2000... to 1.6.10 doesn't work.:(

But your hint with the ATI2000... then helps to solve the problem with the XFX4870 :D :

These versions are from 10.6.2 and the ATI2000... from 10.6.3 and all this old stuff works in 10.6.4 ... *sigh* but it works.

Thanks.

flashed 4870 not recognized in windows

Hi ppl,

after duly flashing my sapphire 4870 512 Mb (hybrid method), all seemed to work OK in SL 10.6.4 and windows 7. However I found that my card was not recognized in windows (system can't find any info about the card). All ok in SL. Did I miss something ?

cheers

Hi, could you please include WHICH XFX4870 you are using?

Many people have had no trouble at all with these, they didn't need any hacks at all.

I tried by starting with DrProfLuigi's first and second fixes (overwrote the three files with the new ones then installed all 7) and had no success. After that I went back and tried just the first 7 and it worked beautifully.

@pfjellman - I fully agree. I used to build PCs so I'm used to spending hours trying to make things work, but now that I'm working as a professional editor, I just can't take the chance with my primary work machine anymore. From here on out I'm checking in with you guys before I install any major OSX update.

Any REAL OpenGl loss?

I am curious reading that many of you think that using older kexts results in less OpenGl support.

So I tossed in the "Golden Eagle" 4870 XFX and checked which extensions it ran. They are all 1.6.16.

Attached are the OpenGl Viewer screens.

If someone running older extensions in 10.6.4 could check theirs?

If it is the same, you can just say so, if there are differences please post screen shots.

Even with 95% of OpenGl 3.0 extension, it still "Fails" the 3.0 test. So maybe you aren't missing much?

I have a pretty new (3 months old or so) Radeon HD 4870 - ZWFC model. If you need any other information, just let me know.

Got everything working again by going back to 10.6.3. Holding off on the 10.6.4 update until someone confirms these cards are working correctly.

Rominator: Open GL test

Hey Rominator. I did the opengl test and the results do not seem to bode well for the new drivers. I do not have a monitor as large as yours so you may need to use a lower resolution to compare. However, from my test one may be better off using the older drivers in terms of Open GL, even if everything is working fine in 10.6.4.

The results:
https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/10246148/

Edit
I had forgotten that I overclocked my cards so the results are skewed in the sapphires favor. I redid the test using the older drivers on the XFX and the results are about the same as with the new drivers. So performance wise, your fine which ever you choose.

Nekton1, Rominator and others:

Working on my first flash under 10.6.3.

I have the same standard Sapphire 4890 card that Nekton1 has (same SKU number). Nekton1 was successful in flashing this card under Zeus in Snow Leopard.

I used the same ROM that Cindorri made for Nekton1, but when I flashed it under Snow Leopard with Zeus, I got:

Flash aborted. Possible reasons:

Rom already identical to card firmware. Card not compatible with ROM or Zeus.

I tried renaming the card "Ati.bin" I originally tried flashing the file named with Cindorri's name, EFIROMFX.rom.

Now, with the monitor hooked up to the 4890 card, the 4890 Sapphire card produces a black screen when I try to bootcamp into Windows Vista (it worked before the flash). I cannot even get to the boot choice window.

Fortunately, I can boot into OSX 10.6.3 or VGA windows with my old Mac Nivida 7300 card (that card is in the third slot above the 4890). My monitor is now hooked to that card.

What did I do wrong?

Where do I go from here? What should I try next?

Could I use Zeus to put the original ROM (which I saved) back?

Thanks.

Ok. So for the few that haven't found things too clear, here is a cut and dry temporary solution...

Status:
4890
MacPro 1,1
10.6.4 Combo Update fresh install.

Download and install everything in this archive with the tool supplied in the zip:
http://x7.to/yo9rxh
Do not restart yet!!!!
Repair permissions with Disk Utility.
Restart.
_________
The speed will be back, screen-shots will be back, sleeping will be fine... but... The fan on the card will be on all the time it seems. Somehow there is lots of heat coming out. I wonder if this package uses the overclocked settings.

Time to do some testing.

Test Results

I tried to match the previous test... but I'm not sure what monitor is that wide... 30"? So here is my test with the same settings on my screen res.
