netkas, I have a HIS 4890 in a MacPro1,1 and one drive running 10.6.3, and one drive which *was* running 10.6.3 which I cloned (carbon copy cloner), and now it is running 10.6.4 (no patches, no modifications in any way. QE and Core Image not enabled yet).

If you can tell me what to look for or test I would be happy to use this backed-up drive as a guinea pig. I can erase it and start over with 10.6.0 or whatever you need...

For those, who want lower 2D clocks when idle (flashing card with lower idle clocks):

DON'T DO IT !!! Card will be flickering with even the most simple operation in OS like scrolling webpage etc.

It happens when memory speed is being changed from low to high state.

So it's highly not recommended. I've tested this today under Windows 7 and GPUTool.

If you want lower idle consumption either wait for HD5XXX (27W) or GTX4XX (33-40W) or buy GT120 :)

A proper Framebuffer would enable QE?

From what I've seen, QE is not working on the card, but the system doesn't know it. This is why a screen capture will give you nothing - as the GPU hands the system the image. If you open iPhoto and view an image in edit mode, the screen will be blank. iPhoto is expecting the GPU to render the image but it's not working.

I would like to know the terminal command to disable QE. At least the system would know its off and start taking on the jobs the GPU should be doing.

I may be off base, but the atiradeon2000.pkg in the 10.6.4 package has a lot of pieces missing that were in the 10.6.3 package (i.e. no version.plist and no _CodeSignature directory). So the kext has no signature... I would think it wouldn't load.

Just an observation.

Ok. Can we also compare to a version previous to 10.6.3? Was there one?

Hi Folx.

I found a package which promised running in 10.6.4. I tested it with my Test-OS ... i got the 2. DVI Port to work ... but it hangs at the blue screens and the Finder is not starting. At the Blu Screen it changes between 2 or 3 brightnesses.

here is the Link to the File ... perhaps anyone can fix this?

Sorry for the delay... I got tore up last night
Okay, I ran the 10.6.4 combo updater just to be sure I was at a default state, then I ran the QE_CI_Exotic patch for 10.6.4.pkg (1,455,648 bytes) with only ATI4800controller selected. I rebooted. Zeus 1.3 says QE_CI are not enabled, but I'm not getting any kernel panics either...

Shift+Cmd+3 and 4 make the shutter-clicking noise, but no screenshot is generated (i'm guessing that's just because QE is not enabled).

Xeon5160x2:~ crypto7$ kextstat | grep ATI

Let me know if there is something else I can check... I won't modify anything til I hear from you.

I fooled around all day with 10.6.4 and different combinations of the four versions ATI kexts I need, but the best I could get was either full resolution and no QE/CI or one resolution and no QE/CI.
After about 4 hours, I couldn't live with no screenshots, no Preview and no DVD and and no QT and gave up and went back to 10.6.3 with the netkas QE_CI exotic patch for my 4890. I'll wait for netkas to work his magic.

4890 on 10.6.4

I'm running 10.6.3 with the 4890 with no problems. I haven't upgraded to 10.6.4 has any one had any issues?

Thanks!

You know what? After everything we've been crippled with... someone tell me what was the attraction to upgrading to 10.6.4 other then the software update icon bouncing in the dock?

Hi, can someone confirm or deny that I've bricked my XFC 4890. I was using the mac modified normalclocked.rom found among the zip file of roms. Inside that rom package for the 4890 xfc zdfc roms was one called original.rom (but it was an executable...which I didn't notice till after). In an attempt to trouble shoot and maybe get the vid card to work without sprites etc, I figured I would try the original rom (even though I knew it wasn't my original rom, I figured it couldn't hurt much...until I got kernal panicks when I tried to start the macpro).
It was at that point I realized that I had loaded a exe, instead of just a rom. Is the video card salvageable, as I can't seem to start my mac with the video card inserted, so I don't have a way that I know of to reflash it back to normalclocked.rom file.

And I don't have my original rom that was on the card.

Any suggestions? Or is that card eternally done since I loaded a unix exectuable (titled original.rom) instead of just a rom file.

Thanks, Dave

Works with my 4890 .... other cards .. don´t know.

Made a .pkg .... leech it here and have fun:

ATIFramebuffer.kext
ATIRadeonX2000.kext

ATISupport.kext

Hi

Found another Package today. Installed on my 10.6.4 Test-System ... all seems to be fine. 2 Monitors (2xdvi) Expose, Coverflow, Dashboards works smooth ....

Lucky you, but that packages doesn't work here with an ATI 4870 and 10.6.4 :( Still no Dual-Monitor, no QE and no 3D Acc. *sigh*

It seems that my Installer don´t replace the files properly.

Here is an Archive with the kext and a little tool to install the kext´s by hand. This should fix the Problem. ANd don´t forget to fix the permissions with Apples Disc Utility!

It works ... look at the Picture :D

I can confirm ProfDrLuigi's kext's worked for me - MacPro 1,1, 4890, 10.6.4. Make sure you backup your existing kexts, I then applied those the ProfDrLuigi's package and then applied the DualDVI kexts to bring back up dual monitor support. I now have dual monitor with quartz and core image.

@ProfDrLuigi

Wow! Congratulations. About to try this. But, a question...

These kexts indicate they are the versions we used in 10.6.3 but the file sizes are different. I believe Apple introduced additions to OpenGL in 10.6.4. I assume this means we won't have the OpenGL 3.0 features added in 10.6.4 if that is the case.

Have you run OpenGL Extensions Viewer?

I am one more to report that ProfDrLuigi's method worked for me. I am still trying to figure out what's wrong with netkas kexts and these working 10.6.3 files are really helpful. Im doing a backup so i can work further into this.

GayREM, i ran that tool and indeed OpenGL 3.0 Failed. Everything else up to 2.1 Passed and quartz extreme is fully functional without any problems.

The same here. Let´s wait for another Patch to use 3.0 features. I think a tricky guy will get it.

In the meanwhile I´m lucky because for now you are able to update to 10.6.4 and having a working GFX-Card.

Cheers. :D

Anyone confirm that this works on 4870 cards? I'm gonna test in about 20 minutes and I'll report my findings, just wondering if anyone else has gotten their 4870 to work in 10.6.4 (I have dual dvi, but no QE_CI)

Damn, now I'm really screwed -- tried the kext provided by ProfDrLuigi and now my screen is going crazy. No kernel panic or anything, but everytime I open a window or scroll anything, I get insane glitches in graphics and all kinds of artifacts. The whole screen twitches constantly. Tried reinstalling my backup kexts and restarting, and now same thing. Sigh... and no dual DVI anymore either.

Look in /System/Library/Extensions and look if my kext are all there. Had a Missing one (the first one) today and copied manually to the Extension-Folder. After that all was fine.

Look at the File-Size and compare it with yours. And be sure to repair the permissions with Apples Disc Util.
