Ultimate Thread: 4890 in Mac Pro

After updating zeus 2.1 and installing new exotic package. I installed the graphics update from apple. Im still having a slower than normal XFX, any other uses still experiencing this?

Caseys, What ROM are you using on your XFX card?

Just used Zeus to get whatever I needed, never anything else. Just gone from 6.3 to 6.4, put on QECI_1064.pkg and all fine

What is your system, and what method did you use?

Early 2008 Mac Pro (2 x Harpertown 2.80Ghz).

I just installed the Snow Leopard Graphic Update and then applied the QECI patch after rebooting.

I have the XFX Radeon HD 4890 HD-489X-ZSFC Ver 1.6. Mac OSX 10.6.4 updated with GU 1.0 then apply QECI_1064+GraphicsUpdate patch before reboot. Everything worked with increased FPS.

thats wierd, your app is a little bit different

do this, clear out cookies+cache+temp files in your web browser, and delete the zeus you have downloaded (and any in your Download folder)
then pick the zeus from http://groths.org/zeus/zeus.zip

I tried all different ways and still same problem. The AppleScript error popped out whenever I clicked on any buttons except the "Check Update".

Then I download the QECI patch directly (without going through Zeus) and it installed fine. I just wonder why previous versions all worked until 2.1.

Cindori, I brought Zeus 2.1 (downloaded from my end) over to a friend's MP and it worked!!! There is nothing wrong with Zeus.

I just couldn't figure out why its not working on my machine. Since 2.0 was working great. And I don't remember having any major system change.

Hopefully when 10.6.5 comes out it will work again.

I don't have the graphic warning issue. Thank you for asking.

I am too stupid to get my Sapphire 4890 work.

- I have 10.6.4 with graphics update installed
- I loaded new Zeus 2.1
- I select OS 10.6.4 + Graphics Update
- It installs QECI_1064+GraphicsUpdate.pkg
- I logg off and on again
- Check: Quarz driver installed:NO

What am I doing wrong.

Everything worked fine till I installed this damned Graphics update.

Would someone with a Saphire NE 4890 + MacPro pro, that has a working 10.6.4 + Graphics Update, post the extenstions versions you're using for:

I know it's a rather specific request -- I have QE running well under 10.6.4, but the pkgs don't work for me, and when I've installed GraphicsUpdate I break my QE.

Mad props to Cindori!

I was affraid that my XFX 489x was dead, but it would seem like its not. Haha. I rebooted without the card in it's slot, since I've noticed that OSX(or EFI) has a (quite nifty)way of tunrning cards of - hardware whise, if they are not funtioning properly for some reason.

I rebooted and used Zeus 2.1 to patch my earlier extracted original rom, then flashed my card. And: voila! Card is up and running natively! yay! Cindori, Rominator, Netkas - I love you all! Haha.

Anyways, thought Macroumors should be the first to know about this. Before I try to do some gaming, benchmarking or any thing else. =)

Btw, I will send a donation as soon as I get my next salary. Well deserved. =)

Now I'm gonna download the dual DVI patch. I'll let you know.

Would seem like my FPS is't too good. Screen sver is lagging and a general feeling of "slownes" in OSX is getting to me. Is there some thing I could/should do?

Yes indeed. =) But you picked a "bad" day to go here though, I'm going to a kräftskiva so I wont be around this time.

How ever, funny(silly?) thing; my girlfriends sisters son Gustaf (Would that be called nephiew?) is moving to Lund as well. Dunno why I should mentioning that, since there propably is quite a few Gustaf moving to Lund, for studies I guess? =)

Cindori, any other methods I should try. MY cards soooo slow. I don't think the ZDF7 has ever successfully worked. I doubt the guy who reported success did a benchmark test.

Because yes, I'm not seeing artifacts, starts up turns off fine, plays games okay. But not like this card should, its running like it has 128mbs of ram.

Quartz installed
Apple graphics update installed.
Tried the XFX roms (overclocked and non from the zip)
Tried mapp and dual dvi kexts (do i need to uninstall these if they didn't help)

An update:

I ran the Graphics Update via software update, and after rebooting installed the new Zeus 2.1 patch, and everything is back to normal. (I have dual 22" monitors, both working great)

I think my numbers are only about 30% of what they're supposed to be though, but these were the same both before and after the graphics update, so I have no idea what DrLuigi did to get his numbers.

RyanKR: According to your OpenGL tests results your card is in the range of where a 4890 should be. The only thing I can suggest is finding a copy of the original ROM for your card and using Zeus to make a custom EFI ROM. What exactly makes you think your card is underperforming?

jdhorner: Your OpenGL scores are also fine. Ignore DrLuigi's results as he apparently didn't use the standard settings when running his tests.

Something to keep in mind when using OpenGL Extensions Viewer to benchmark is that version 3.30 introduced a new benchmark test. What this means is that any testing done using 3.22 or earlier will yield inflated results compared to any version afterwards. As an example I've added my current OpenGL results. The first is testing done using version 3.14, which shows the results we've come to expect, and the second shows 3.31 benchmarking, the new standard.

great news, thank you.
I was logging on my computer today and it just stayed at a blue screen after the spinning grey screen. its changes slightly different shades of blue barely noticeable. I unplug the dvi port and plug my screen into my old card, and i get the login window. Re flashed card re installed exotic messed around with kexts. Now it really sounds like my card could have just died... odd nothing happend, though i noticed slight artifacts in gaming today...

Anyway I can find for sure if its my card or not?
