Another update on my card. I was curious to see what the OSX 10.6.2 kexts would look like so i installed the ones listed here (the dualdvi.zip) over the top of my existing 10.6.3 ones. The results were amazing!! The card is running better than ever. Have got great scores in the benchmark and Steam games can now be played maxed out and still give 100fps+. I can't believe that going back to the 10.6.2 Ati extensions would be the solution for me. Has even got rid of the slight tearing i was having with Finder windows too. This may be the solution for others too. Have included pics.

I've ran to some big problem which I have no idea how to solve. Need help please!

My setup is Mac Pro 3,1 with patched 4890. I was running 10.6.2 until I decided to update to 10.6.4 + graphics updae today. After the update I used Netkas' QE_CI from here http://netkas.org/?p=515.

Now OS X doesn't boot, I see some black and white artifacts before the login window. I can't get the safe mode working either.

What do I do?

How do I boot my system to try other patches or uninstall QE_CI?

I'm having this EXACT same problem. Please, any help or advice will be great. It simply loads with the Apple grey screen, then turns into a blue screen without anything showing. I followed the same steps as Dae.

I guess we all have to start getting prepared for OS 10.6.5 and having to update everything all over again.

I stayed with 10.6.3 because of the glaring update issues in 10.6.4, so hopefully this time everything goes more smoothly!

Ok, I bought a PowerColor HD 4890 card. And all 3d had artifacts and/or glitches. So I e-mailed PowerColor about my problem and they asked me to take a picture of my card so they could check the serial number to see if there was an update to the rom for my card. Which there was.

So I was hoping that some kind gentleman here could take a look at it for me and maybe...just maybe add that EFI addition I keep hearing about. It would be nice to be able to play games without glitches and artifacts.

Thanks in advance!

(included is the archive just the way I got it from PowerColor)

Help flashing an XFX HD4890 ZSFC v3.1 card...

Hello, All...

I've spent the last 2 days reading hundreds of posts (all with slightly different instructions) in an attempt to get my new XFX HD4890 card working on my Mac Pro 1,1 machine. The Windows 7 (BootCamp) side works perfectly with ATI's latest drivers, but the Mac does not boot up with the HD4890 in the number 1 slot. Only with the original Mac card, the ATI x1900 (in the 1st slot) will it boot into OSX.

I have tried MANY suggested methods of flashing the card to add the EFI, but none have worked so far. I tried Zeus and ATI WinFlash, but they have all "stated" that the card's ROM was the same as the modded ROM and would go no further, or state the the card could not be flashed for it was either not compatible or the ROM was "locked". I haven't been able to boot the Mac from a CD, so I haven't yet been able to try ATIFlash in DOS.

I have tried numerous ways to get the Mac Pro to boot off of a bootcd, but to no avail. UBCD method doesn't work (8 coasters so far...). WinME bootcd method doesn't work either. Of course, I tried the USB method which I now read will not work. I really do not understand why/how the Mac Pro cannot boot up with the bootcds that I made for I was VERY careful to follow the steps that were given by so many people....but without a BIOS to specify a boot order, how does the Mac know to boot from the optical drive first?

I wish there was one definitive tutorial that worked for this particular card/vers.

I have been successful in backing up the original ROM to the BootCamp Win7 side and creating the EFIMOD.rom in the Mac using Zeus, but nothing can flash the card with my new EDIMOD.rom. (I also tried the posted 13.rom that should have worked for my card, but no go.)

Sorry to babble on, but I'd really like to get this HD4890 card working without spending more long hours with no results,...for what should be a "simple" flashing task. I'd appreciate a concise step through on getting the mac pro to boot from a bootcd using only the HD4890 in slot 1. I followed Cindori's tutorials word for word multiple times, but apparently somethings still missing from the puzzle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Bassix

P.S. Some specs... XFX HD489x-ZSFC v3.1 (RV790) made in China. BIOS version... 011.022.007.005.032494 to be installed into a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006)
OS: Mac OSX 10.6.4 (not working w/ card) and Windows 7 (via BootCamp...working with card)

OK, FINALLY... I'm able to boot the Mac Pro 1,1 from UBCD and get to the ATIFlash.exe, but the HD4890 is not recognized. The only card the program recognizes is the R580, which is the x1900 card that is used to see the display at this time. If I use only the HD4890 card then I can't see a display and get to the ATIFlash.exe!

I've tried changing the slot order of the cards and tried using each card's right side DVI port to see the display, and only the x1900 card is successful at showing info on the display. (Note: The HD4890 DOES work fine when booting into Win7 via BootCamp)

Any suggestions as to how I can get the HD4890 recognized by ATIFlash.exe so that I can flash my card?

Download Cindori's flashing tool, Zeus, and it will make the EFI ROM for you.

Uh, I'm pretty sure that the Zeus Tool doesn't add EFI to my rom. It will flash my card with whatever rom I provide it with, but im not so sure that Zeus is so advanced that it will figure out the exact version of card I'm using and make the appropriate changes to the ROM.

Finally got around to installing 10.6.4 on my 1,1 Mac Pro with an HIS 4890.

Everything went smoothly! Again, a big thanks to Cindori and Netkas. Without these two it'd be a royal pain in the ass to do this.

Steps I followed:
1) Downloaded and installed 10.6.4 Combo Update from Apple
2) Opened Zeus 2.1 and chose 10.6.4 driver
3) Restarted

4) Downloaded and installed Snow Leopard Graphics Update from Apple
5) Opened Zeus 2.1 and chose 10.6.4 + graphics update driver
6) Restarted

Everything works perfectly and the update was pretty painless!

OK, in an act of desperation, I installed Natit thinking that it wouldn't work with my card...and lo and behold, it DID work! I used the ATI Flash (Mac app) that Cindori had replaced with Zeus (the ATI Flash utility can install Natit), then I used Zeus to add the latest drivers for 10.6.4 with the Graphic Update.

When I rebooted for the first time, I was shocked that it really worked...but I am still not able to flash my card's rom using any Mac or PC utilities. Natit works OK, but the card is working through an extension rather than the Mac booting it directly recognizing the EFI rom.

Any ideas as to flashing my XFX HD4890 ZSFC v3.1...anyone?

Good news! I was able to recreate the UBCD creation process and use a different CD brand (Imation) so the Mac Pro 1,1 could actually boot up into DOS.

Note: I did pull all of the hard drives out of their bays as a precautionary measure, and installed ONLY the HD4890 in Slot A with 2 power cables from the motherboard, thus leaving out the possibility of re-flashing my x1900XT by mistake. I also un-installed a previous install of Natit that I had used successfully to get my screen working prior to being able to "actually" re-flash the card.

From there, I followed the bootcd tutorials and used FreeDOS (UBCD 5.03 uses FreeDOS instead of OpenDOS) to access ATIFlash.exe. For the first time, ATIFlash was able to detect my XFX HD4890 ZSFC v3.1 card in Slot 1 (0 in ATIFlash.exe) and the re-flashing went smoothly.

When I rebooted to Mac OSX, the screen was black but I could hear that the OS was indeed loading up, so I used Remote Desktop from my MBP laptop to access Zeus that was installed already on the Mac Pro. (You can also achieve this via Screen Sharing or on an iPhone, using Jaadu VNC/iTeleport.) I then chose to install the SL 10.6.4 + Graphics Update driver. It downloaded and I then installed the package, rebooted and the screen was working off of the new HD4890 card!

It was a long learning process, but well worth the trouble. The HD4890 works and looks great in both Mac and Win 7 operating systems. I'm very happy with the results. Thank you Cindori, and all of the others here who have posted info, ROMs, and software here!

Same reason I went with an HD4890 card, too. Well...at least I can get an extra card to run VGA if I have to,...or submit my receipt for the HD4890 card to Apple for reimbursement!
(Though I think Apple won't give me any money back when they see the HD4890 is an unsupported card...?)

I'll find out what card they offer in exchange. I'm told it's another ATI... no surprise there.

:-(

OK. I got the word on the video card replacement.

Essentially, if you read the notice Apple provided (link as posted previously), it says the program only covers affected cards 3 years after the purchase date. So, seems as the notice came out Sept. 30. That means if you had an issue with the video card and you bought your MacPro BEFORE September 30th 2007 - you're SOL!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this issue went away pretty much 2007 & after. So from what I gather, the bulletin is saying that if you have a 2006 problem, and you bought your machine in 2007, we can help you.

How many people here have this issue, and when did you buy your machine?

install kexts with Kexthelper (google it)

now try boot with ONLY 4890 inside.

if successful, go ahead and flash with modified rom in zip.

EDIT

just bought a ZSFC for testing and got a 2.0 revision. it doesnt work with ati flashing tool

1) So I should load up Mac,
2) install the two .kext files with Kext Helper,
3) then shut off comp,
4) remove the x1900xt's,
5) put in the 4890, boot up Mac
6) then use your macmodified_new_XFX.rom with ATI Flashing Tool...

or will it simply not work as your edit suggests (if it unluckily turns out to be the 2.0 revision instead of the 1.6)?

thanks again, you guys are wonderful.

I've managed to all of the above with the exact same card, on Mac 3.1 (early 2008) It works and runs all the maximum resolution on a 30" Cinema screen, the problem i am having is that there are little glitches on the screen 8x8 pixels in size.

Can any one help?

Mac 3.1
XFX HD 4890 ZSFC ver 1.6
Cinema 30"
Mac OSX 10.6.4 (can only assume it had the graphics update as I can't see any updates available)

Many Thanks

Matt

Got a flashed XFX 4890 ZSFC 1Gb working just fine since many months ago.

Updated to 10.6.4 now, with Graphics Patch. Used Zeus to inject drivers. No problems at boot, besides no dual dvi. Then updated with dualdvi.zip and it's all back to normal.

Only problem is a known bug that makes your mouse skip if the second monitor is turned off. That was before 10.6.4. It's no biggy.

Xfx 4890

I finally have it working, managed to find another ROm from netkas. and that did the trick.

Going to try the Dualdvi link to see if that gets it all working, will this allow me to use the DVI2VGA adaptor and DVI2HDMI?

Also not been able to test it, but do the component HD breakout cables work in this setup.

And one more thing can the apple DVI 2 s-video adaptor work on this model. or is there another means to get that to work?

Many Thanks

XFX HD 4890 ZSFC ver 1.6

I tried the Dual DVI.zip

It didn't seam to do much. Its difficult for me to test since I have one screen! But I tried putting the 30" into the other DVI socket instead and I still get a low res screen? Can anyone or zopiro confirm if you are getting full resolution out on both monitor ports? either as one screen or with 2 attached?

Also have you any joy with the DVI2HDMI and the component breakout? Sadly I am testing things that I have no means to set up at the moment.

Many Thanks

Quiffy

still looking for a way to flash an 4890 Sapphire new edition.
Cindori posted a DOS way to do it, but cant make it happen here :-/

any ideas? thanks

my thoughts exactly. i'm still running 10.6.3 on my mac pro because i couldn't get dual monitors to work in 10.6.4

No with 10.6.5 coming out "any day now", i'm just holding off until i hear some good news. I have a Radeon HD4870 1GB.
