50% chance ;-)

I see...so probably safer to use injectors.

So basically the only real advantage is you get a grey boot screen and can use the option key to select devices, correct?

You still need 10.5.7 to run either way regardless, so installing would require an install disk of 10.5.7?

also with flashed card u can run snowleopard.

Will I not be able to do that with the injectors? Or at least until an updated version comes out.

I really don't want to brick my card, so was that 50% thing a joke, or a real factor?

Also, when I say brick, I mean PERMANENTLY bricked. As in not able to flash the backup back on it.

50% was a joke

if your pc doesnt suddenly lose the power, flashing should work fine

in worst case you always can reflash card with its original bios (if u made backup)

Sweet, that was the answer I was looking for.

I use a UPS backup, so power shouldn't be an issue..

Thanks for the help.

Aww, netkas. You spoiled the excitement there :p

Flashing is fine. I mean, there are rarely coming out new versions for videocards, but BIOS's are released regularly for PC motherboards.
Same risk. Well, bigger really. With a videocard you can always place a second to see anything on the screen ;-)

OT:
gigabyte mobos have dual bios, so its very safe to flash mobo there :D

Finally, mouser.com order got here today and I was able to build the power cables.

XFX 4890 ZDFC rocking the house. COD4 in OSX is more than playable with all settings on max, including soften smoke endges. HAWX came in the box, this card just rips through everything thrown at it!

Someone please send me their second high resolution monitor and i'll test dual dvi ok thanks!

My card is working :) Using the injector trick atm, will try the flash ROM later.

Hi everybody and a SPECIAL THANKS to netkas for his hard work !!

I would only ask if I can update the 4890 from Windows running in boot camp mode from my Mac Pro.
I don't have an Hackintosh :)

Are there some problems ?
Thanks a lot

Carlo from Italy

Should work. Gonna find out in a bit here myself.
Will post about that in the ROM topic.

I have read through the forums and I am pretty lost with what is going on with all these injectors and flashing. I am relatively new to the Mac world and just got a Nehalem Mac Pro. I bought a GTX285 mac edition(yes I know i got raped on the price) and its less than satisfactory. Playing WoW on ultra on my 23" ACD works fine until I decided to flip my mouse an turn fast. It stutters every time. In boot camp with the same card it is silky smooth. I am assuming its the lame drivers to blame in OSX.

More on topic, If I got a Sapphire 4890 would I be asking for trouble if I flashed it or used injectors? Also, when snow leopard comes out I am going to nab me that upgrade and I would probably do a clean install, would I need new flash/injectors? Or should I just probably take the safe route and buy a 4870 Apple card and not flash/inject anything.

Cooling is another big issue for me as I hate noise and my GTX285 is really loud under load and quite audible at idle. Is the 4870/4890 cards any quieter or easier to get aftermarket heat sinks?

I have an MSI 4890 that is flashed and runs a treat.

You STILL need a patched kext to make these 100% and so far all STABLE 4890s have been single display.

I'd be MORE than happy to trade you this whisper quiet 4890 for your noisy GTX285.

Eventually the GTX285 will be King...they just need to work on drivers a bit more.

The 285GTX is alot better then the 4890, which in turn is better then the 4870. Why downgrade?

I am just a noise freak. My budget is not a big worry. I blow lots of cash on my computers lol. I wouldn't consider it a downgrade when my GT120 that came stock gets damn near the same FPS when turning fast as my GTX285. I just like the "more" stable environment of an OSX machine and I seem to not have any issues on my 285 as far as stability. It is just that the fan is the only thing I hear in my Mac Pro. The GT120 was just a really low drone in comparison.

How much of an issue would the 4890 be in snow leopard when that comes out?

gtx285 isnt a llot better than 4890

1ghz 4890 can beat gtx285 in half of games

but considering quality of osx nvidia drivers, 4890 is the king:p

You know the 4890 also stutters when turning in WoW? It's not a hardware related thing. Just as much as Dalaran FPS is pretty much capped at 40 no matter system, because of poor game design.

Anyway, 4890 should be even more compatible on Leopard, according to Netkas.

I have stutters in Dalaran on both my 8800GT (obviously slower) and the 4890.
Now, with the 4890 it could be due to the higher settings. It does stutter less then the 8800GT still.

My server (Turalyon, Europe) is a busy server. Dalaran is always crowded.
Meaning **** loads to calculate ;-)

One more confirmation that the molex connectors DO NOT give enough power in the 2008 Mac Pro.

$40 to the ATI Store now after $12 in molex @ Best Buy :(

Odd? Worked fine for me with 3 hard drives and the Optical device.
I switched to the internal cable now which I ordered through the other link somewhere here in the topic.
Got that for less then 20 USD including shipping.

I am using 1 molex, 1 motherboard. Works fine and can still power a extra harddrive.
