WTF people in the know! nothing like leaving a person hanging!

Wrong tone.

Since my 4890 seems to be fine in 10.5.8.....either yours has died or you buggered up the software.

Flashing the EFI 4890 ROM on it gets you the boot screens.

From there it should work in whatever OS (10.5.7, 10.5.8 or 10.6) to display things on screen.

It requires a Netkas-fixed ATI2000.kext to enable the QE/CI.

hello. i've lurked in this thread a couple times over the last few months but just finally registered. i have a 2006 mac pro that i'll be trying a 4890 with in the next week or two. just a question about the ati cables you have to buy separate. i got my mac pro with the x1900xt and it looks to have one of those cables already. should i only have to get 1 or is it a different type and i'll have to get 2?

is buy.com the best place to get the xfx 4890? i plan on flashing it in windows on my bootcamp partition. all i'll need is that kext file to get quartz extreme working after that right? should i install it beforehand or after, or does it even matter?

thanks a lot for all this information. :D

The x1900 uses the exact same cables. You need only 1 more.

I have had no success flashing 4890 inside Windows, I had to boot dos disk.

hmmm, i see. now that is something i'm not familiar with. i don't have access to a PC so this is my only option, pretty much.

I couldn't get it to work on my flashed 4870, either. Something I was hoping we'd be able to get at some point, but no luck thus far. Maybe in the future...but 's trying to leave analog and legacy ports behind as fast as they can.

awesome, thanks. also, i wanted to check if there were any issues with using a CRT monitor. i still use a mitsubishi 22", and i think i remember someone saying there was flickering or something using the dvi -> vga? maybe not. i plan on getting one of those 26" IPS planars later in the year.

4890 flash resolution / power problem

Hi all, I am having a strange problem that I haven't seen so far yet in others.

First off flashed an XFX 4890, and boots up into osx ok. However upon boot up, the screen is stuck at like 1280 x 960. I have a 30" ACD.

I am unable to choose a higher res.

I tried installing the ATIRadeonX2000.kext, via Kext helper, but it didn't seem to change anything.

The weirdest part is that there is a warning message that pops up on the desktop when first booting up saying that the power cables for the graphics card are not properly connected... This warning also appears in windows through bootcamp (however the warning is different, and doesn't even let me boot into windows). I am using the proper ATI cables connected straight to the logic board, and know it's not the connection because having the card in with stock "pc rom" generates no warnings.

This was flashed with "Rom #2" from netkas.

I also have tried the "Rom #1", but that one didn't even boot to grey screen...

Has anyone run into this problem? Also there are a number of people throughout the thread that have had success with flashing xfx's, which rom did you use?

Check this first : XFX 4890 has some various models. You need a reference model not a over-clocked one such as "Black Edition" which requires a 8-pin power cable. The reference model requires 2* 6-pin power cable.

Thanks for the reply. My xfx 4890 is the "regular" one. no overclock. I also think it to be the more current version as it has a black pcb with 2x 6pin. also red dvi ports.

On the box it says version 5.2

Can't figure this out...any help would be appreciated :(

and ofc how did u power your 4890

I have all 4 hd bays populated, plus a 5th hard drive in the lower optical bay via odd sata port. I have no pci cards.

The 4890 is powered via 2 x ATI pcie cables going to the aux power ports on the logic board.

The strange part is that, the power warning window only appears after flashing with rom #2. I tried flashing rom #1, but I just get a black screen, so I can't even test.

On the regular pc rom, no warnings come out in windows.

I was thinking maybe it has something to do with the roms being taken from an MSI card; possibly a higher clock on those? However it seems like a handful of people have had no problems with xfx though...

I will try and attach a screen shot of the warning message when I get home.

I can tell you right now what the problem is.

You will need to craft a ROM for yourself from original PC ROM.

I tried to solve the Single DVI issue on my MSI 4890 by flashing with XFX based ROM. It resulted in me getting that same power message.

So quite possible that XFX used a different power supply circuitry and where the XFX ROM checks for power connection is different from everyne else.

So, try using pipolomo42's method to write an XFX 4890 ROM using the rest of Ntkas ROM #2. May or may not work as the GDDR5 table isn't where it normaly is and I believe Netkas had to reassign a pointer to it. (Rihldinger did same thing for the Holy Grail XFX 4870 ROM)

Thanks for the info, rominator. Will give it a shot. Never wrote my own rom before...but I guess no better time than to try now :p

I seems like the XFX 4890 ZDFC, has gone through a number of version changes... (i.e. going back and forth with 6 pin and 8 pin) perhaps mine while a somewhat current version, may not be a good thing. I guess it's possible the people having success with XFXs maybe had prior versions.

One question though... did when you flashed the XFX rom to your MSI, and the warning appeared, did you also encounter the low resolution problem? Or is that a different issue all together? Thanks again for the help~

Sl 10a432 and dual dvi

anyone have success running a 4890 dual dvi?

apparently all it needs is this update: http://netkas.org/?p=137

I applied the update but it didn't work off the bat. In the time that I could troubleshoot it, I discovered my logic board "ain't what she used to be" so my macpro1,1 is in the shop.

So... I'm thinking about getting the XFX 4870 zhfc because I really need dual dvi and it seems like I wouldn't have to install kexts or anything as 4870 support is built-in.

Just to check, this is the correct pipomolo42 instructions, yes?

https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/7297669/

That's the one.

Trick here is you will need to start with one of Netkas ROMs and I do believe that he moved some things.

You need to be sure that these things line up with the 4890 ROM:

skip=63488 count=49152

That refers to how many spaces in and how long the EFI part of ROM is. Netkas must have modded device id's in 4870 to work for 4890 so I don't know which is easier, using his and checking taht offsets are correct, or starting from Mac OEm and using Pipolomo42's stuff "as is"

well, i was planning on getting an xfx, but now i'm afraid of it not working. i have the same model mac pro, but only 2 hd bays filled. a third relatively soon. maybe i'll get the dual dvi sapphire :/

Maybe an MSI might be better as the rom was made from that... I didn't know sapphire does dual dvi...was this recent?
