Rebooted and i will get a kernel panic telling me to hold the power button.
When i remove the 4890 i can boot again with my 7300GT

Dit i mis anything??

int he flashing instructions it says that vga from dvi2vga doesn't work. i know it's for the 4870 but does that refer to using that adapter for a crt monitor? will this apply to 4890?

ATI Power Cables

I just had to order some of the power cables yesterday (8/18) and did so on svideo.com - I tried the ATI site first but they were listed as out of stock :(

From your previous post, I saw you have both ATY_init and Natit loaded. ATY_init actually has Natit function build inside, this may cause some problem here. You may try remove Natit kext and test again.

Btw just noticed qe/cl is disabled on my mac. 10.5.8 update here so i installed the new QE_CI_Exotic_SL.pkg but... still qe/cl is disabled??? :S

hu-what? any input?

Thanks for your reply sweec.
I removed Natit.kext from /System/Library/Extensions .
My mac boots again but with the 4890 i still get black screen.
Do you have any oher sugestions?

you can bother yourself to read the last page :/

Same issue!

If you look back about a page or so, I posted my problems I was having with the XFX 4890 "regular clock". I am using on a Mac pro 1,1. Power and resolution issues, with the current available rom.

I have exactly the same issue as you and I also have the same Mac Pro model 1,1 with same XFX 4890 card. I get the same errors and I laso have a "jumpy" mouse pointer.

I have tried to catch up how to modify the roms but haven´t fully got the grip. If u succed in getting a ROM that is working I would be very happy if u post it here or share it.

I´ll get back to my Radeon 3870 for now!

So long as the DVI port is a DVI-I, then Yes. :) If it's DVI-D, No. :( Check the card's specs to be sure. ;)

incorrect

The 4870s lack the analog part of DVI-I due to driver issue

SL may have a fix...I will test at some point if nobody else does

No reason to expect 4890 to be any different

I was thinking from a technical standpoint (hardware).

Is this issue common amongst all the tried cards (indicating Apple skipped the Analog section in the drivers), or just some cards (differences in the hardware, i.e. non reference design models)?

All flashed 4870s have this issue...only 1 way to get partial VGA support....run one of the cards with Dual DVI....put a DVI to VGA on BOTH DVIs and you will get working VGA from one output.

The EDID is not sensed so you will get non-standard resolution choices...some monitors may not even bother and thus we don't talk much of this option.

This is due to MDP on retail card....also Apple routinely switches channels for EDID for some unknown reason. (compared to PC cards...Nvidia 5200 and 6800 ROMs required re-routing due to this)

Ouch! That majorly blows. Way to go Apple...

so basically i have to get a new monitor or buy the apple 4870, or will that card have the same issues? really need to get rid of my x1900xt before it burns up for good. :/

Apple 4870 (the one with a SINGLE DVI Port and a MDP port) will have working DVI...they are 512 Meg only.

It MUST be the Apple one, not one you flash, nor a flashed one you buy on Ebay. It has to be the REAL MAC OEM 4870.
