Wouldn't it be a pretty neat idea, if someone could make little packages with the stuff needed for different setups? To make it easier for total noobs....

Yeah, thanks Cindori, I know you're going to post "why don't you do it".... but it's always better if a power user makes a good guide.

If you run 10.5.7, you dont need anything else.

If you run 10.5.8, replace "QE_CI" pkg with this updated
http://rapidshare.de/files/48062862/QE_CI_Exotic_cards_10_5_8.pkg.html

If you run Leopard, replace "QE_CI" pkg with this instead
http://rapidshare.de/files/48139284/QE_CI_Exotic_SL.pkg.html

Then you can just follow the guide on #1.

that is afaik the way to do

i got an ssd on way together with leopard, cant really confirm anything until i get it

people have reported that in SL, the QE_CI needs to be installed a second time, after reboot:

I installed all the proper packages and had it running fine under Leopard. After installation of SL, I used the QE_CI Snow Leopard pkg on Netkas' site. Rebooted with no luck. Tried again and everything is working.

I have a question that I am going to throw into the mix, especially for those contemplating going the injector-route. And this is not a swipe at those who already have, or to netkas who has, by all accounts, worked his butt of developing the injector, but...

What happens if netkas decides not to update his injectors anymore? are you guys going to be stuck on whatever current iteration of OSX that you have? And what happens when newer/better cards come out? the Radeon 5000 series for example, will netkas continue to offer updates for the users of older and older cards? I mean, is there going to come a point several years down the road where netkas will decide to not develop updates to his injectors, and leave the user stuck?

That's why I love my flashed HIS HD4870 512 MB.

We will see when Apple is going to release HD5XXX's :)

seeing as to how its still a pc card and i can always use my mac as a pc later on i'd say that im okay. still though on the mac side if oyu have a 10.5.8 and are without leopard you cant do much with it...

meh.

Still, awesome card and an awesome injection nevertheless. thx netkash.

Perhaps i wasnt Clear, what i meant was in the event that my mac is totally useless and that i am left with only the option to buy a new (mac) card which is going to be an expensive repair, i will instead turn said mac pro into a windows until a few years pass and my 4890 gets old, THEN ill just go buy a new mac since my mac pro is already 3years old add another 4and hey i guess ill deem myself lucky/pro for using a piece of technology for more than 5 years.

But in all honesty i'd rather install linux than windows. That is assuming im sick of video games...

Ps:hey my first forum post from an iphone :)

The radeon 5000 must come for Mac aswell as we need the OSX drivers.
If it comes for Mac (or any other card for that matter) it will be around Q1 probably, and if Netkas would stop updating TODAY I would only be stuck with Snow Leopard 10.6.0 for a couple of months. No problems with me tbh...

Also the injectors have not yet needed any update. It is only the QE_CI accelleration that needs update. I don't know about the procedure to write an updated version, but I do think there is atleat one person that would be able to do it, should netkas stop.

OK, So I've tried two different Sapphire 4890 cards now, one with 1GB and one with 2GB of VRAM and they both do the exact same thing. As soon as the system powers up the card fan runs at full speed and neither Windows, GPU-Z, Mac, anything will recognize that there's a card there at all. I've got a 2009 Mac Pro with the Mac 4870 card works fine, and I'm using the two power cables that came with the system that power the 4870...

I did notice that the 2GB 4890 has one 6pin and one 8pin power connector... can I use the two 6 pin power connectors in the machine or do I need something different. Some people seem to say the sapphire cards don't work in the Mac Pro but many others seem to have it working. I just can't even get to the point where I could TRY flashing it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Sapphire 4890 works great flashed and non flashed to me.

OK, what the heck? I can't figure out what I'm missing. I restarted in WinXP, installed the new drivers, took out my 4870, and installed the 4890. Boot up in Windows again because I was under the impression I had to flash it, but GPU-Z doesn't even see the card and the 4890 fan never stops running at full speed.... I have SnowLeopard installed and that doesn't see anything either in System Profiler...

Did I miss a step, or did you just plug in your 4890 and startup and it worked?

My Sapphire also has the 6 and 8 pin. I used the normal 6 pin power cables from ati.com. When dealing with the 8 pin...I don't know if it matters, but I used the 6 pins closest to the 6 pin plug. Meaning when looking at the card while installed, the two farthest pins are unused.

I haven't done anything to it yet. I'm not exactly clear on what the injectors are. I downloaded the SnowLeopard package from netkas, but I was under the impression I had to boot up in windows first and flash the card. What did you do to get your card working?

Yeah same here... the card certainly seems to be getting power, but is not responsive. I've tried it with and without any displays connected to it ( i have an NVidia card in another slot so I can still use the system). The 4890 replaced by 4870 in the bottom slot.

I'm just not sure how I'm supposed to flash OR inject? it if nothing will see the card.

I'd be very happy if I could get it working!

Thanks!

Use this guide right here to flash the card

http://web.me.com/jacobcroft/4870Flash/4870Flash.html

But when you are ready to flash remember to have only the 4890 installed.

Im talking about only for Sapphire 4890 1GB. I don't know if 2GB Sapphire will work.

I don't think I'd have any trouble flashing it, but the GPU-Z utility doesn't even see the card in windows... and I've installed the ATI drivers that came with the 4890 in win xp. So I can't get to the first step!

I thought it was a bad card, that why I sent it back and got another one and the new one does the same thing! It's like it's not even plugged in except that I know it's not the slot since my Mac 4870 works fine, and the 4890 is definitely getting power and fans..

I followed the instructions given in the initial post of the thread https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/713428/ and installed the SL package from Netkas' site last.

That's where I think the problem is. The card's I have will not boot in windows at all...

Anyone else seen this issue? I got the Sapphire card because it has the displayport connector and I've got Apple's 24" cinema displays with miniDisplay Ports, so I need the displayPort... There's an adapter you can use to change miniDisplayPort to standard displayPort. The sapphire cards are the only ones with the displayPort as far as I can see... :(

Well here is one for all the board experts...

I attempted to reinstall , using the injector method my XFX 4890. I goes into OS X but I get NO 3D acceleration... dock and expose is choppy. I have tried reinstalling the Exotic cards for SL file 5 times in a row with multiple reboots and still nothing... suggestions?

Did you install update 10.6.1? I completely forgot about the rule "DONT UPGRADE TILL NETKAS DOES" and now I have no COD4 :(

That was all BEFORE 10.6.1 Im done with injection and flashing.. Apple wins :( Sad thing Is that I have a GTX 285 also.. OS X performance is so abysmal that I dont even want to use it... wtf..

this time you could use patch pkg for 10.6.0 and then upgrade to new one when its released.

But i already done new patch, check out netkas.org

Netkas, I reported this on the comments on your site, but i'd figure i'd post it here too to see if anyone else is getting same things as me. First, Thanks for the new package. We all appreciate it.

I have a flashed 4890 ZDFC and I'm getting horizontal lines up and down the screen when launching COD4... this is after upgrading to 10.6.1 and installing your new pkg. Any thoughts?

Trouble with 10.6.1

Hi guys,

I've been following this forum for awhile now and ran into my first issue I've not been able to solve so I thought I'd toss it out to the wiser Mac guys for some help.

I have the ATI Raedon HD 4890 card in my Mac Pro and it's been working great for the past several months, until 10.6.1. I installed the QE CI patch prior to the update and everything seemed to be running just fine until I tried to open up WoW and got the "unable to start up 3D acceleration" message. So, I reinstalled the 10.6.1 QE CI patch again (as this has magically fixed things in the past), still no dice.

I posted on Netkas forum about it and he had me use OpenGL Extension Viewer and check it from there. It was there I noticed that under the "Extensions" tab my Renderer was listed as "Apple Software Renderer". It's my understanding that this should be reading my graphics card (after trying it with the 7300 card and having it displaying correctly in the OpenGL), so it seems to me that this may be the issue. What confuses me is that Apple System Profiler recognizes the 4890 card.

I went back and tried reinstalling everything from page 1 over and then all the QE CI patches and am right back to where I was when I started. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
