Hi guys,

I've been following this forum for awhile now and ran into my first issue I've not been able to solve so I thought I'd toss it out to the wiser Mac guys for some help.

I have the ATI Raedon HD 4890 card in my Mac Pro and it's been working great for the past several months, until 10.6.1. I installed the QE CI patch prior to the update and everything seemed to be running just fine until I tried to open up WoW and got the "unable to start up 3D acceleration" message. So, I reinstalled the 10.6.1 QE CI patch again (as this has magically fixed things in the past), still no dice.

I posted on Netkas forum about it and he had me use OpenGL Extension Viewer and check it from there. It was there I noticed that under the "Extensions" tab my Renderer was listed as "Apple Software Renderer". It's my understanding that this should be reading my graphics card (after trying it with the 7300 card and having it displaying correctly in the OpenGL), so it seems to me that this may be the issue. What confuses me is that Apple System Profiler recognizes the 4890 card.

I went back and tried reinstalling everything from page 1 over and then all the QE CI patches and am right back to where I was when I started. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have the VERY same exact issue. The card simply does not work anymore. Netkas? ANyone? what is the issue?

try to run this command in terminal:

sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000.kext /System/Library/Extensions

it will forcesystem to update caches, then wait one min and reboot

Gave this a shot, still no change yet :(

Any other ideas, or information you need from me that could help figure this out?

Possible to overclock pc4890_2.rom ?

Netkas, would it be possible to edit the pc4890_2.rom you posted? If so using what?

If that is not advisable, could you post a version of the working rom that is nicely overclocked for the OS X side of things?

I finally got my flashed XFX 4890 working with the new 10.6.1 QE update. Now I would like to push it in OS X

So is it still safe to use the original ROM flash packages that netkas.org has on it, so use in Snow Leopard (paired with QE patch)?

My older graphics card is unstable, so installing that, then installing SL, then installing the new card again, might not be an option. I'd prefer to not dig into my comp again.

So I'd like to just use the 4890 rom with a stick, flash it, and it should be all good yes?

would not recommend higher clock then 900 on sapphire cards

atleast mine starts giving artefacts on 910+

I just finished installing Snow Leopard on my Intel G2 SSD and flashing my Sapphire 4890 inside OSX with a overclocked ROM.

Thanks to pipmolo and netkas, a PC 4890 can now be converted to work in OSX in under 60 seconds.

You can find the flashing guide here:
http://boeglin.org/blog/index.php?entry=entry090918-031702

And all the software you need, together with roms, in this neat little package:
http://groths.se/4890FLASH.ZIP

There are two roms included.
One is standard clocked to 850, one is overclocked by Zepharus to 950.
You should verify in windows with rivatuner and furmark if your card can handle the overclock.

Also included is the QE_CI pkg for 10.6.1, this you install either before orafter you are done flashing the card, but remember it is for the 10.6.1 update.

Oh, and dual dvi is working! :D:D

Have fun!

I have the sapphire non-oc. It runs great in wow and osx with the OC rom. But I haven't stressed it yet in like Crysis. But there should be no problem to go ahead and try the OC rom for yourself. Should it be too high, you will start getting artifacts a long time before the card is in any danger.

I know that I am jumping the gun here, but what kind of job is it to port the upcoming (tomorrow?) 5870 to mac?
Is it a few week "quickie" or is counted in months?

So damn eager to update the my old 7300gt here...

The only reason we are able to use a PC 4890 is because the 4890 can use the 4870 drivers, provided by apple.

So yeah, to get a 5870 working, we have to wait for a Mac Edition to be released.

History tells us it will be atleast 6 months after the PC release.

ALSO an addition: the 5870 will be expensive and the 4890 is REALLY a great gc to use so... will it be worth it...?

DO NOT BUY THAT CARD. Let my pain be your benefit. I tried that card first, in fact TWO of them.. it does not flash or inject. Stick with a standard 4890. I bought the XFX 4890 and it works great

Yes....only buy standard clock cards.

I bought the XFX 4890 as well (had to buy two of them after the first fan upgrade failed....)

I had the ROM flashed and now I am getting dual DVI output in Snow Leopard with XFX 4890 card.

thanks cindori, ive flashed mine also just now and was a breeze. However im getting too much fan noise with the 4890oc.ROM on my desktop, when i try to run a 3d game it sounds like a plane landing! :O is this normal? :S

also mine says that the drivers aren't installed :S

Im getting 0 noise. What card do you have? Post a picture.
As for the drivers, netkas confirmed sometime ago that the first motmotthingie there is actually the sound chip. Did you remove the injectors? Sounds like you did something wrong, or are using a different card.

EDIT: Nvm saw ur card on blog. I would try a fresh SL install on a 2nd drive or something, and see if it helps.

hum im not sure how i can remove the injectors. I believe i havent removed them. How would i do that?

edit: ive removed ATY_init.kext from system/library/extentions but im not sure if that was the whole process of uninstalling the injector...
