flashing benefits:

you get the grey apple boot screen / boot loader

you don't depend on the injector, you can move your card to any Mac pro

you can use overclock rom, get more performance

you can run OSX install discs when using 4890, with injector, you can't

flashing is quite easy, see page 1
but you should get backup of your rom first
(you might find that on google)
i believe no one has tried the xxx yet

@ Cindori

How are you powering your Accelero Twin Turbo? Through the molex extension or some other means?

Thank you for the flash upgrade!

I want to thank you again for the flash update! I have a renewed my love for my 1.1 mac pro. The thing that hurt it for me was the video card and I refused to pay 400+ for older mac flashed video cards. I had just about given up until I read this thread.

NOTE*** to reiterate Cindori's post, FLASH THE CARD. After installing the flash using the Overclock package, after a few reboots, I got the GSOD and had to reformat my entire HD. I was able to complete the install, with the SL disc, using just the 4890 video card because it had already been flashed before the crash. When SL was up and running again, the 4890 was already recognized, just had to install the exotic package.

MY CARD (for the compatibility list):
XFX 489A-ZDF7 stock
used the overclock package...not good results, the fan was running hard at ALL TIMES and was very loud...
I reverted to the normal package... SILENCE almost as if using the stock card, the fan runs great during game play.

Thanks, I'll update the list. Would you provide a link to the exact card (if you find it)? I want to avoid confusion so I want as many specifics as I can find. Thanks again.

Hello all,

I finally installed my 4890 and flashed it - first I bought the 4870 but that was the "inferior" new version so I decided to use the 4890.

If someone is interested: I used the following card now and it works perfectly (OS X and Windows 7).

Thanks for the flashing tools...

Hi yuser,

Good news but it's in german only ... are they still available ?

It seems that they ship only to Germany, Licht, Austrich and Switzerland non ? not to France

availability

Hello,

I am sorry but it looks like they only ship to business customers in the EU - France is on the list but the shipping costs are according to their web page 49,99 Euro. So I think this is not a good (cheap) option for you.

I think I got the last one from them which was on stock. After my order the status switched to "available in 10+ workdays".

The card seems to be rare on the online shops now...

Hello there!
I would like to refresh my MacPro 2.1 Quad-Core 3 GHz (Clowertown)
with a new 4890.

So my question is this. Are this the very same card as Cindori used since
there are some differences in the graphics.

http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/236698/sapphire-hd-4890-1gb-gddr5-pci-e.html#tab:info

Sorry for nob question, just like to double check things like that.

If this is the one, well bb 8800 GT.

P.S.

If i have radeon X1900 XT can i use cable i get in that kit or do i still
need to buy extra cable?

Thanks in advance!

if you are running ATI cards you need to take them out during flashing, more on this on "People Running Secondary ATI cards" link on first page.

Didn't see this until now.....but this card will not work as previously discussed.

Which doesn't make much sense. This is simply a stock card with a different cooler. The Toxic is overclocked. In other words, the Toxic should not work and the Vapor should, but we seem to have the exact opposite happening here.

It might just be a versioning issue, but without more information it seems very odd. Which is too bad, because I wanted the Vapor.

Another victim of an XFX ZDFC here. Picked one up awhile back based on a couple of early successes but it never worked... I could get it to boot as a secondary card but never as the primary. Grabled Apple logo and horizontal cutting as mentioned in other posts. As secondary card OSX always complained about power cables not plugged in properly. It went back to The Egg.

I have been trying to dig up one of the reference cards for a couple of weeks without much luck. A couple on Ebay went for over $200. Finally found a post by FireSlash regarding this card:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...4161276&cm_re=HIS_4890-_-14-161-276-_-Product

It came in this morning and I was disappointed to unpack it and find that even though the model was the same it didn't appear to be a reference card by the looks of the PCB anyway. The PCB is dark blue, not red and there is an 8 and 6 pin for power not 6 and 6 as in prior versions.

I have a 7300GT in slot 1 currently and since I had it in hand I decided to give it a go.

1. Install card in slot 3 and use both 6-PIN from MB for power using ATI cables. (As I read on the 8pin the last two are just ground anyway)
2. Reinstall Exotic Card drivers per original post for good measure
3. Use 4890 Standard rom for flash.
4. Reboot

What do you know.... it works like a charm.

After the reboot I didn't get any messages about power cables and System profiler shows it as a 4890 with 1024MB!!!

Finally, I put it in slot 1 and removed the 7300 completely. I am typing this on it now.

This is on a Mac Pro 1,1 Dual 2.66, 12GB

Can post pics too if requested.

I'm also on a MP 1,1 and see that newegg.ca has these cards, so I'm EXTREMELY interested in your setup.

Can you be more specific what you did with the cabling? Do you mean that you already had the ATI cables from your last attempt? (I think that is what you mean).

If so, I am considering pulling power from the drive bays with a 4-pin extension instead - I can get them at any of the stores around here. Did the HIS come with a 4-to-8 pin adaptor in the box?

I used the ATI power cables purchased from here:

http://shop.ati.com/product.asp?sku=3280778

To be very clear you need 2 of these.

I read specifically that the Molex connectors from the DVD drives may not provide enough power so be careful.

The card came with a 6 pin and 8 pin to molex connectors.

Been using it most of the day now and it is like a dream!

This is VERY strange. I just ordered this exact same card (also from newegg, as a matter of fact...the exact one that is linked above) a few days ago, and it came in today (same day as the above post). See this post. Mine has 6 and 6 pin for power (not 8 and 6 pin as above post states). Also, my PCB is not dark blue, it is the reference color.

Just curious, did you order from Newegg? If so, then people are getting different versions of this card even when ordering from the exact same link. Although I'm glad to see your version worked. I should know in a few days if my version works when my ATI cables come in.

Here we go, check these pics. My thought is that these are just now changing PCB design... the XFX I got earlier (couple of weeks ago) also had this darker green/blue PCB.

I did order form Newegg.... just yesterday so this may be a newer batch.

I ordered mine on Thursday 10/15 and it arrived today. It is definitely different in terms of PCB color and power connection. I'll take pics and post soon. I'm awaiting for my ATI cables to arrive before I can test if mine works. Expect to hear from me again soon...

I also ordered the HIS card yesterday, from NewEgg, and it arrived this afternoon. Mine is the dark blue PCB version with the 6 and 8 pin connections. Will post more once I can confirm it to be working.
