Hey mate,
Thanks.![]()
It is DVI.
Thanks for all this great work.
After futzing about with my XFX 4890 card for a few weeks I sent it back. It was obviously never going to work as a Mac card for me. Darn fast in Windows though! Now that things have moved along a bit I'm going to give it another try, but I very much want to get a compatible card as my time for FAWNRR (floundering about with no real results) is limited. Here is what I'm looking at. The first two look to be the most likely candidates. They appear to match your pictures in the initial post:
http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Rade...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1259621246&sr=8-1
http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Rade...3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1259621246&sr=8-3
Other possibilities which might match:
http://www.amazon.com/XFX-HD489AZDF...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1259621246&sr=8-2
http://www.amazon.com/PowerColor-Ra...?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1259621354&sr=8-19
I would simply go and look around a computer store until I found what I wanted, unfortunately there are zero real computer stores anywhere near me (closest is Micro Center in Chicago, just over 3 hours away). Best Buy is the closest I can get, and it doesn't carry anything "high end," so their stock stops with the 4870 series. Idiots.
So, which of the cards above should I go for?
Alternately, if anyone happens to know of a reseller / card which is compatible, please just post a link to it!
Thanks again!
Yes. Well this card have DVI, DP and HDMI ports. Are you using a 4890 with DisplayPort?
No. Mine 30 Display is connected directly in to the DVI port. And the DP to DVI adapter is running the 30"?

To panjandrum and Ljohnson72.
I would recommend Sapphire New Edition as well since there is few
of them running flawlessly.

peloche you're a genius. Thanks so much! I take it that the "256 MB" in the Apple Video Hardware Information is normal...? Everywhere else it seems to say 1024MB. Thanks again... to where would you like donations etc?

I just wanted to chime in.
Recently, my Apple-issued ATI 4870 died, so I bought the XFX ATI Radeon HD 4890 (1GB) from Best Buy tonight.
I popped it in my First Gen Mac Pro (1,1) and flashed it with ATI Flashing Tool.
All is well. It's working great. It's not INSANELY better than the 4870 (at least not with Call of Duty 4), but you can tell a difference. I can't believe that with a 1GB card, you still can't get 60fps constantly on the Mac with shadows turned on. Hmm..
Anyways. This card ROCKS in Windows! My 8800GT was okay, but this card doesn't stutter at all when playing games in Windows.
Conclusion: It's an awesome card for Mac OS X, but it's way better in Windows.
yes, and yes.
download 10.6.3 and at the same time download new ati flashing tool
when the 10.6.3 is installed, patch for 10.6.3 with ati flashing tool (either before or after reboot)
done
only difference between apple graphic cards and pc graphic cards:
some extra lines of code in firmware and a apple on the box.
oh and twice as big price tag.
no the card will not hurt your system
What's the deal with it showing an extra card?
take a look at the screenshot on the right. It shows two 4890's.
