yep dvi-vga does not work

remember we are hitchhiking on 4000 drivers in OSX, which are meant for 1 dvi + 1 mdp, so we are lucky dvi works at all on 2nd port.

this has been left out pretty much but for the simple reason that no one bothers to run VGA displays for such a beast like the MacPro

wait for your dell and it will probably work (if its dvi)

now added info in main post, "what works and what doesnt"

Now it's much more clear. I can't image the vga driver thing.
It's true "no one bothers to run VGA displays for such a beast like the MacPro". I'll try with the dell.
Sorry for the waste of time and thanks.

Cindori, Thanks for your answer, it does not work either if I have initial card in slot 1 and ATI on other. Mac is in fault after the first "boing" :)

This is what I though about trying to flash in on a PC, my challenge is to find a PC ;) will check with my Neighbor.

Thanks for the answer.

Sapphire 4870 2gb question

I'm sure this has been asked before, so apologies. I have a 2006 mac pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.2. I have the stock nvidia 7300 gt. I'm looking for the cheapest 2gb card that this will work with. I found this card for $200.

Is there a cheaper/better solution out there? Is the 4890 that big of a difference?

I checked the roms zip folder and the picture looked the same, I just wanted to be absolutely sure before buying it.

Thanks!

Thanks, I'll go for a 1 gb card then. This seems like a good deal--would it work?

(Sorry for the cut and paste--it wasn't loading as a click).

what size display are you using?
using dvi?

tried reconnecting after boot?

tried both ports?

osx version?

card works in windows?

OK, I just re-installed the "newnatit", shutdown, swapped cards, and rebooted with only ONE monitor attached.

I didn't get anything on the display, so I switched it to the other port, and still nothing, and tried each one more time, just in case. I then did the same with the other monitor, and had no luck.

4890 stopped functioning all of sudden

MacPro 3,1 HIS 4890 1GB (H4891G)

I was playing WoW and in the middle of a boss fight my computer just turned itself off.

When I pressed the power button to restart the 4890 was running its fan at full speed and OS would not start. I have had this running smooth since the last update.

Any ideas?

How did you power it?

Before I sold my 4870x2, it would crash out on explosions, etc in Crysis. I had been powering it from the 2 Apple power connectors with a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter.

I finally solved crash issue by moving one of the connections to the Superdrive Molex...so half power came from optical drive, half from the intended power connection.

Solved issue instantly.

I am using the 6-pin to 6-pin power cable sold by ATI.

Just surprised as I have not had any issues for the last 2 months running this way almost 24/7.

graphic cards do crap out... even in macs...

if you have a PC to check, do it. or just send back to store.

Hey guys, i have one question.

Finally i got Apple 30“ display. And here is the thing. When i boot in os X,
after booting when is the time for desktop to show up my screen goes black,
and looks like display goes to sleep.
To wake up the display i need to press power button on my mac to put to
sleep whole system and than wake the whole thing back up. And when i do
so the fans on MP goes to max for about 30 seconds and after that everything
is back to normal, and everything is working perfectly.

I do not have such a problem in window 7. BTW, this card really can pull
maxed out MW2 at resolution of 2560x1600, that’s just crazy.

10.6.2 in mine system, never before experienced any problems with Apple 23”.
I hope there is a solution for this coz it’s a bit annoying to do whole
protocol like that just to boot and i don’t like how MP sounds at 2500 rpm’s.

However if that cannot harm to my MP i can live with it until ATI 5000
comes out. :D

Thanks.

Hi mate,

Congrats, is it DVI or DP ?

i'm going to remove my 20", leave only 30" connected and reboot, i'll keep you inform.

I did the following:

1 - shut down Mac Pro (MP)
2 - disconnect DP/DVI adaptor with 20" attached
3 - reboot with only 30" attached to DVI
4 - boot went ok but at time of logging 30" turns black
5 - connect DP/DVI adaptor with 20" attached, then 30" and 20" come back normal together.

IMHO is nor a matter of PCIe 1 or 2, neither MP revision.
Never forget that we are using a "bricolage" to make this card working.
You could buy a DP/DVI adaptor and use your 2 screens as i'm doing, waiting for a better solution, 2 screens is comfortable :)

Can you try one more thing for me please? If it is not a problem, could you
connect only 30” again, but this time using adapter to DP port?

Done the following:

1 - shut down MP
2 - disconnect 30" from DVI port and connect it to DP/DVI adaptor port
3 - reboot
4 - 30" is working with 1280 x 800
5 - connect 20" onto DVI port 1680 x 1050
6 - connect 30" to DVI and 20" to DP/DVI adaptor, all come back to normal, 30" 2560 x 1600 and 20" 1680 x 1050
