Cindori,

I tried the test ati flashing tool and got a flash complete message. The icon that appears on the dock during flashing is only there for a second or two. After that it takes maybe 10-15 seconds before the flash complete message appears. To be able to boot back into OS X, I have to take out the 4890, reinstall 10.6.2, and then put the 4890 back in.

This time, during the installation of QE_CI, I got a kernel panic. I have booted back into windows on the 4890 and here is the firmware from GPU-Z:

I compared it with the file I uploaded earlier using winmerge and they are identical.

Again, thanks for the help :)

His 4890 (h489ft1gp)

Hi all,

Okay, over the past 8 hours of flashing and re-flashing this card, I've learned an assload about this model card (HIS 4890 H489FT1GP). This is all on a Mac Pro 1,1 (first series from 2006).

First of all, when booting into 10.5.8 Natit (installed from ATI Flashing Tool 1.2) allowed me to boot into "safe mode". Otherwise I got nothing but black screen (this I did not understand before). So holding shift down when booting made it so that I could see everything at 1280x1024, 32-bit color, and run the ATI flashing tool and flash the card and the display worked great by itself as long as I was in safe mode.

Next, the power supply: This card has 2 connectors; one 8-pin and one 6-pin. I plugged the 6-pin from the mo-bo into the 4890. Then I plugged into the card the 8-pin to 2 molex split cable (included with the card) and connected only ONE molex plug of that cable into the next splitter, which went to the next splitter connected to the optical drive bay power supply. While this worked in the Mac, I could not boot into a Windows XP boot camp volume (if it matters, it is WinXP 32-bit which occupies an entire 1 NTFS volume hard drive). Trying to boot into WinXP resulted in a black screen with a flashing red text message stating "You do not have one of the power supplies connected... please see setup guide" etc. It just flashes and flashes for eternity. Only thing to do is hold the power button down for ~5 sec. to shut the machine down.

To boot into XP, I had to do the following:
1) Plug the 6-pin cable from the mo-bo into the card.
2) Plug the 8-pin to 2 molex plug cable into the 4890 card (this cable is included with the card).
3) Plug BOTH of the 2 split molex ends from the 8-pin cable into the first splitter. So for lack of a picture, it was:
4890 8-pin socket => 2 molex -> 2 molex -> 1 molex -> one molex plug from the splitter cable plugged into the optical bay.

What this means is that, if you are upgrading from a card that uses the 6-pin plug from the mobo (e.g., ATI HD 3870), then you cannot boot into Windows with the 4890 as the display if the other card is powered.

NOTE: This also eliminated the Mac's "you do not have one of the power cables connected..." errors on startup!

Then the ROMs. Of the 3 HIS 4890 ROMs I tried, the most recent "mac modified.rom" version (from 11-04-2009) seems to be the most stable, but lists the GPU/Memory clock speeds as 850/975 MHz, respectively, instead of the 900/1000 MHz that this card is supposed to be.

The "mac modified - Overclocked.ROM" ROM from Sept. 21 lists them at a closer 880/999 MHz, BUT the fan was in a very fast mode nearly all the time. It slowed down from the initial boot ultra-speed (the fastest) but it took some time and really seemed to be exercising the fan throughout.

Then finally the Oct. 2 "mac modified - Normalclocked" ROM reported as 1 Hz in Open GL extensions viewer in Windows, 0 MB memory, and said "N/A" next to the DirectX version (the other 2 above correctly noted 9.0c). It also didn't recognize the ATI drivers/Catalyst control center.

Lastly -- and this is the most important -- I get no Core Image or Quartz Extreme love at all. I tried QE_CI for OS 10.5.8 through 10.6.2 (yup, I tried all of them) from version 1.2 of the ATI flashing tool. I even tried 10.5.7 from ATI flashing tool vers. 1.0 (seems to be gone in v. 1.2). On all 3 ROMs tested, the below image is the result. I also re-applied the Mac OS 10.5.8 Combo updater several times. Still no luck. I stated in an earlier post that due to my RAID solution I am stuck at 10.5.8 for the time being... attached are some GPU-Z images that show the different ROMs, as well as the ROMs I tried, and also the original ROM from this card that I managed to back up while connected via the ATI 3870 (RV790.bin is the 4890 ROM from GPU-Z). Can anyone help?

You might try ordering an X1900 PCIe power cable from ATI. That's what I did. It takes a while, but it works great.

When I powered my card through the optical bay I had no extension cables so I had to take the bay out and just keep the case open. It sucked, but it worked.

Here's a bad picture to show you what it looks like:

@cindori

i ordered a powercolor 4890 pcs+. this card is oc -> 950/1050. if i flash this card with the roms you provide, will it still have these speeds or just the regular (850/975) ones?

thx

Thanks Peloche :),

I will give it a try later today. I am curious as to why I get an error when flashing the board? Is it because of the ROM file I am using or is it because the flashing utility can not flash the board?

I also want to mention that I was unable to do anything without have all boards powered. Leaving either the 8800 or the 4890 without power caused problems from the computer not booting to hanging when running the UBCD.

Thanks again for all the help

Tried again using the ROM provided by Peloche. No go. Using 1.2 and the test versions of the ati flashing utility. I noticed that the icon on the dock that appears during flashing is really only displayed for about 1 second. Just long enough to show up and go away. Is this the program that does the actual flashing and should it be in the dock longer?

I am beginning to think that my card is somehow newer and is not supported by the flashing utilities yet?

I havent tried putting the card in a different slot. Would that make a difference?

well a new rom does not help since the flashing does not work, of course

when the icon only appears for 2-5 sec, it either means
rom was identical to firmware, flashing aborted
compatible card not found, flashing aborted

try another way to flash. im out of ideas.

here you go jdhorner

http://groths.se/atiflashingtool/newXFX.zip

please say what model no your card is

Great! I'll be able to try this in about 5 hours when I get home. As far as the model number, here is what I have available at the moment. I can get more information if this isn't what you need when I get home to see the card and box itself.

XFX HD 4890 850M 1GB DDR5 DUAL DVI TV PCI-E
Product Code: HD-489X-ZSFC

(I also have the serial number and registration code, but I believe you do not need those)

Josh

HI all,

Sorry for my english.
Cidori thanks for the help you and Peloche are giving in this thread.
Well I bought an Xfx radeon HD 4890 (HD-489X-ZSFL; HD48990 850M 1GB DDR5 DUAL DVI TV PCI-E ver 1.3) and I installed both Injector and Natit plus the QE_CI_Exotic_cards_10.6.1 but even system profiler show the card perfectly there is no way the display will work with it (always black screen).
So I tried using your ATI Flashing Tool with the rom you gave to jdhorner (his card looks the same but I his card has ZSFC and mine ZSFL), well it not works.
So I restart the mac in bootcamp with only the ati card in and use GPU-Z to take the firmware, hope it is good again to get a rom for the tool.
Thanks for your time

Success

:D

I got my board flashed! I used version 3.73 of atiflash.exe in DOS instead of the current 3.75 version and it worked! I flashed the board using the H0M3R_EFIROMFX.rom.zip provided by Peloche.

I do get the power cable warning message but thats normal I suppose and once my monitor said the resolution while booting into OS X invalid. I just turned the Dell SP2309W monitor on/off a couple of times and the screen came back up.

I was gonna just get an apple 4870, but $350 just seemed too much.

Thanks everyone here for the help!

What display do you have? Tried reconnectingnafter boot? Tried only 1 display?

Now I'm with a 17" by Hyundai, this one ( couse my 20" cinema display just died and I waiting for a new dell) and I tried only with it (works under windows in bootcamp removing the nvidia card)

I tried also disconneting an reconecting on both dvi ports after the boot but nothing, only the nvidia ports work.

That's badluck.

ooopsss I flashed my card ATI 4890 new edition with a wrong ROM "XFX_ZSFL.zip" found on a thread discussion. but now when trying to boot the Mac I get the 'boing" signal and "boing" again etc.... when the card is in slot 1

When I put the card on different slot I got a "boing" and the system is doing nothing, it's like a hang :(

Is there a way to fix this !!!!

help will be very much appreciated.

 lol

Yes the monitor has a vga port and it is connected with a vga-dvi cable.
So is this the problem? Couse with the nvidia that display works well.

Really, really thanks again for the help you are giving.

yep dvi-vga does not work

remember we are hitchhiking on 4000 drivers in OSX, which are meant for 1 dvi + 1 mdp, so we are lucky dvi works at all on 2nd port.

this has been left out pretty much but for the simple reason that no one bothers to run VGA displays for such a beast like the MacPro

wait for your dell and it will probably work (if its dvi)

Wind06: have you tried booting with your old mac card in slot1 and the 4890 in slot 2?

if that works, you can make bootcd in windows and use it to reflash

if it doesnt work, you need a PC and also a bootcd to reflash.

now added info in main post, "what works and what doesnt"
