use "How to get help" from original post ;)

Sorry about that, I didn't think to include the other info in my original post.

Mac Pro:

4,1

Graphics card:

ATI Radeon Sapphire Vapor-x HD4890 1G GDDR5 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102841)

Does the card work in Windows?

Yes

Picture of your graphic card:

I'm going to link to the picture animefuntv posted because it's the exact same packaging and card.

Name of rom you flashed with:

I've tried the mac modified that came in the ROM zip, the ROM posted for animefuntv and the ROM posted for bradipo. Right now it is flashed with the ROM for bradipo and the card is recognized by the system, but does not output to the display.

Thanks for the help!

What screens are you using? Did you try all ports? Did you try to reconnect display after boot? Do you have your original rom? What OS are you on? Dump current rom and upload for me.

Upgrade for Xmas

Hi a big thanks to everyone who has contributed to this info. I own a January 2008 2 x 2.8Ghz Mac Pro and am seriously considering getting 4890XFX graphic card and flashing it, the big downer for me would be that I cant use it while connected to my HDTV via a dvi to vga connector. So have I read this correctly.

"Vga does not work (VGA monitor using VGA-DVI adapter) in OSX, Windows should be ok"

Is this saying that it doesn't work in OSX but does in Windows.

oh wow, this thread has become like an encyclopedia! Also a new way to flash the 4890.

I salute you with the upmost respect cindori! also netkas for his undoubtly irreplaceable dev. ob the efi.

Anyways back to topic ive been using the 4890 sapphire like a charm since august when this thread just started out and flashed it etc.

I'm wondering how i might be able to use a second 4890 with my mac. Not for flashing mind you... would i need an external power source? if so at what specs?

You'd have to draw power from the optical bay, unless you're not already using the PCIe ports on the motherboard.

the second graphics card is assuming i have a 4890 already installed. so yeah ive used up all the motherboard power slots ( there are 2 on my mac pro gen 1.1 not sure about the later models )

ive considered using the dvd slots molex cables for power but thats potentially harmful for the card.

My sig for molex info.

I'm torn between wether its safe or not, some people say yes and some say no. Myself I had it running like that for a couple o months atleast. Then went 1 apple mobo cable and 1 molex just to be sure.

ray_uk:

VGA works Windows, but not OSX. simple as that ;)
if your tv has HDMI ports, buy a DVI>HDMI cable instead :)

Your card should have HDMI port, that means you only need HDMI cable.
If not, Cindori told you which adapter to purchase. ;)

10.6.2 question

Can one of you regulars verify that the 4890 cards seem to work better under 10.6.2? I have an xfx 4890 that I would like to make work, and have run in to some issues, just wanted to see what would be the most ideal OS situation to be in.

Great progress has been done

Ok, so here I'm back.

I followed Cindori's advice. I calmed down. :D Then I studied that jacobcroft link (http://web.me.com/jacobcroft/4870Flash/4870Flash.html). The information you can get there was not exactly what I needed, but at least sufficiently understandable for me to get the right software in the right places, start Windows and prepare a fully functional DOS boot CD. I'd never have thought that possible ! So, thanks for your patience.

Flashing the ROM of my Vapor-X with DOS was quite easy once I had that CD, as expected. I reluctantly removed my X1900XT from slot 1, placed the Vapor-X in its stead and rebooted. Windows wanted once more Vapor-X drivers, installed them and was content. MacOS 10.6.2 also accepted the new card. I then used Cindoris ATI Flashing Utility to install the QE_CI business. But Quartz does still not work; VCL doesn't accept any file format anymore, the QuickTimeReader uses a lot of CPU power to read videos, and the ATI Flashing Tool continues to tell me that Quartz Extreme is not enabled. What am I missing here ?

Thanks once more for all your help ! This time, special thanks to kbonnel for his exhaustive link list.

it works fine in all SL os versions, but I believe it got OpenCL support in 10.6.1.

I am running 10.5.8, I have the software to upgrade to 10.6. I downloaded the latest atiflash earlier this week. I flashed the card succesfuly(?) the first time but osx rebooted into a different desktop screen. I then tried the process again and my mac pro early 2008 would not boot with video and i could not put my old vid card back in and All is well have backup of original rom going to reflash it with that an try again.

XFX 4890-ZSFR v3.1

Cindori,
First sorry I didn't make my second post more clear. Appreciate your input.

OS version
10.6.2
Mac Pro early 2008 2,1
video card xfx 4890-zsfr v3.1
ati flash version 1.2

installed ati flash tool, received expected result until I reboot after installing the qe_ci pkg.

I have tried the following ROMS
the XFX rom included with your tool
EFI_XFX_ZSFR_4890.rom from here on the forums
EFIROMFX

When I use the ROM in the ATIflash tool I can get to the computer using vnc, when I flash with any of the other ROM's I am unable to get to the computer in any way, VNC etc.

Any ideas as to what to do would be very much appreciated

Two cards in slot 1 ...

what os are you on and what version of ati flashing tool did you use

Just in case you were referring to me : I'm on 10.6.2, using your Ati tool 1.2. As you can see in my system profile (see the attachment files five posts earlier), the Vapor-x card appears two times in slot 1, with and without driver installed. Probably I should erase some preferences, but I don't know which ones. Does anyone have an idea ?

Thanks and bye !

Spot, do you have your original rom?

if not, and there is no way of obtaining one, you should return the card if you can. Seems like your 3.1 version is a little changed, so it wont work with the roms made.

but first tell me what displays youre using

Brad, i wasnt  but that 2nd appearance is the sound chip on the card. Nothing to worry.

Big Thanks

:)I had a MP1.1 with a Nvidia 7300GT

Bought a sapphire 4890 NE Hynix from Amazon £150
Installed it using Sata cables for power
Spent 8 hours flashing etc Using OSX to Flash (Seemed to flash ok)
Kept getting black screens and OSX crashes on Boot

Built a Bootable CD using Universal BootCd and Magic ISO to put the ATIFlash and the Rom SAPPH_NE_HYNIX_EFIROMFX.rom in a folder
Booted the mac to dos using the cd flashed the rom.............. TA DA

All works Fab My MAc is good for another few years
COD Modern Warfare 2 runs flat out in Windows.
Thanks for this Forum, Would be nice to consolidate it a bit, It was like reading a novel but got there in the end.

Thanks for your work, :):D:)

XFX ver 3.1

I have 2 19 in samsung monitors. I was able to find a ver1.6 card like the others that were used earlier in the thread. I ma going to use the rom that they did and go from there. Thanks, will let you know how it goes.

andyace: did you flash with the same rom when using ATI Flashing tool?

if so, maybe a bug in the app, I need to repair.

OSX Flash

Yes i did it only wrote 96k in OSX when i did the dos flash it wrote the full 128k.

same flash each time.

Quartz extreme

Hi there,

strange things do happen ... Now I managed to get Quartz Extreme support for my 10.6.2 system, even if the System Profiler doesn't tell. I have a 10.5.8 system where the System Profiler states that even the sound chip driver works, but no Quartz Extreme there (see attachment). As I hardly use that system, no harm is done. But I depend on using an even older system, the 10.4.11, because of some software that is not compatible with newer system versions.

Cindori, you never promised that a 4890 card would work with a 10.4.11. My question is : could I do something about that (for instance modifying some file with a hex editor, in order to get my display at least rotatable), or would that be too complicated to create ? I understand, of course, that you did already very much work enabling the last four system versions for this card. If there's somebody who knows how much trouble it is to create these QE_CI packages it is you ... As I have no idea I thought I'd ask at least.

If there's no solution, I will work sometimes with less comfort, but the advantages of the new card are much more important. In any case I thank you very much again.

will the sapphire radeon 4890 vapor x 2GB ddr5 be compatible??

Hi to all!
1st thing:Sorry for my elementary or worst English
2nd:Cindori YOU are the best!!!

I have a :apple: Mac Pro 1,1 2,66 ghz
5 gb ram
with 7300 gt

Will this card with gpu clock at 2gb work properly on my mac in dual boot,
snow leopard and windows 7?
I use apple cinema display and a tv lcd 37" 8000 series

i read some pages of this tread so i'm sorry if there is an answer for my question...

thanx in advance:)
Bye

no, first the roms aren't compatible, and there is bug in osx with 2gb ram cards. I would get a 1gb card if I were you, but if you already have bought the card you can try with injectors.
