Peloche the EFI robot!

can't wait to get started on 5870's, at least then we won't have 100 different cards.

Thank you for everyone participating in this thread. It's just very cool to see video cards originally meant for Windows working in a mac. After reading through the posts I decided to get me a 4890 too. I picked up one XFX card (Part no: HD-489X-ZSQC) and just can't get it to work.

As soon as I got the card installed, I flashed it with ATI Flashing Tool using the XFX overclocked rom. I installed qe_ci 10.6.2 but now I'm getting a kernel panic at boot whenever system is loading ATIRadeonX2000.kext. I didn't make a backup of the original rom and I don't have access to Windows via bootcamp. I also flashed the card with EFI_XFX_ZSFR_4890.rom found earlier on this thread but all I get is kernel panic. So the question is, with all the excitement and not making a backup of the original rom, do I now have a nice new book weight? :D

My setup is Mac Pro 1.1 (2x2.66GHz). I have the original NVIDIA 7300 card installed in slot 2 and the 4890 in slot 1. Card is connected to the motherboard with two 6-pin power cables.

I would greatly appreciate any advice! :)

what ati flashing tool version?

what os version?

need to check if card works in windows or other OS to eliminate QE or card error....

And System Profiler gives me these:

Type: GPU
Bus: PCIe
Slot: Slot-1
PCIe Lane Width: x16
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x9460
Revision ID: 0x0000

I tried that patch and still no luck with QE support. Could there be a problem with the ROM I used? I used the one for Bokuholio. My original ROM is attached.

I also get the warning on boot about the power cables not being connected. I am powering it using one cable to the motherboard and one to the power supply through a molex connection. If I get another cable to go directly to the motherboard will this problem go away?

I am connecting the monitor to the DVI port on the Graphics card. I am also not able to get any picture off the HDMI port. Has anybody been able to get that to work?

Thanks again.

I tried the new ROM. Still no QE support. Are there any other options to get this enabled? Is there any chance that upgrading to Snow Leopard will make the patches work better? I tried the 10.5.8 patch that is with the ATI Flashing Tool 1.2 and the stand alone 10.6.2 patch that you put up earlier. It would be a little frustrating not having that feature.

Thanks again for all your help.

Sorry but QE_CI_Exotic patch 10.6.2.pkg is for 10.6.2 that means for Snow Leopard only

Could you try this one

I have my card flashed but like Vaderboy, QE support doesn't work. I'm on a Mac 1,1 running 10.6.2. I flashed the card through DOS using Bokuholio's ROM and everything seems to work fine. I then went and updated QE support using QE_CI_Exotic patch 10.6.2.pkg but still no QE support.

Any suggestions as to what I can do to fix this?

Having QE support is important to me since I'm an editor and I can't use Final Cut Pro unless this is detected. I'll try flashing my card with the new ROM that Peloche robot made for me and see if that helps. Thanks Peloche!

ROM has 0% to do with QE, just FYI

what you can do is try download 10.6.2 update from apple website, install, and then install QE before reboot

I'm using a Sapphire with hynix memory chip with the 02 efi rom with no problems , yet.By the way , where did you ordered the convertor display port to DVi?

I figured that was the case, but thought I would give it a try with a different ROM, because I wasn't sure what could affect things.

I upgraded to 10.6.2 and ran the latest QE_CI patch and viola, Quartz Extreme support.

I also want to mention that without the QE support I was seeing a lot of artifacts when I would move windows around (I think its called tearing). After I got it working this has all gone away.

Thanks again everyone for helping me get everything working and saving me a lot of money and actually getting a better card (vs. buying the Apple 4870).

When trying to flash through DOS (using http://web.me.com/jacobcroft/4870Flash/4870Flash.html method) on a standard PC, I get:

ROM not erased

ERROR 0FL01 : press '1' to continue.

atiflash -i shows the board as adapter 0

netkas.org's 'atiflash.exe -p -fs -fp 0 boku.rom' gave same error

Any ideas?

latest version of atiflash gives doesnt work, gives that error. download older version. it's all here in this thread if you would have searched for the error code

Hi all,
First I have to say a HUGE thank you to all who have contributed here. Such great help! After reading a goodly number of the posts, I, too, ran out and got me a 4890 card. This is going in a MP1,1, running 10.5.8. The card, like others have found, is the XFX Radeon HD 4890 from Best Buy (Model No.: HD-489X-Zs, Part No.: HD-489X-ZSFR, Ver. 1.6). And like others with this card, could not get the ROM installed via the ATI Flashing Tool, so again following many of the recommendations here made a DOS disk following these directions:

http://web.me.com/jacobcroft/4870Flash/4870Flash.html

and using this ROM:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/800949/

Everything seemed OK, could even get Quartz Extreme to load. But then, I reconnected my second monitor (main monitor is a 23" cinema display, secondary is an older 17" Apple Display with the ADC connector converted to DVI). As soon as I plugged in the second monitor, the mac pro rebooted! And then continued to reboot over and over again until I disconnected the second monitor. Just in case the monitor was the culprit, I also connected it to an NEC projector via DVI cable (no VGA), and same thing.

Has anybody else experienced this? Could it be a 10.5.8 vs. 10.6.2 issue?

Thanks in advance for any guidance on tracking this down.

Much thanks,
David

P.S. Also, like an idiot, I did NOT back up my original ROM. In the link referenced above wrt ROM used, is the file "ORIGINAL_XFX_ZSFR_4890.bin" in the download the original ROM for this card? Just a bit confused between .bin vs. .rom.

I have spent the entire day trying to create a dos-bootable cd or usb flash drive in order to run Aitflash but with no success. None of the bootdisks I've tried have been able to load the drivers for the superdrive. What am I doing wrong? Does anyone have a dos-bootable .iso file that works for flashing with Atiflash?

I'm trying to flash a Sapphire HD 4890 NE (Hynix) but keep failing with ATI Flashing Tool 1.2. I run OS X 10.6.2. I didn't backup my original ROM before I flashed the first time (unfortunately). If anyone has it I would love a copy. GPU-Z currently gives me this:

GPU-Z_4890.gif

Update: I finally succeeded to boot into DOS and flash my card through ATIFlash using the steps found on Virtualdave's link:

http://web.me.com/jacobcroft/4870Flash/4870Flash.html

I flashed the card using 02.rom from Peloche's table and now everything is running beautifully. Thank you so much to everyone for their work and for a great thread. Let me know if there is any way I can be of help.

Feel free to do some research.

ahh...I suppose you are referring to this at the top of the post under "what works and what doesn't": Dual Dvi (two displays) work in Snow Leopard ONLY.

For some reason I was thinking dual DVI referred to sending video to a larger display, like the apple cinema display. Suppose it's time to upgrade the OS.

Here I am reading nearly every post in this thread and the answer was at the top!

Thanks,
David

Try one from this site: http://www.allbootdisks.com/download/iso.html
To flash X1900 i used WinMe_bootdisk.iso burned on CD with Disk Utility. I was unable to make work USB stick in DOS in any port in my MP, so i formatted (DOS) a small capacity HDD and i have put ATIFlash and ROM on it. Used "start without CDROM support" option - works well.
