After plugging and replugging in my ACD, it works again. Was on my computer for about an hour and it suddenly shut down. I turned it back on but get no video on the card now. I did screen sharing and the MP still recognizes the 4890..

so it works but only sometimes, yes?

sounds to me like the acd is acting funky. assuming you have it connected to the right port (only 1 is Dual Link dvi, = 30") and Natit has proven to work atleast some, any other problems that occur should not be due to gpu.

Flashing attempt

Okay after some help from you guys, I got a ROM for my 4890 new edition Sapphire... decided against flashing on the PC side and got another nVidia card to boot in the Mac side to do all this. (GT 120). Running the GT120 in slot 1, and the 4890 in slot 2... I flashed the card with my ROM. Got no errors, then installed the QE, and half way through that installation I got a kernel panic. Rebooted, seemed to be ok. (says QE installed) Previously the ATI card had no info in the "about this Mac" panel... after flashing now reads 4890. So far so good. Rebooted with ATI card attached and got a quasi visible screen with a checkerboard noise pattern. Not good. Shut down, tried my other ROM. Still same thing. Switched the card's positions, and same effect (GT120 no probs, 4890 jaggies). Tried only the 4890 in PCe slot 1, and got nothing, blank screen. Went back, flashed the card again with it's original ROM, and now get a blue screen (no jaggies) but no boot window. Then the power cut out... wouldn't power up even with just the GT 120. Gave it an hour or two, now it's back up running the GT... ATI in slot 2... same thing blue screen.

Any suggestions? So far the GT120 is actually not bad, may simply return the ATI card with it's original ROM, but wanted to make sure I didn't fry it or maybe I'm doing something stupid to not get it showing up. (oh I dropped in the natit before I tried running it solo w original ROM btw) I'd like to get it running just to see though before returning it. Thanks.

After messing with it some more... After a computer restart I get the boot screen, but then it goes away until I unplug and replug the DVI cord. I normally leave my computer on all the time anyways but is that normal?

sounds to me like you are using bad rom

Okay searching the thread found HOM3R had the same issue as me with QE... is there a way to uninstall Quartz Extreme? Secondly looks like he had to use DOS to flash since somehow the ROM isn't being installed even though it's not giving an error.

Have to give that method a try and I'll report back.

impressive

You'll find herewith a table showing information about HD 4890 cards. If you like to complete this table or correct any mistakes please post your information (Manufacturer, Card Name, PN, SKU#).

Wow dude. You must love doing this b/c I know you're not making enough cashish to do it! :D Where would I find a SKU? Aren't those unique to resellers (e.g., NewEgg)?

Update

you have a total of 2 molex connectors, both are in your Superdrive bay

Ok everything is working perfectly now. The spare connector I had is what I used to power the Booster X5. I was unaware these connectors to the super drives were called "molex" connections, I thought they were SATA since that's what they looked like. Anyway, I took a SATA to 4-pin molex connector cable and plugged it from the spare connector in the super drive bay to the molex port on the power supply. It started up as soon as I powered on the MP. All the graphics cards are working perfectly in windows vista and OS X. Thanks so much!

The only thing that I would love is to figure out a way to get the side panel back on the box but there isn't any room to run the cords through any compartment so there all hanging the side.
Also I thought I read somewhere in this thread or the 4870 thread that someone had Crossfire working between there cards in Windows 7?
This would just awesome if I could figure that one out, but anyway thank you so much for the feedback that helped me through this.:)

Ok so I have read up to page 40 now and then skipped into the 60's to read the info regarding cards that are available as of right now.

I understand DVI -> VGA is a no go, But up to page 40 I saw nothing about DVI -> HDMI, Or maybe I did see a person having a problem with it but dont remember...Its alot of information to process in 2 nights of reading.

The reason im asking , I have a Hanns G 28" HD monitor but it only has VGA and HDMI....No DVI. I need to know if DVI -> HDMI is going to work before I purchase my card.

dvi=hdmi, only shape of plug is different

using my card with a 24" samsung + sony bravia TV via DVI---HDMI cable.

Thank you very much Cindori, I really appreciate it. Now onto the next leg of this journey...choosing a card that newegg still carries.

My Mac Pro randomly freezes now every few hours. I was watching Youtube videos and got a loud screech sound, then everything froze. Had to do a hard restart. Any ideas?

BTW does bootpicker interfere with natit or injectors? Does that need to be unistalled to get a card up and running?

UK 4890 stockists

Hi All,

Looking at buying a 4890 after getting into playing fallout 3 and such on Bootcamp :)

Where is the best place to buy a known working 4890 for the mac pro? 2008 model running snow leopard.

Was looking at an XFX 4890 here from overclockers http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-151-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1403

But I haven't found anyone on here running that specific model type?

Anyone in the UK bought a 4890 that's still available retail somewhere? Also would be good to know where to buy any required power cables etc.

Thanks everyone :)

You need to be more articulate if you want help.

"None are working" isn't telling us anything.

Is the flash not taking? Is there corruption? What?

Why not give us something to work with instead of expecting us to prod all the info out.

ZSFR ver. 3.1

I'm in the same boat, I created the UBCD with the rom posted by a few others not realizing that I had ver. 3.1 and not the 1.6. It flashed successfully and then I uninstalled natit. It actually lets me boot up in 10.6.2 with normal gray screen but I get little artifacts once in a while and VLC is buggy. After two seconds of Wow, it starts glitching and crashes if I don't exit out right away. I reinstalled the QE_CI package a few times and it finally seems to be minimizing the artifacts, but still seem to have open GL issues. I know it's likely due to being bad rom. I thought I had backed up the original rom using GPUz but now I can't find where it got saved to. I can't even boot up windows now because the screen is so distorted with this bad efi rom. It'll launch OK but then the screen slowly degrades until crashing to Blue screen with error message about video adapter not being able to reset. Is there any chance of getting a working rom for version 3.1 of the ZSFR card? I'll see what I can do to recover the original.

PS.. I also have a XFX|HD-489X-ZSFC shipping from Newegg next week since I've all but given up on finding a working rom for this one. But if someone can create it, I'd be more than willing to drop a pretty penny in their bucket :)

Edit - Found the original Rom.

I have a Sapphire VaporX 4890 (SKU# 11150-12-20R). I flashed the card using the vaporX 4890 rom with the ATI Flashing tool. The flash rom worked but resolution was stuck at 800x600. I am running SL. 10.6.0, Mac Pro 2,1. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
