To flash X1900 i used WinMe_bootdisk.iso burned on CD with Disk Utility. I was unable to make work USB stick in DOS in any port in my MP, so i formatted (DOS) a small capacity HDD and i have put ATIFlash and ROM on it. Used "start without CDROM support" option - works well.

Thanks for the tip. I was able to get it working another way (see update to my post). I appreciate the help!

Update:
Sapphire 4890 Vapor-X PN 100269VXLE
Works with DOS flash ATIFlash 3.60
Does not work with the ATIFlasher (OSX)
Everything worked fine after flash, and performance is a nice step up from the old GT120.
I do get the "power cord connection" errors.

I have a Saphire 4890 New Edition coming in as well that I'm going to test - one of these are going to a friend.

Thanks for the help.

No panic

I have the same error of power cable but if really, the card don't start.
I have the same that tested it on a pc and she works very well. if you withdraw a electrical feeding the card doesn't start. I'm not worry, it works very well on mac and on pc (and bootcamp also):)
Also the atiflasher 1.2 won't flash my graphic card and i flash it with the dos atiflash 3.60.
No comparaison with the gt120 very chip expensive nvidia.

now I wait bootcamp update to try windows 7 with aero peek and also any pc game.

Hi

A quick thankyou to everyone, I have lurked for a week or so reading this thread and thanks to all your good efforts I have flashed my 4890.

Sapphire 4890 Vapor-X PN 100269VXLE
description on box Vapor-X HD4890 1G GDDR5 PCI-E HDMI/DP/DVI-I/VGA
SKU 11150-12-20R

Sourced from Pixmania (UK) - link to 4890

I sourced 2 Apple graphic power cables from Isolder

My ROM matched Bradipo, JaQ777 and Vaderboy's so I used the modified one provide here for them.

ATIFlash (OSX) didn't seem to work (missed that bit) so used a PC and DOS booted with USB stick, using ATIFlash v3.6 again through the link in these pages.

Despite having 6pin to 6 pin cable I got the warning message about disconnected power cable. ??

But seems to work.

Thanks once again.

Hey Guys,
It sucks I have to do this on my first post, but someone just offered to buy me a 4890 today for my Mac Pro 1,1....So, sorry for the blatant noobness.

I was on page 13 of this thread when they offered to buy it for me and I still have not gotten far enough to know what cards are available as of December '09 that are a guaranteed work with the Mac Pro 1,1 and Cindori's ATI flashing tool/ROM's.

I wanted to order from Newegg, But it seems they are sold out of the regular Sapphire 4890. I just need to be pointed to the card that I should purchase because when someone offers to buy it for me I dont have time to research.

Thanks, please dont flame me and happy holidays!

So nothing has changed sense the initial post eh?

The more I read into the thread the more the vapor x didnt look so good. But being that im not concerned with dual DVI support (which seems to be everyone's problem) I still saw everyone using mainly the same card....Which is not available anymore.

You said this:
Unsure of what card to buy?
Here are the cards that have Mac Modified roms at the moment.
(Your card can look the same but still be incompatible, so first you should backup ROM with GPU-Z in Windows, if it doesnt work maybe someone will write a new rom for you)

So what may have the same model# and look the same, May very well be an incompatible card is what your saying.

Im just wondering, From your experience...What card would you buy right now that seems to work the best with your software in Leopard?

Hey guys, I just got myself a 4890 and I have run into some problems during installation/flashing.

The card is a 1GB XFX Extreme Edition 4890 card, model HD-489A-ZDEC.

I initially had an ATI X1900XT installed in my Mac Pro (model 1,1 btw), so, after backing up my original ROM, I put the X1900XT back into my machine and installed Natit using Cindori's ATI Flashing Tool (selecting the XFX card version for Natit instalation).

Next, I took the X1900XT out and put the 4890 back in to flash it. Unfortunately though, I was getting a black screen on startup. So, I went about flashing the card via Screen Sharing on my notebook. Using Cindori's ATI Flashing Tool and the ROMs provided, I flashed the card using the XFX "Overclocked" ROM (because I have the overclocked card). I then also removed Natit and installed QE.

So, with this done, I restarted my Mac Pro, which came up with the grey boot screen. Unfortunately though, the screen then turned all grey and froze. I tried restarting again and this time, it got past the grey load screen and froze on a blue screen. I have tried restarting several times since then and while I sometimes arrive at my logon screen, there are always screen artifacts/staircase glitches. Furthermore, I sometimes get the famous "Check your video card's power cables!" warning message, although I don't think they are the issue here.

So, I have attached my card's original ROM. Any help here would be greatly appreciated as I don't really know where to go from here.

Thanks to everyone here in advance!

the cards that are seeing many differences in revisions are vaporx, newedition and xfx cards. which may lead to trouble. the rest basically only have 1 version, so success shoould be guaranteed, but also they are not manufactured anymore.

Awesome! Thanks a lot! I'll give it a go in a couple of days after Christmas.

One question though, can I still use this with Cindori's ATI Flashing Tool after the last flash buggered it up? i.e., because I can't currently get a working picture with the 4890 plugged in.

How to OC

first off, Cindori, thank you so much for this great guide! i got the XFX Hd-489X-ZSFR from best buy and it worked perfectly.

now you may have already answered this, but how do you go about overclocking the card? i found ATIccelerator II but how do you monitor the card temperature?

thanks for all your help you've been to me and everyone else on this thread.:D

Getting my Displays to Work

Ok so this Christmas I got two displays. Both are 24" Samsungs that have DVI. I have the OEM 4870 in my 2009 Mac Pro. I also have a Sapphire 4890, that I have one of the displays plugged into. I know I remember doing some kind of installation of drivers or something like that, that I read about in this thread. 10.6 sees the 4890 in System Profiler, and I will attach that image here. I have an ACD LED and one Samsung plugged into the 4870 that work fine, but the one plugged into the 4890 is not working and I'm not sure where to go from here. My Sapphire is an older one and is not the new one they just recently came out with. All three displays work fine in Windows Vista, and there are some minor kinks I'm working but it is 10.6 that is the real problem. What should I do? Thanks for the help.

Sorry Forgot To Mention....

I also forgot to say that I also have a FSP Booster X5 which I put in one of the superdrive bays. I haven't the slightest clue how to get it to turn on so it can power my graphics cards. Anyone familiar with this type of PSU? Any references or help with this as well would also be greatly appreciated.

you modify rom in RBE in windows

ATIccelerator is 4 years old and will not work on intel macs.

there are no gpu temp drivers in osx.

Ferrari: have you flashed the card? have you patched qe ci? is the card powered?

Great news, followed the steps at the beginning of the forum and I have flashed my card with great success.

The only issue that remains is my stubborn FSP Booster X5 which won't seem to power on, unless there is a Molex connection from the power supply to it. I can't seem to figure this part out.

Curious

Has anyone looked into the new Firmware thats available for the 4850 iMac's?

I was just curious to see if it would actually help any of us who still have the flickering during the boot process on some of the 4890's.

If I remember correctly the original firmware rom from the 4850 iMac is being used to help patch the roms for the 4890.

no, its from the apple 4870.

i've been looking into the update anyway because it sports new flashing drivers, however no one have signed up for testing so I can not build it to my tool..yet

Installed my Sapphire New Edition 4890 w/ qimonda memory, plugged in my 30" ACD, turn on my MP and the fan on the 4890 spin and the MP is on.. but my ACD wont turn on. Any suggestions?

edit: My ACD is just acting up like it has once before after being unplugged. I plugged my MP into my TV (DVI cable with a DVI to HDMI converter on TV end) and I got video output on my 2600, but not my 4890. I had previously installed Natit but I reinstalled it again then shut off my MP and removed the 2600 and plugged my TV into the DVI port on my 4890 and I got no video.

edit 2: Used Screen Sharing on my MBP and got the 4890 to work. My ACD still doesn't work, probably due to me unplugging my MBP and the ACD power adapters are junk. Should work tomorrow hopefully.

Sorry guys, I'm still a bit confused here.

I've been trying to get my new 4890 to work in my 1,1 Mac Pro, as described in my post above.

As I said, my first flashing attempt was a massive no-go. Peloche was nice enough to make me a new ROM to try flashing my card with - thank you so much for that!

But I'm a bit stuck now because since my first flashing attempt didn't work, I can't actually boot back into OS X with my 4890 to try to re-flash it with my new ROM (due to graphical errors and power connector warning messages whenever I try booting up with the 4890. I also can't get screen sharing to work anymore either)

So, where to from here? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

custom natits are working bad

rokasburo, if you can use screen sharing, do that.
otherwise its boot-cd way for you
