card appears to have been flashed at least.

two scenarios:

1. rom is bad
2. qeci patch buggered up, happens for some

reinstall 10.6.2 and DONT install qeci. if it works it'll give you 1280x1024 display with no 3D.

if it doesnt work ill make new rom

I actually have a brand new copy of SL sitting on my shelf but cant install it due to my work. I dont know if you missed I was in 10.5.8. but I have to stay in Leopard for awhile.

Im going to venture into Windows again and see if I can successfully flash the original ROM back on it, Well that is if I can get into Windows with out a crash.

I know. Dual DVI is not somthing I need. The KP happens just from the card being present in a PCIE slot and powered up, No monitors connected..If the card is unpowered I can boot in OS on the 7300 and see the 4890 in the profiler. Can I reflash the 4890 in OS without the power cables attached to it?

Cindori,
Ok first....Im a total idiot. I had swapped in the drive that had my Windows partition on it.....But mac OS partition on that drive was still at 10.5.6 not 10.5.8. I was having a smoke thinking about it and it just hit me.

So I swapped my 10.5.8 drive back in, Powered up the 4890 and booted into OS fine...Installed EC pkg and rebooted. Works just fine!

So I have noticed already that im getting some artifacts while just browsing the web....Do you think I should install your new ROM anyways? Or just leave it as is?

Thanks so much bro....I'll definitly be sending a donation your way.

where can I find the rom (for a XFX 489X ZSFC v1.6 4890 card)

Just purchased this card and saw some reference to this card earlier...

thanks for the help

Cindori,
It seems that the ROM you made for my powercolor solved all of the distortion and artifact problems I was having. I could not play a game in windows....The distortions were that bad in even the least demanding games like the original Halo.

I originally thought it may be a heat problem, But I had not seen anyone mention heat issues in the Mac Pro using the 4890....So I tried your new ROM and I really believe it solved my problem.

So.....Heres a question for ya. Do you think the 4890 is a significant heat risk for other hardware (like 5 hard drives) inside a Mac Pro?

Im asking because I know you have unfortunately been down the road of strapping an aftermarket cooler to your 4890. Did you do that because of heat issues in the Mac Pro or because your a performance geek?

now I'm still in highschool but even I know that energy can't disappear ;)
no matter what GPU cooler you use, you are going to have the same case temperature. fans only pushes the same air around, it doesnt magically lower the temperature.

I would not see the card as a heat risk in any way. Mac Pro is the coolest computer I've ever encountered. If you still don't feel assured, consider the fact that Apple themselves retail GPU's of came caliber (4870, 285GTX).

I bought the cooler cause it was ~300 SEK = ~ $40, and it provides some additional room for overclocking while still producing a lot less noise then the stock cooler.

im glad the rom worked :)

I'm pleased to report swapping the slots with my GT120 has given me good results so far this morning. While the GT120 is struggling with dual monitors at 1920x1080 rotated, the main 30" 2560x1600 is going strong. I have yet to install QECI but I'm not sure if it is required. Where is glxgears when I need it? ;)

Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro4,1
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz

XFX Radeon ZSFC version 1.6 (from the box HD 4890 850M 1GB DDR5 DUAL DVI TV PCI-E). Purchased from NewEgg about 3 weeks ago.

Took so long as I thought I had the skill to make my own cables. After that realization I just ordered some off ebay from a vendor called 'crazyconn'. The item was titled 'PCIe PCI-e Power Cable for Mac G5 nVidia ATI Video Card' and it got here faster than I thought it would. Shipped from Los Angeles.

Flashed using a ROM that Cindori posted on another thread/post somewhere (this site doesn't support searching for files attached to threads!).

Nevertheless, the zip attached was called XFXnew.zip but inside was EFIROMFX.rom which I have reposted here in zipped format.

I still need to install QECI according to the documentation in the tool. Not sure what standard way of testing frame rates is best for the Mac.

Big thanks to Cindori and the Macrumors forum community.

That is the exact setup I have. My machine (late Mac Pro 2.26) boots just fine but the display is not being recognized.

I initially DOS flashed it with my PC but reflashed on my Mac after the first attempts but still have the same outcome. The System Profile shows the correct card info including EFI version but there is no display indicated. Hmmm.

OK guys, so I'm pretty sure I just f***ed up.

I tried flashing my 4890 via boot CD, but I'm pretty sure I just flashed my X1900XT instead.

Now, when I turn my machine on with the X1900 plugged in, the fan goes crazy and nothing comes up on my display.

I can still access my machine via screen sharing, so that's a bit of a relief, but i'm kind of PANICKING right about now!!!

Does anybody here have ANY idea what I should do now? Can I maybe re-flash my X1900XT with the original Apple ROM?

ANY help here would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

can boot into dos with 4890 running display no?

No, I can't do much at all with my 4890 atm. Mac OS, Windows and DOS all give me a power connector error message.

I managed to boot into Mac OS with both my x1900xt and 4890 via screen sharing (because of the now dodgy x1900 ROM) and flash both cards with the new 4890 ROM from Peloche (I figured the x1900 ROM was already buggered), but doesn't seem to have worked; still getting the same error messages.

so have you flashed the 4890 yet? i mean else it sounds like there actually is power issue.

Yes, I originally flashed it with the Overclocked XFX ROM provided with your ATI Flashing Tool, but have since re-flashed it with the new ROM provided by Peloche.

After both times, I have been getting the power connector warnings.

Although, before flashing it, the card worked fine in Windows via BootCamp, so I's sounding like a ROM issue, rather than a power issue.

I have spent two days reading through these forums. Amazing bundles of info, but I'm sort of confused.

I went out and bought the XFX Radeon 4890 from Best Buy. Now will I also need 2 of these cables:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270464636969&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I'm on Mac Pro 1,1, 2x3GHz, 4 GB, with 2 Radeon X1900xt's that cause the system to freeze every 2 seconds after having installed Snow Leopard. So I need to finish this upgrade quick.

Now with that card and those cables (after you guys confirm it, I'll order em), can I just follow through with Cindori's simple method on the front page using the ATI Flashing Tool, or will I be forced to go through Windows XP.

Thanks and God Bless in advance.

Dude, there is glxgears!

install/open X11.app in /Apps/Utilities

right click on X11 icon in dock -> programs ->terminal(or xterm)

and type glxgears there

Hey guys, so Apple have decided to replace my X1900XT seeing as I f***ed it up when trying to flash my 4890 (didn't tell them that of course :p)

So that's all good, but I'm still stuck with this 4890 that I can't seem to get to work. I've literally tried everything!

So, I was wondering if there was anybody here in Australia (Melbourne area) who would be willing to take a look at my card and have a go a flashing it?

Just to recap, it's an XFX HD-489A-ZDEC (this is he overclocked version).
