Just to clarify....

I have a 4890 which is the first picture on the compatible card page. I flashed it with the rom and it works great. Just to be sure I'm wondering if I need to keep current with the qe_ci updates. I think I read somewhere on this huge thread that with the 4890 , you don't need the qe_ci updates. Also If I remember correctly these updates would come into play in the incremental updates of the os ie 10.6. to 10.6.3 etc.....

Thanks for making my old mac pro 1.1 a graphics powerhouse once again.

Here is the exact model:

XFX HD-489X-ZSFC Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card - Retail
Item #: N82E16814150438

Is this version 1.6? And would I chose normal clocked or overclocked?
And I also read that Cindori's tool has a bug that may cause problems with our x1900xts?

Sorry for all the questions, and thanks again.

I've been checking this thread out for awhile

I have been reading it but nearly every time I decide I want to be a card that I know works according to this thread, it is discontinued.

Is there any confirmed working card that is sold by newegg or amazon that I can buy?

Newegg only has two listed:

XFX HD-489X-ZSFC

and

GIGABYTE GV-R489UD-1GD

Thank you

I purchased the XFX HD-489X-ZSFC from newegg about 2 weeks ago. I received revision 1.6 and it worked. But YMMV because there's no way to guarantee you will get the same revision.

Thanks, I'll try amazon first - I have that 2 day shipping thing, so I can get it quicker - hopefully it's a 1.6

How do you check if it is or not once I get it?

Edit:

Does anyone know the cheapest place to get the cables? and for the 4890 - I need two right?

download this

http://groths.se/atiflashingtool/XFX1-6.zip

install kexts with Kexthelper (google it)

now try boot with ONLY 4890 inside.

if successful, go ahead and flash with modified rom in zip.

EDIT

just bought a ZSFC for testing and got a 2.0 revision. it doesnt work with ati flashing tool

1) So I should load up Mac,
2) install the two .kext files with Kext Helper,
3) then shut off comp,
4) remove the x1900xt's,
5) put in the 4890, boot up Mac
6) then use your macmodified_new_XFX.rom with ATI Flashing Tool...

or will it simply not work as your edit suggests (if it unluckily turns out to be the 2.0 revision instead of the 1.6)?

thanks again, you guys are wonderful.

being in the UK it seems trying to find some of the cards mentioned is a little difficult...

are any of these ok?

if it's 1.6, that is gonna work.
if its 2.0, its not gonna work. you'll have to do bootcd method for that.
im making a 2.0 rom later today.

revision 1.6 / 2.0 will say on sticker on package prob.

wonderful. I'm waiting to receive the 4890 from newegg, so I don't know yet if its 1.6 or 2.0. hopefully you'll have the working rom up by then if its 2.0. thanks again bud. :)

This thread and the help here is great, but . . .

Is the XFX HD-489X-ZSFC v1.6 really working ok for anyone, specifically in a version 2.1 MacPro with Snow Leopard 10.6.2? I have tried the last three ROMs mentioned in this thread, each one seemed to be getting better, but still not stable. I'm currently using the "macmodified_new_XFX.rom" I never tried the overclocked ROM.

In OSX I get broken up black horizontal lines that sometimes clear up, sometimes get worse, and over 10-15 minutes the machine might gradually deteriorate (loses mouse clicks), then just freeze. Windows 7 in Bootcamp is unstable, gets confused about what display driver it wants to use, and crashes a lot. VMWare running the bootcamp Windows might start ok, run for a while with very poor screen refresh as dialog boxes start empty and fill in, then usually crashes to blue screen.

I had none of these problems with the original ATI-1900, which works but lost one DVI output. At this point I'm tempted to put the 1900 back in and give up, or wait for reports of a more stable ROM for the XFX. I would consider swapping this XFX card for something different, still in a 30 day exchange period with newegg, but the available choices of 4890's or 4870's is dwindling. I'm open to suggestions. Is there a need to install any kexts, or should I try a different slot?

I saw that thread as well but learned that installing QE/CI is required for things to perform properly.

dude, have you installed qeci?..

also the xfx in roms.zip works fine

Yes, installed and tested qeci from the ATI Flashing tool, is there another way to do it? The XFX normalclocked rom in the roms.zip was the first I tried, maybe I'll go back to that. At first, your last one posted (macmodified-new) seemed to be fine in OSX, then the black lines show up after a reboot.

that cable wont work. the cable is called "Mac G5 power cable something". It's only used in Macs, not PC.

i will make rom soon. meanwhile, go make bootcd.

Ok I believe I'm completely screwed. I just received the XFX ZSFC from newegg and it says "Ver 3.1".

Now what am I supposed to do???
