In a van down by the river
Hi, preview Mac default app can markup, sign pdf and search. I Edit pdf almost every day with preview. I’m sure pdf expert does it in a better way and with more options but the basic features you mentioned are all included in preview.
If PDF Expert does go fully to subscription and they won't allow current use of version 2 etc., I guess I will go back to the stock app or look elsewhere. I don't need full featured PDF support every day and there is no way I am paying $50 a year to PDF Expert.

+1 for Homebrew too I need it for Jupiter notebooks and all libraries

It not even hard to set up. There may not be ARM bottles for your favorite installs, so if you get an error just add the build from source parameter and it will compile for ARM.

Everything that I needed to install so far has built fine for ARM, with the exception of ffmpeg, so I’m just waiting for updated dependencies (which is the issue) and then that should compile fine as well.

EDIT: Also, you can see what’s supported here... https://doesitarm.com/kind/homebrew/

Has anyone else had issues with app launching time on universal apps? I've been noticing that several apps - Omnifocus and all Microsoft Office universal apps (downloaded via the App Store), can bounce 15 or so times before launching. I've checked Ativity Monitor and these are all showing as "Apple" rather than "Intel". While not always the case, if I restart my Mac and launch these apps then close them and reopen they don't take as long as to open. This doesn't always happen though.

Anyone else experiencing this or are all your universal, non-Apple apps opening much faster on M1?

Same behavior. But once native app is opened it's super smooth and snappy than x86 apps.

For me, app start-up time is very variable, depending on which external disks are spinning at the time I launch the app.

Seems the app waits for the disk to spin, even if it's not being used immediately. Even the Apple apps do this.

It will do this the first time launching the app. Only the first time.

Yeah, I’m seeing this happen, too. It’s supposed to just do the translating on the first launch, but it seems like a bug is causing this to have to happen repeatedly.

Dumb question, but you're putting the app in /Applications right, and not by accident launching from a .dmg directly?

Yes. Same here. The Microsoft Office apps are downloaded straight from the App Store into the Applications folder. They do appear to be translating after each time I open it. Anyone found a solution?

Try and submit Feedback if you can. I'm seeing this from App Store apps, too, and I feel the only real "fix" for this is going to come in the form of a Software Update at some point.

It seems that macOS checks the app before allow us run it first time. If you have issues with your Internet connection, it may delay first run of an app. I had a temporary issue with Wi-fi and all this time I observed a bouncing icon of an app in Dock.

Well I know my internet connection isn’t the issue. I’m getting about 850Mbps DL & 40+Mbps UL.

What about Go based packages? Do they work just fine with this version of Homebrew?

Hey, do any of you think Discord will release an M1 app (Universal app) sooner rather than later?

On the other hand, does anyone know if it is that difficult to recompile an app for Apple Silicon? Does Xcode make all the job? or you have to change the code? Thank you.

Really depends on the app. I've had good success with the few apps I've tried, but none of them were that complex. For example, the web app desktop creator Multi compiled with zero issues.

Discord is an Electron app, you'll have to wait for them to update the app to latest Electron build first (Electron 11 offers M1 support) and then build for M1 separately (Electron doesn't currently offer universal package support for both intel/m1 builds, it is too large).

Don't check for the update in-app, it most likely won't automatically update you to m1 build like other Electron apps because of the universal package issue.

For majority of native macOS apps, recompiling should be relatively simple and quick. Any special hardware-specific (think assembly or C/C++ code) or JIT code will need more TLC from developers to add support for M1 specifically.

I was able to install ffmpeg last night through homebrew. Works great with YouTube-dl. Everything else that I use works great under Rosetta, with the exception of Plex. I'm waiting on a native version there.
