Apple is becoming rotten under Tim Cook. Look at recent MacBook pros and iPad pros. So many issues.

IOS 12 didn’t change anything in my case. I find the problem to occur more when connected to the smart keyboard. Maybe it’s a side-effect of a frequent loss of connection to the smartkeyboard ?

ios 12 didnt change anything, but it isnt (only) a side effect of the smartkeyboard, because i dont have any. i also disconnected the pencil before updating and that didnt change anything either.

my ipad works fine when the battery level is 90-100%, now i started to see letters dropping alot when writing, and the battery level was 65%. anything under 80% of the battery level and letters are dropping, when around 40-60% the ioad is useless and becomes worse when connected to the charger. i need to left my ipad alone to full charged it until able to use it again.

because so many people have excatly the same problem even with replaced units, there might be serious design-problem in hardware... hope not.

Just installed iOS 12. No change.

I’ve given up trying to figure it out. In my case, there is no pattern, rhyme or reason. Battery level, plugged in or not, pencil connected or not, Smart Keyboard or not etc. makes no difference.

The only thing I can say for sure is that when it stops responding, moving or tilting the iPad will cause it to start responding again. Until it happens again that is.

Extremely frustrating and I think Apple should be addressing this. Replacing the iPad clearly doesn’t work. There is some sort of design flaw here.

I’ve got the same problem with my iPad Pro 2. Unresponsive for some time and then it works. Annoying, I think I’ll try to exchange it...

Really hard to overemphasize how annoying it is, having a device that relies on touch input 100%, when that input is highly intermittent and failure-prone. Apple had better figure this out...

I've had this issue as well... just thought it was an ios bug...

The fact it can resolved by turning the iPad off (not a shutdown/reboot) and back on seems to imply it’s a software or touchscreen driver issue.

I'm pretty sure this has to do with the battery expanding. When my iPad gets hot, theres a part of the screen that bulges out a little bit, enough to notice when you press it. It has frequent moments where it does not respond to any touch events. Its really annoying and it makes any type of game unplayable. I used to be top 50 in pubg but I had to retire until I can get my iPad to work reliably, I'm starting to think that won't be until the new iPads come out.

Anyone tried leaving the iPad with heavy weight resting on it (like something flat but with a dumbbell or something) on top? Thinking of trying that. If it is the battery swelling maybe this would push it back so it no longer impinges on the screen.

I've had batteries swell before and I'd never consider keeping one once I discovered it is in that condition. Swelling is an indication of internal changes within the battery that will lead to eventual failure or possibly worse - a fire.

Not sure if swelling is the root cause of the issue people are discussing here but for those who are observing battery deformation I'd recommend having the tablet checked for potential replacement of the battery.

How about for people outside of warranty? Does the $xx battery replacement program apply to iPad Pro 12.9” units?

Or maybe swapping out the iPad?

Please don't do this. An expanding battery is caused by a chemical reaction resulting in a build up of hydrogen gas, which is volatile. If your battery is expanding, power your device down and contact Apple for proper servicing.

I’m taking my 12.9 2017 iPad in for battery replacement today for this issue. To at least eliminate the swelling battery as a possible cause. Is it possible to lock the iPad up with settings so I can leave it as-is and not need to wipe it to be sure no Apple employee can poke around in my apps or data?

As long as you have a sufficiently strong passcode it shouldn't be a problem. If you power it all the way off it disables Touch ID as well until the passcode is entered.

Definitely have a backup though, just in case they have to erase it or replace it.

Hmm, it’s kinda weird because my iPad somehow ‘settled’ and the screen is so much better. Hadn’t any major issue with the touch screen from Monday... Maybe iPad did some heavy lifting in the background for couple days after fresh iOS 12 installation? Weird but now it works like it should. Fingers crossed.

So I decided to wipe the iPad before taking it to the store and it’s a good thing I did. Turns out I was under warranty still, and they swapped it for a new one. So upside is I got a new unit; downside is we won’t know whether it was the battery, a failed screen, or what.

Unfortunately, you don't know if your new one is faulty. This is the problem...

I went in today for this issue and they refused to do anything besides wipe the device and start it as new (no backup restore) even though we were able to duplicate the issue.

Nevertheless I left pretty damn frustrated.

Well, was getting p,d off with mine as it seemed to be happening more frequently so I gave the screen a slap with the palm of my hand and it’s been fine since. That was over a week ago. Fingers crossed it stays fixed.

Ditto, which was why I sold mine. Hope someone else will swap yours out.

Glad some folks are getting replacements, but I still think full refunds are the way to go, even more so for folks whose replacements are showing the same issues.
